Join George Monbiot, an esteemed environmental activist and writer, for an enlightening evening discussing his latest book, 'Invisible Doctrine'. In this thought-provoking work, Monbiot exposes the pervasive influence of neoliberalism, the prevailing ideology of our time, which affects every aspect of our lives. Often, we struggle to articulate its true nature, having been convinced that it is an inherent and inevitable force. However, Monbiot, along with filmmaker Peter Hutchison, debunks this myth by revealing how a small group of affluent elites co-opted a fringe philosophy from the 1930s, centered around competition, to safeguard their wealth and power. This invisible doctrine has had insidious consequences, causing us to perceive our multiple crises—ranging from climate catastrophes and economic crashes to the erosion of public services and escalating child poverty—as unrelated. In reality, these issues have been exacerbated by the neoliberal agenda, which subordinates democracy to the sway of money. Monbiot and Hutchison skillfully connect the dots, tracing a clear path from neoliberalism to fascism, a dangerous ideology that capitalizes on people's hopelessness and despair. In direct opposition to the fairy tales of capitalism and populist conspiracy theories, Monbiot and Hutchison lay the foundation for a fresh political approach. Their vision is rooted in true participatory democracy and the concept of private sufficiency and public luxury. By embracing this inspiring vision, we can work towards bringing an end to the neoliberal era. George Monbiot's unwavering commitment to environmental causes and his tireless efforts as a writer, journalist, and political activist have indelibly shaped British heritage. His work has ignited awareness, spurred social and political change, and instilled in many a sense of responsibility and urgency to safeguard the natural heritage of the United Kingdom. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with George Monbiot as he shares his insights at Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford on June 5, 2024. Tickets are priced at £8. Be part of the movement for change.
