We are thrilled to invite you to the 2025 Society for US Intellectual History annual conference! This year our conference will be held in Detroit, Michigan, on November 6-8, 2025, at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Detroit Downtown – Fort Shelby . This year's theme is "Creativity and Renewal" with a particular focus on the crossing of borders (of race, gender, class, nationality, religion, and culture) and the hybridized forms that result; the ways in which art, music, and dance become vehicles for intellectual debate and resistance; the nexus of capital, labor, and technology in the modern era; the dreams and failures of mid-twentieth century liberalism and urban policy; and the intersection of religion and social justice. There will, of course, be papers on many topics. We hope the conference allows us to explore the ways in which social, political, and environmental distress can plant seeds of a better future. How do moments of crisis foster new ideas, policies, art, music, conceptions of modernity? How do intellectuals and artists encounter and embrace technological change? Where are the signs of renewal in our field, our discipline, and our nation? Due to the prohibitive costs of hybrid events (in combination with the challenges of making such events pleasant for participants), there will be no hybrid options for presentation or attendance. Within those parameters, we plan to facilitate a conference that is accessible and welcoming to all who identify under USIH’s broad definition of intellectual history as “ideas in action.” We are committed to using the meeting as a venue for strengthening institutional connections to related organizations and contributing to S-USIH’s ongoing efforts in DEI. More conference information, including the preliminary program, is found at this link: https://s-usih.org/conference/s-usih-2025-conference-detroit/ Location Double Tree Suites by Hilton - Detroit Downtown, Ft. USIH will follow all local rules relating to Covid 19 conditions, vaccination, social distancing, masking, and public health. Currently, neither Michigan nor Detroit has a mask mandate in effect, but conditions could change. By registering for the conference, you are confirming that you are up to date with your vaccination status as recommended by the CDC. At the height of the civil rights movement, Charles C. Diggs Jr. (1922-1998) was the consummate power broker. In a political career spanning 1951 to 1980, Diggs, Michigan's first Black member of Congress, was the only federal official to attend the trial of Emmett Till's killers, worked behind the scenes with Martin Luther King Jr., and founded the Congressional Black Caucus. He was also the chief architect of legislation that restored home rule to Washington, DC, and almost single-handedly ignited the American anti-apartheid movement in the 1960s. Drawing on extensive archival research, including Diggs's rarely seen personal papers, FBI documents, and original interviews with family members and political associates, political scientist Marion Orr reveals that Diggs practiced a politics of strategic moderation. Orr argues that this quiet approach was more effective than the militant race politics practiced by Adam Clayton Powell and more appealing than the conservative Chicago-style approach of William Dawson--two of Diggs's better-known Black contemporaries. Vividly written and deeply researched, House of Diggs is the first biography of Congressman Charles C. Diggs Jr., one of the most consequential Black federal legislators in US history. Congressman Diggs was a legislative lion whose unfortunate downfall punctuated his distinguished career and pushed him and his historic accomplishments out of sight. Now, for the first time, House of Diggs restores him to his much-deserved place in the history of American politics. Marion Orr is the Frederick Lippitt Professor of Public Policy and professor of political science and urban studies at Brown University. Information Source: this is a bookstore | Bookbug | eventbrite
