the undercommons: New Work by Brandon Carlton | Arts + Public Life
Apr 18, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Chicago
Arts + Public Life presents
the undercommons
,
the first solo exhibition by painter Brandon Carlton, opening April 18, 2025. Through his distinctive approach to stylized figuration, Carlton explores the complexities of contemporary Black life, using portraiture and spatial composition to evoke intimacy, distance, and presence.
Taking inspiration from
The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning & Black Study
by Fred Moten and Stefano Harney,
the exhibition engages with their concept of the undercommons—a space of "fugitive sociality," where collective life unfolds beyond dominant structures. Carlton’s figures inhabit ambiguous realms—neither entirely confined by structure nor completely unbound by freedom. In these carefully orchestrated spaces, they embody a continual negotiation of identity, asserting agency and evoking the enduring presence of historical memory.
Carlton’s approach draws from the layered surfaces of Alex Katz and David Hockney, as well as Jordan Casteel’s nuanced portrayals of community and everyday encounters. Through gesture, color, and composition, his work reimagines presence, offering new ways of seeing and understanding Black life beyond fixed narratives.
About the Artist
Brandon Carlton’s practice is rooted in self-definition and a commitment to honest representation. His guiding philosophy—“You gotta love yourself”—is not just a personal mantra but a framework for engaging with the world. For Carlton, self-acceptance is foundational to his artistic process, shaping how he portrays the nuances of identity, intimacy, and personal evolution.
Born in Baltimore, Carlton’s early exposure to construction work alongside his mother introduced him to the materials and textures that continue to inform his practice. His paintings challenge narrow representations of Blackness by embracing the full spectrum of skin tones and lived experiences, moving beyond simplistic binaries. Merging figuration with his background in streetwear and modeling, he constructs portraits that exist between memory and imagination. His work draws from a wide range of influences, from the stylized realism of Alex Katz and David Hockney to the everyday humor and surrealism of animated television.
For Carlton, painting is both a creative and existential necessity—an ongoing process of self-determination. His work resists easy categorization, instead offering layered narratives that reflect the complexity of contemporary Black life.

Thaddeus Tukes Quintet | Jazz Showcase
Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Chicago
Thaddeus Tukes - vibraphone
Kevin King - saxophone
Will Howard - bass
Jayden Richardson - drums (Thurs-Sat)
Kenari Allison - drums (Sun)
Candace Tukes - vocals (Sun)
After School Matters Jazz Big Band (Sun)
Presented as the "World's best vibraphonist" by World Expo 2020 in Dubai, composer and percussionist Thaddeus Tukes honors the legacy of the vibraphone within the jazz tradition and beyond. His virtuosity and creativity "brings poetry to the vibraphone" (Chicago Tribune, 2019), which has captivated audiences from Carnegie Hall in New York to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Thaddeus says he is a proud practitioner of the "Chicago Vibe," and hails his hometown as the foundation of the modern jazz aesthetic. The future of the jazz tradition has arrived, and Thaddeus Tukes is at the forefront.
Tukes began playing the piano at the age of five, and soon began inclusive percussion instruction with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Percussion Scholarship Program with teacher Patricia Dash and Douglas Waddell, upon recommendation from Edgar Alan Poe Classical School music teacher, Barry Elmore. Although classically trained, he was inspired to play Jazz vibraphone after hearing vibraphonists Lionel Hampton and Stefon Harris. Tukes later played percussion instruments and piano in the Jazz Combo, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Percussion ensembles at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago. In addition to a feature performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the school’s band, he received superior ratings in city- and state-wide solo competitions in classical music, and recognition as the best Illinois Jazz vibraphonist among high school competitors by the Illinois Music Education Association.
