Arts
Comedy
Our immensely popular Dinner Detective shows are set in the present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows, here you will find no cheesy costumes, no recited campy dialogue and no hokey song and dance. Our performers are dressed just like everyone else, leaving all of the guests to suspect who is a part of the show and who is not. In many instances, guests are seated with the performers and don't even realize it until they die...the performers, that is! Our Detectives proceed to interrogate everyone and find clues as the mystery unfolds. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the Top Sleuth who solves the crime. The Dinner Detective performs at The Hyatt Regency Milwaukee, a full-service hotel in beautiful downtown Milwaukee, WI. We offer an amazing murder mystery show paired with a fantastic four-course plated dinner. You will receive tray-passed appetizers, salad, and dessert along with a choice of Seared Chicken Breast OR Vegetarian Pasta Primavera. Coffee and tea are included upon request, and there is a cash-only cash bar available as well. Please note, prop guns, loud simulated gunshots, and short lighting blackouts are used as part of the performance. Our show does not have a theme or time period, and our performers are not in costume. You can choose whether or not to participate in the show! Our guests are encouraged but not required to perform or participate. However, since our actors are hidden in the audience, other audience members may interact with and interrogate you on their own. The show takes place all around you! Our actors are seated all around the room, possibly at your table. We also ensure each table gets to see every clue and witness every important scene, so all guests have an equal chance to solve the mystery! The Dinner Detective is a show geared toward adults. We have a strict age limit of 15 years old, due to mild adult content, loud noises, and swearing. Business casual or dressy casual wear is required for our events, unless otherwise specified in the event description! A gallery talk with Dr. Deanna Arble (Biology) and Lynne Shumow (Haggerty Museum of Art) featuring the exhibition Parallel Play: The Art of Science & the Science of Art. Parallel Play: The Art of Science & the Science of Art was created as an integral component of Marquette’s Biology class, Creative Problem Solving. This cross-disciplinary course teaches STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) students to embrace divergent thinking as a path to innovative problem solving. The class is team-taught by Dr. Deanna Arble, Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences and Lynne Shumow, Curator for Academic Engagement, Haggerty Museum of Art. Featuring work from the Haggerty’s permanent collection, the Parallel Play exhibition makes connections between the work of artists and scientists with a special emphasis on the essential elements of scientific research—rejection, revision and the formulation of new ideas. The exhibition aims to demystify the process of innovation across disciplines and to illuminate the multiple routes of discovery and interpretation that art has to offer. YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED! Presented by Kirk Nickel, PhD, Marc and Lillian Rojtman Curator of European Art Please join us for this engaging 20-minute Lunchtime Talk featuring the work of Ray Johnson. A New York Times art critic once labeled Johnson “New York’s most famous unknown artist.” A contemporary of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, Johnson today is internationally recognized for his achievements in both collage and correspondence art. This month’s Art Talk will present some two dozen pieces of mail art that Johnson sent to the Haggerty Museum through the U.S. postal system in the early 1990s. Currently on view in the Museum’s anniversary exhibition, The Big 4-0 Vol. 2: New Views of the Collection, these wonderfully playful and witty creations will forever locate the Haggerty within Johnson’s seemingly infinite web of correspondents. What does a curator curate? Join Annemarie Sawkins, independent curator and art historian, for a lively talk about art, exhibitions, and the art of curating – using three of her recent and ongoing exhibitions as examples. We will start with a preview of A Creative Place: Art from Northeastern Wisconsin from 1940 to Present, a major historical exhibition from January 24 until May 18 at the Trout Museum. Inspired by the recent publication A Creative Place: The History of Wisconsin Art, this exhibition presents more than 120 works of art, highlighting a diverse array of artists, themes, media, and techniques. It will trace the development of the region’s artistic institutions and showcase both historical artists such as Jessie Kalmbach Chase, Agnes Wainwright (the first female art curator of the Neville Public Museum), Gerhard C.F. Miller, Thomas Dietrich, and Norbert Kox and contemporary creatives, such as Tony Conrad, Suzanne Rose, Christine Style, Michelle Grabner, and Beth Lipman, among many others. On February 27, the exhibition Kōgyo Japanese Theatre Woodblock Prints opens at the Allen Priebe Gallery, UW-Oshkosh, featuring more than 50 woodblock prints by the Japanese artist Tsukioka Kogyo (1869–1927) from the collection of Jan Serr and John Shannon. Kōgyo was, and remains, the preeminent creator of images of the classical Japanese dance-drama known as Noh. Between the 1890s and his death in 1927, Kōgyo produced five major sets of Noh prints thereby helping to save this national art form. This exhibition runs until March 20. This programwill end with discussion of Profound Prints: Art by Exceptional Women, an exhibition first presented at Edgewood College in Madison and recently shown at the Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana. As its title suggests, the prints in this collection are among the strongest by the printmakers represented. The many celebrated artists—Alice Neel, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Betye Saar along with Wisconsin artists Frances J. Myers,Jan Serr, Jill Sebastian, and Michelle Grabner—have succeeded in developing their own unique artistic vocabularies. Their voices, as expressed in rich and diverse subject matter, are a hallmark of this exhibition.
