Follow Mikelangelo, the Nightingale of the Adriatic, as he sails the wild seas with his trusty guitar, his booming baritone, and his sparkling accordion. On his adventures he encounters a beautiful mermaid in her underwater cave, a lonely ice queen in her frozen castle, and a huge Sperm whale from the darkest depths of the ocean.
Mikelangelo weaves songs and storytelling into a magical, mysterious voyage into the unknown. Full of laughter, imagination and unexpected twists and turns, this new solo show will captivate and delight audiences young and old, and everyone in between.
In the Belly of the Whale was created in collaboration with writer/director Tracy Bourne, who has worked on extensively in music theatre in Australia, including productions with Chamber Made Opera, Melbourne International Festival and the ABC.
Mikelangelo is the alter-ego of songwriter and creative dynamo Michael Simic. For 25 years, he has travelled Australia and the globe, as a solo performer, and fronting his long term group Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen. He has packed venues and received critical accolades from the Sydney Opera House to London's West End, releasing 17 independent albums and building a worldwide following.
In The Belly of the Whale has its' international premiere at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival. Following the success of the Mikelangelo and Van Diemen's Band performances of Songs of the Sea at AWBF in 2023, we recommend you book early, as these shows are likely to sell out. This event is brought to you as part of the 2025 Australian Wooden Boat Festival held 7-10 February, 2025. Doors: Doors open approximately 15 minutes before the show. Duration: Approximately 90 minutes. Interval: No interval. Latecomer Policy:This performance has a strict latecomers policy. To minimise disturbance to others, latecomers will be granted access to the venue approximately 15 minutes from the start of the performance only. Age recommendation: This performance is recommended for people aged 12 years and over. Accessibility:The primary access for guests is via the main entrance on Salamanca Place. The Front Doors to the theatre are located in the Peacock Theatre Foyer. NOTE: There are numerous stairs located in the Peacock Theatre Foyer and then also inside the PeacockTheatre itself. Abi hit the stand-up comedy scene in 2010 and hasn't stopped since. He has headlined at Zanies and Laugh Factory and performs all over the city, but his career hits more than Chicago. He's the winner of HBO Latino Stand-up Comedy Contest (2020). He was also selected to perform at Kevin Hart's LOL Network as part of the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. Abi is not only on HBO MAX Latino but you can catch him on Hulu's Tumbleweeds with Killer Mike representing Chicago Comedy and on Peacock. PRODUCED AND HOSTED BY SUSANA RODRIGUEZ @TALKATIVECHICCOMEDY- Susana Rodriguez is a Mexican/American comic who bases most of her comedy on her not looking Mexican and her strict church upbringing. Tyler Fowler- Tyler Fowler is a nationally touring comedian who expertly weaves relatable anecdotes about marriages, kids and jobs - none of which he has - to create a show you won't want to miss. His debut album Friends With 401(k) Benefits premiered #1 on iTunes and Top 10 on the Billboard Comedy Charts and was followed by a 30 minute special with Drybar Comedy titled Little Spoon. Kadeem Fuller- bio to come Jhovany Diaz- Jhovany Diaz born in Los Angeles, California to Mexican parents, and grew up in the Chicagoland area. You can catch him talking about his deported father, his questionable choices in women and how it was like to leave his hometown and finally meet white people on stages throughout the Midwest. Various appearances include Miami, Orlando, San Antonio and South Texas.
The last few years he's been on the rise in both the Chicago and Milwaukee comedy scene. Jhovany's performed at The Comedy Cafe in Milwaukee, The Laugh Factory in Chicago, Zanies Old Town, Zanies Rosemont and the Orlando Improv. He is a monthly host of “Mezcal Monday’s” at Zanies Old Town in Chicago. Jhovany has also hosted and helped produce a variety of shows around the Chicago suburbs and produces his own podcast “The Lobo Den” that includes crazy stories from some of the best comics in Chicago. Recently has been a new favorite on Roast Battle Chicago. Denise Medina- Denise Medina is an MC and comedian. She graduated cum laude with a BA in speech and performing arts from NEIU. She wants to be relevant and hip but is mostly quirky. A self-described goofball, her humor is good-natured, observational and relatable. She has emceed corporate events, performed for veterans and in comedy clubs such as the Improv, Zanies, Laugh Factory, Second City’s UP Comedy Club, has been a guest on WGN radio and Chicago Parent’s Masters of Parenting podcast. Matt Michalski- Matt is a stand up comedian in Chicago as well as a full time firefighter/paramedic. He’s performed at places such as Zanies, The Second City, The Lincoln Lodge, and many more around the Midwest.