Tukes graduated with a combined bachelor’s degree in Jazz piano and vibraphone studies from Northwestern University, the first Jazz vibraphone degree program at a non-conservatory university, under the direction of saxophonist Victor Goines of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and vibraphonist Jim Cooper. Tukes earned the honors of being a Ravinia Jazz Scholar, Jazz Institute of Chicago’s Kewitt-Wang Scholar, Luminarts Fellow, Vivian K Harsh Society awardee and Percussive Arts Society/Yamaha Terry Gibbs Vibraphone Scholarship recipient. As a former apprentice of Chicago’s Gallery 37/After School Matters Center for the Arts Jazz Band program during high school under the direction of pianist Roger Harris and multi-reedist Chip Gdalman, Tukes is currently its director.
The summer of 2020 found Tukes forming a group of local musicians called the Chicago Freedom Ensemble, a music performance and social justice advocacy organization. Through the Chicago Freedom Ensemble, he has supported and led protests, provided political and financial literacy for the local music community, conducted jam sessions throughout the city, and created a citywide network of young multicultural instrumentalists. Tukes, along with a small delegation of these musicians, were invited to and performed at the 2020 World’s Expo in Dubai.
In March 2022, Tukes led an all-star Jazz band in the prestigious Chicago Symphony Center presents Jazz Series as the youngest bandleader of the season, as well as the only Chicago native.
Tukes has released three albums under his self-owned label, Vibetown Studios. He performs as a bandleader and special guest at jazz festivals and various Jazz clubs and ensembles throughout the country. He is a member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. When not performing, Tukes can be found teaching percussion ensembles at various elementary and high schools in the Chicagoland area.

EARTH DAY CLEAN UP & BIRTHDAY PARTY with TRASH PEOPLE OF LOGAN SQUARE | Greetings From Chicago Mural
Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Chicago
Trash People exists to facilitate community connection and contribution in Chicago. AND THIS EARTH DAY IS ALSO OUR THIRD BIRTHDAY! WAHOO!!
Huge thanks to
WasteNot Compost
& the
Kambs Jenning Group
for being about it and supporting this event.
Your two options:
JOIN THE CLEAN UP!
Limited spots available, but it'll be a big one! Please bring any supplies you might have. Please only sign up if you're committed to attending, so we can include as many people as possible. The Clean Up will finish by 12pm - hang around for a beer with us after!
Clean up full or can't make it that early?
Join us from 12pm at Pilot Project, 2140 N Milwaukee Ave for a beer and some food to celebrate our third birthday! We'll be hanging out until around 2pm. Our limited edition tees and sweatshirts will be available to buy! All welcome to this part of the day - come alone or bring your friends!
A friendly note for corporate teams: we get a lot of requests around Spring for corporate teams to join our clean up events. Our events fill up fast and are intended for our community members. If you're interested in attending a clean up as a team volunteering opportunity, please email us at hello@trashpeople.org to talk through how we can help! We'd love to hear from you.
What to expect:
Meet us at 10am at the GREETINGS FROM CHICAGO MURAL - please arrive on time to help us run a smooth event!
Please note advanced registration is essential due to the number of interested participants - please don't just show up if you haven't registered, it will overwhelm us!
Everyone is welcome, and we hope you'll join us, especially if you haven't been before! We are a friendly bunch and exist not only to contribute to our community, but to make new friends within it, too :)
If you have any questions, the best way to reach us is via Instagram @trashpeopleoflogansquare. If you don't have Instagram, feel free to email us at hello@trashpeople.org
What to bring
Please do check the weather and bring appropriate clothing/supplies - specifically you may like to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and hand sanitizer. Be sure to wear comfortable and weather-appropriate shoes.
No need to bring anything else - we supply all equipment!
If you want to bring a friend, please also have them register via the Eventbrite link so we can plan accordingly - we also need all attendees to acknowledge our waiver.
What not to bring
We love pets, but you'll need both hands, and we'll be working near busy streets! We regret dogs aren't allowed to join Trash People events, but you're very welcome to show us pictures :)
We mostly work near busy roads, so for safety reasons, our events are adult-only (18+).
If the event is fully booked, please add yourself to the waitlist or join us for the next one! In order to keep the group manageable for us as organizers, to ensure we have enough supplies, and to ensure all participants have signed our waiver, we require all attendees to have formally RSVPd through Eventbrite.
