Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: to write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be
the
Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the twentieth century.
When Margaret invites them both for a one-month trial period, after which she’ll choose the person who’ll tell her story, there are three things keeping Alice’s head in the game.
One: Alice genuinely likes people, which means people usually like Alice—and she has a whole month to win the legendary woman over.
Two: She’s ready for this job and the chance to impress her perennially unimpressed family with a Serious Publication.
Three: Hayden Anderson, who should have no reason to be concerned about losing this book, is glowering at her in a shaken-to-the core way that suggests he sees her as competition.
But the problem is, Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story. Pieces they can’t swap to put together because of an ironclad NDA and an inconvenient yearning pulsing between them every time they’re in the same room.
And it’s becoming abundantly clear that their story—just like the tale Margaret’s spinning—could be a mystery, tragedy, or love ballad . . . depending on who’s telling it.

About The Wharf Water Cleanup
Every year, The Wharf's amazing restaurants, shops, music venues, and special events bring millions of visitors directly to DC's waterways, so we take our environmental stewardship and water cleanliness very seriously. We created floating wetlands to collect water pollutants, we gather all our trash in sealed containers, and we even constructed giant cisterns to capture runoff before it reaches the river. However, our most visible impact on the waterways comes each year during our
Washington Channel Water Cleanup
.
When it rains, wood debris and trash are washed from shores throughout the region into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. The floating trash and debris are then pushed into the Washington Channel by the tide and wind, where they gather along the shore. All this debris harms the environment and aquatic life, damages piers and boat propellers, and is unsightly for everyone who lives, works, and recreates on the water.
Our community's annual cleanup efforts regularly remove multiple dumpsters full of wood, trash, and debris from the Washington Channel.
RELEASE:
By registering for this event, you agree to release and hold harmless the District Wharf and all associated parties from any and all liability and damages arising from your participation in this event. You agree to all rules and regulations above.

The contemplative electronic pop of IDER is highlighted by the dual lead vocals of songwriters Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville, who fall in and out of unison and harmonies. Their typically spare, melancholy tone was introduced on the single "Sorry" in 2016.
Markwick and Somerville met in the early 2010s at the University of Falmouth, where they did a music project together and played in a couple of the same bands. It was during this period in Cornwall that they began writing together. The pair remained friends and later launched IDER as roommates in North London. Their 2016 debut track, "Sorry," was self-produced and self-released.

The Electoral College & How Other Republics Elect Heads of Government | The Institute of World Politics
Apr 23, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
About the Lecture:
The American Constitution is the world’s oldest. It was designed by our Founders to withstand the storms of faction, geographic expansion, war – and even Civil War. The Founders studied history. They knew that democracies always fail. Plato writes in The Republic that “democracies always become tyrannies.” How is it that our 235-year-old Constitution still governs our land? In a phrase - “checks and balances.” The Constitution has internal mechanisms that, while imperfect, were created because men are quite imperfect. Just as a sailor must tack back and forth to reach his destination, the Constitution forces us to share and exchange the levers of power to keep the ship of state from floundering and on course. When someone says, “The Electoral College is undemocratic,” a fair reply may be - “Of course it is. We are a republic, not a democracy.” Even so, America is much more democratic than most republics in choosing a head of state. Was Mr. Churchill’s name on the ballots of all Englishmen? Was Mr. Trudeau’s name on the votes of all Canadians? Decidedly not. We will explore why virtually all sustained republics embrace “checks and balances” and a “two-step” electoral process - not
a
simple majority rule. There is nothing simple about self-government.
About the Speaker:
Mr. Michael C. Maibach
is a seasoned professional in global business diplomacy. From 2003 to 2012, he was the President & CEO of the European-American Business Council after serving for 18 years as the Vice President of Global Government Affairs for the Intel Corporation. Today, he is a Trustee and Managing Director of the James Wilson Institute, and a Distinguished Fellow on American Federalism at Save Our States. Mr. Maibach has earned M.A. degrees from Northern Illinois University, Georgetown University, Ashland University, and The Institute of World Politics, where he also serves as a member of our Honorary Board of Advisors. He frequently speaks at schools and civic groups to discuss and defend the Founders’ Constitution and their Electoral College design.

Inside the Resistance: Fighting Tyranny with Local Governance in Venezuela | JHU Bloomberg Center
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
For over two decades, Venezuela’s regime has dismantled democracy through systematic human rights violations, the erosion of local government autonomy, and the persecution of dozens of mayors. Nicolás Maduro’s crackdown targeted David Smolansky, former mayor of El Hatillo, for his efforts to strengthen local institutions, combat crime, and tackle corruption in one of the world’s most violent and corrupt nations. This discussion will examine how local governments can resist authoritarianism and what Venezuela’s experience reveals about the broader struggle for democracy. With SNF Agora Visiting Fellow and Dissident in Residence David Smolansky and moderated by SNF Agora Assistant Director of Public Programs Mary Bruce.
This is an in-person event only. Livestreaming will not be available.
David Smolansky
served as the Mayor of El Hatillo City in Caracas, Venezuela. His tenure as Mayor gained national and international recognition for its transparency and notable reduction in kidnappings, despite operating in one of the world’s most violent capitals. His commitment to addressing human rights violations and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela led him to play a pivotal role in non-violent protests against Maduro’s dictatorship. As a result of defending democratic values while serving in local government, he faced arbitrary arrest warrants, removal from his Mayoral role, illegal disqualification for public service, banned from voting, and ultimately, forced into exile.
After fleeing Venezuela, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) appointed Smolansky as the special envoy to address the Venezuelan migration and refugee crisis, the largest in the world. He authored 15 reports and conducted over 20 official visits to 11 countries in the Americas, advocating for policies to protect and integrate Venezuelan migrants and refugees who have fled Maduro’s regime.
