Rosie Hewlett and Emily Hauser are coming to Waterstones York on 6th May, at 7pm. Read all about these amazing authors latest works while booking your ticket... Rosie Hewlett, Medea: From an unmissable new voice comes the powerful and epic story of mythology's darkest heroine. Shunned. Persecuted. Tormented. Medea longs for a different life. Since childhood, she has been separated from her sister, shunned by her mother, and persecuted and tormented by her brother and father. All because of a unique and dangerous talent: witchcraft. Fierce. Powerful. Sorceress. But when a dashing young hero, Jason, arrives to claim the famed Golden Fleece that her father fiercely protects, Medea sees her opportunity for escape. Her offer to help Jason overcome the trials set by her father sets in motion a journey that will test every ounce of her strength, magic and loyalty; a journey that will see her battle monsters, dethrone kings and fall in love. When faced with the ultimate betrayal, Medea is driven to an act of desperation so brutal it rips apart the lives of everyone involved. Dr Emily Hauser, Mythica: Did you love Madeline Miller’s Circe? Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls? Jennifer Saint's Elektra? Natalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships? But did you ever wonder who the real women behind the myths of the Trojan War were? Now award-winning classicist and historian Emily Hauser takes readers on an epic journey to uncover the astonishing true story of the real women behind ancient Greece’s greatest legends – and the real heroes of those ancient epics, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. A Brief History of the Countryside in 100 Objects, Sally Coulthard: A Waterstones Best Book of 2024: Nature Writing The untold story of rural Britain revealed through its artefacts 'A really lovely, fascinating book. I dived straight into this clever, joyous, celebration of nature, history, and – of course – the countryside.' Charles Spencer, author of The White Ship For most of human history, we were rural folk. Our daily lives were bound up with working the land, living within the rhythm of the seasons. We poured our energies into growing food, tending to animals and watching the weather. Family, friends and neighbours were often one and the same. Life revolved around the village and its key spaces and places – the church, the green, the school and the marketplace. And yet rural life is oddly invisible our historical records. The daily routine of the peasant, the farmer or the craftsperson could never compete with the glamour of city life, war and royal drama. Lives went unrecorded, stories untold. There is, though, one way in which we can learn about our rural past. The things we have left behind provide a connection that no document can match; physical artefacts are touchstones that breathe life into its history. From farming tools to children’s toys, domestic objects and strange curios, the everyday items of the past reveal fascinating insights into an often-forgotten way of life. Birth, death, celebration, work, crime, play, medicine, beliefs, diet and our relationship with nature can all be read from these remnants of our past. Accessibility: We have two instore bathrooms (ground and first floor) and a customer lift. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Fragments | King's Manor - University of York

Fine Art
Join us for the launch of a thought-provoking exhibition by an eclectic group of artists exploring the theme of 'fragments' in varied media. Hear from painters and ceramicists who use fragments of the landscape itself in their work via the incorporation of soil, wild clay and natural materials, as well as artists exploring small parts of natural or urban landscapes, the human form or the normally unseen world of microscopic images. Fragments invites viewers to reflect on the interplay between the physical and the emotional, the individual and the collective, and the enduring human drive to find order and meaning in life’s fragments. On display are works by seven artists from the Art 9 collective, all inspired by the forces of nature, such as the relentless reshaping of remote shores through coastal erosion, and the way these processes mirror the fluid connections that bind us to the earth. At the same time, the exhibition delves into interior landscapes - fragments of thought and emotion that emerge from within. Detached from any visual connection to the outer world, these works seek to bring harmony to the chaos of the mind, transforming disarray into unity. Following the launch talk, there will be an opportunity to browse the exhibition and chat to the artists. All the work in the exhibition is available to buy, unless annotated. The exhibition and talk are presented by the Heritage for Global Challenges Research Centre which is funded by a Leverhulme International Professorship and located in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. The Fragments exhibition will run throughout the Festival, except Sundays.
