Naomi Falk presents 'The Surrender of Man' | Third Place Books Ravenna
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED

This event is free and open to the public. When you RSVP to one of our free events during the month of June, you can add a donation to TheQueerTransProject, a Black-led, trans-led nonprofit organization dedicated to providing life-changing gender-affirming resources, uplifting trans voices, and building power for our communities. Their Flight Assistance Program has covered over 125,000 miles so far, ensuring that those seeking gender-affirming care can get there safely. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is recommended in advance. About The Surrender of Man. . .A modern-day manifesto, The Surrender of Man by Naomi Falk positions art as a concave mirror that reflects both ourselves as well as the pains and ecstasies of our multifaceted lives via aesthetics, godlessness, womanhood, gloom, art criticism, and subjectivity. In this genre-defying memoir-in-series, Falk weaves together a rich tapestry of art and introspection, examining twenty pieces of art that have profoundly shaped her perception of herself and humanity. Each chapter fixates on a singular work—a painting, a stone, a film, a photograph—exploring both its art historical context and its personal significance. The author features a diverse range of artists, from cherished dear friends to the familiar brilliance of Louise Bourgeois, Remedios Varo, Gregory Crewdson, Wendy Red Star, or Shiva Ahmadi. The readings of the works metamorphose from pure expressions of pain to those that are emotionally vast. Interspersed throughout are fever dream fragments of narrative memoir pooled from Falk’s life with a prose style akin to Clarice Lispector or Jean Rhys. Falk's exploration of her own relationship to both art and writing moves within and beyond the work's central question: Why does the writer continue to choose life? The Surrender of Man is a blend of memoir, philosophy, and art criticism which serves as a necessary antidote to the quotidian. Naomi Falk is a writer, editor, and book designer. She is the production and design director of powerHouse Books, the senior editor of Archway Editions, Mina Hamedi's co-founder of the goth art magazine NAUSIKÂE NYC, and a periodic publisher of experimental artist monographs under the moniker Crop Circle Press. Her bookmaking practices are informed by her years working in the Publications Department of the Museum of Modern Art and as the founding editorial director of Ki Smith Gallery, where she wrote, designed, printed, and hand-bound over 15 exhibition catalogs and artist books. The Surrender of Man is her debut memoir. About Third Place BooksFounded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park, Washington, Third Place Books is dedicated to the creation of a community around books and the ideas inside them. We think the best relationships are forged when we are comfortable, relaxed and free of pressure. Preferring instead to think of the evening as a casual night out where one can truly be themselves. We do not use traditional 'speed dating' offerings such as bells, whistles and name-tags. Instead we focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to meeting others; a great venue, a personable host and a staff to assist.
Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile ‘Smart-Card’. As the event begins, log-in to your scorecard and let the flirting begin. You'll be able to choose whom you wish to meet again, to what degree you like them and have until midnight to submit your final selections for matching. Once the clock strikes midnight - return to our platform to see your matches. You can also access your profile via mobile, tablet or PC. Our platform isn't an app so it requires absolutely no downloading and can be accessed directly from our website, anytime.
Should you have any questions - feel free to ask away. Take the time before the event starts to settle in - have a beverage if you would like and mingle should you wish. Chat up our Hosts for tips or simply to ask, which direction the bar is in! After being shown to your table, the ladies will remain seated for the duration of the event. The gents move from lovely lady to lovely lady every six to seven minutes. Your mobile scorecard gives you the ability to see all the participants attending your event, upload your picture, make your selections and be notified of your matches all from your phone.
Don't fret about figuring out if the person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.
