Poetry Reading: Phases by Tramaine Suubi | Women & Children First

Apr 4, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Chicago
Arts
Literary Arts
Please help us celebrate the poetry collection Phases by Tramaine Suubi , who will be joined by Kembabazi . Please note: This event is free to attend, but registration is requested. Masks are required for our in-person events. In this electrifying debut poetry collection—written with the ferocity of Rita Dove’s groundbreaking Thomas and Beulah —a critically acclaimed award-winning talent explores a wide range of emotions, from anxiety to ecstasy reflecting the moon's phases, from Waning Gibbous to Full. Both intimate and intricately structured Tramaine Suubi’s remarkable work is inspired by the moon—its phases’ effects on water, the Earth, and our bodies. Phases relishes in the beauty of change, even that caused by heartbreak. Suubi’s refreshing, vulnerable verse begs to be underlined, memorized, and shared; each of her poems operate as love letters to the cyclical healing that occurs in nature, in our bodies, and in the bodies that have come before us. Tramaine Suubi - Tramaine Suubi is a multilingual writer from Kampala, and a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She is the author of phases and stages. She has also published creative writing in over fifteen literary anthologies, journals, magazines, and reviews . Tramaine works towards the total liberation of all oppressed people by any means necessary. Kembabazi - Kembabazi is an Ugandan-American multi-hyphenate community builder who believes humanity’s purpose is to love and be loved. The IRS would probably call her a human service worker. But truly Kembabazi enjoys investing in those around them whether it’s as an in-home caregiver, mutual aid community organizer, after school program educator, or poet/chef/videographer/designer/musician/artist. They’re honored to celebrate another multi-hyphenate who has left an indelible mark on Kembabazi’s soul. Accessibility: This event is hosted at the bookstore, which is a wheelchair accessible space. Masks are required. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. To request ASL interpretation for this event, please email events@womenandchildrenfirst.com by no later than 14 days before the event. For other questions or access needs, please email events@womenandchildrenfirst.com. Information Source: Women & Children First | eventbrite

Apr 6, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Chicago
Concerts
In a rare performance, Pakistani musicians Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and the Saami Brothers join forces with Zeb Bangash to explore the spiritual healing power of khayal music. Ustad Naseeruddin Saami is a distinguished classical vocalist, belonging to a lineage of musicians that spans over 800 years. A master of the khayal and dhrupad genres, Ustad Saami is a revered figure in the Delhi Gharana, known for his profound knowledge of classical ragas and his deep, resonant voice. His contributions to South Asian classical music have made him a living legend, and his performances are not just concerts—they are spiritual experiences that bridge the past and present, connecting audiences across cultural and temporal divides. Ustad Saami, the last living practitioner of a mesmerizing ancient 49-note microtonal vocal scale, is a master of both khayal—a genre of Indian classical vocal music—and qawwali, a form of devotional music performed by Sufi musicians. He is returning to SAI and will be joined by his sons, the Saami Brothers, for this special event that carries forward the family’s khayal and qawwali music legacy. Joining the family is Pakistani pop sensation of Coke Studio fame, Zeb Bangash, who is one of Ustad Saami’s star students. She will open the show by debuting a khayal work. *The Center for Cultural Vibrancy is a presenting partner for this performance. Information Source: South Asia Institute | eventbrite

Evoke Gallery Presents HyperREAL Exhibition | Evoke Gallery

Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Chicago
Arts
Fine Art
Surrealism has always been a movement of transformation, a refusal to accept reality as fixed, an insistence on constructing new worlds through fragmentation, exaggeration, and dream logic. HYPERREAL presents a contemporary surrealist landscape, where the club kid movement is a central force in expanding the boundaries of selfhood, materiality, and embodied expression. Through multi-media works including sculpture, painting, photography, film, and performance, this exhibition explores surrealism’s evolution beyond the canvas and into lived experience. In the club, the self is sculpted, remixed, and multiplied. Identity becomes an assemblage of mask and persona, the grotesque and the divine, the synthetic and the ephemeral. Club kids materialize surrealism onto their bodies, using fashion, found objects, and movement to construct hyper-exaggerated figures that exist outside conventional reality. ARTISTS: VICTOR EDWARDS ( @ultraspacecadet ) LANIA SPROLES ( @laniasprolesartist ) GABRIEL CHALFIN-PINEY-GONZALEZ ( @citrus.history ) ÁLE CAMPOS ( @celestes.wrld ) JEREMY PLOTKIN WONG ( @jeremy_pw ) JAVI GUTIERREZ ( @javi.x.gutierrez ) KEROSENE ( @kerosene.333 ) BERNARD COLBERT ( @bernard_colbert ) LECHEDEVIRGEN ( @lechedevirgen ) This exhibition also pays tribute to JoJo Baby, a Chicago icon whose presence in the underground scene embodied the surrealist ethos of self-invention. Their work, like that of so many club kids before and after, transformed the body into an artwork, dissolving the line between the real and the imagined, the ordinary and the otherworldly.
