Shinoda Toko: Abstract Calligraphy | Asian Art Museum

Shinoda Toko: Abstract Calligraphy | Asian Art Museum

Feb 6–Sep 15, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
A trailblazer in 20th-century Japanese calligraphy, Shinoda Toko (1913–2021) reshaped the art of ink abstraction with her distinctive and dynamic style. Shinoda studied traditional calligraphy but soon rejected the practice of copying past masters, likening it to “creating a fake.” A calligrapher at heart, Shinoda preferred lithography over woodblock printing, as it allowed her to directly apply her brushwork to the plate, capturing the nuances of each stroke. As she transitioned from painting legible Chinese characters toward avant-garde abstraction, Shinoda initially faced resistance in Japan and moved to New York in 1956. “I wanted to see how my works would be received in a foreign country,” she later recalled, “where letters are not read as letters.” Throughout her 107-year lifetime, the artist consistently sought her own vision of beauty, free from the confines of tradition.

From self-filling wine glasses and teapots made of tea, to crisp modernist spoons and flatware made from discarded CDs, Table Manners explores the performance of dining. The exhibition includes works by Virgil Abloh, Joe Colombo, Zaha Hadid, Roberto Lugo, and many more, accompanied by illustrations and textiles by Lucy Stark.

San Francisco
Exhibitions
Hawks, pheasants, ducks, quail, egrets, and other birds appear frequently in Japanese paintings. With roots in the Chinese “bird and flower” genre, some are traditionally associated with a particular season or sentiment; others were chosen by artists and patrons simply for their beauty. The paintings currently on view in the Tateuchi Japanese Galleries use birds as both decorations and symbols, representing the seasons, strength, longevity, fidelity, or good fortune. They include decorative rimpa-style paintings; large, Kano-style screen paintings; and intimate hanging scrolls decorated in ink and faint colors.

The personal becomes universal in recent work by pioneering Taiwanese artist Yuan Goang-Ming (b. Taipei, 1965), whose starkly poetic videos and installations examine the fragmented and surreal nature of contemporary life.Yuan’s work trains an unblinking, glacially cool digital gaze on poignant scenes of global and domestic unease. From the eerie stillness of empty streets during Taiwan’s annual air raid drills to the chaotic aftermath of an explosion detonated in his own living room, the artist captures moments that resonate with current living conditions worldwide.

Ruth Asawa Retrospective | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Apr 5–Sep 2, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Nearly 12 years after her death, SFMOMA is presenting the first major national and international retrospective of Ruth Asawa’s work, a groundbreaking artist whose work is fully explored in her work. Born in California in 1926, Asawa was forcibly sent to an internment camp during World War II because of her Japanese descent. After her release, she attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina and began a prolific career that spanned six decades, spanning a variety of media from painting to sculpture, often drawing on organic forms and reflecting her deep affection for nature. The exhibition will feature 300 of Asawa’s works in chronological order, with her signature hanging, looping wire sculptures—known for their “form within a form” constructions—taking a prominent place. The exhibition will also highlight her contributions to art education and public sculpture. In particular, a specially curated gallery will recreate Asawa’s home and studio in San Francisco’s Noe Valley, offering a glimpse into her family life and creative inspirations. The exhibition will feature her sketchbooks and experiments with materials such as copper, ceramic, electroplating and bronze, as well as the original hand-carved mahogany door of her former home and works by artists she admired, such as Josef Albers, Ray Johnson, Peggy Tolk-Watkins and Marguerite Wildenhain.

San Francisco
Exhibitions
Exploring moments from the rich history of the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) — before its closure, the West Coast’s oldest fine art school — this exhibition spotlights works by more than 50 SFAI alumni and former faculty included in the museum’s collection. The presentation underscores the school’s crucial role in fostering creativity and experimentation, featuring works across media since the post–World War II era by artists like Ansel Adams, Joan Brown, Miguel Calderón, Imogen Cunningham, Mike Henderson, Candice Lin, and Carlos Villa, among others. The exhibition also includes a dynamic and quirky range of archival materials drawn from the SFMOMA Library and the SFAI Archive. These encompass ephemera from the founding of the school’s photography department, posters for 1950s Beat-era galleries run by artist alumni, student newspapers, and flyers from the punk and new wave music scenes of the 1970s. Taking its title from a line in the final 2022 commencement speech by faculty member and alumnus Dewey Crumpler, People Make This Place is a collaborative effort across the museum in partnership with the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive.

Vikrant Bhise: Archival Historicity/Dalit Panthers | Asian Art Museum

Vikrant Bhise: Archival Historicity/Dalit Panthers | Asian Art Museum

Apr 3, 2025–May 23, 2026 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Filled with a revolutionary spirit, Vikrant Bhise’s Archival Historicity series offers a dynamic visual archive of the Dalit Panthers, a group dedicated to seeking freedom from caste, gender, and labor inequities for India’s most oppressed and marginalized peoples. Founded in 1972 in Mumbai and taking inspiration from the Oakland-based Black Panther Party for Self Defense, the Dalit Panthers sought to align themselves with their Bay Area counterparts in a global struggle for equality and social change. Bhise’s intimate, postcard-sized works are made up of many layers: painted and printed elements from manifestos and pamphlets interact and overlap with newspaper images, urban monuments, and symbolic cartoons. Installed in a continuous sequence spanning a gallery wall, these selections from the ongoing series “evoke the small, localized experiences that add up to global movements, while underscoring the enduring significance of the Panthers’ call for equality,” says Padma Dorje Maitland, Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of the Art of the Indian Subcontinent. This exhibition marks their first showing in a major museum.
Gurjeet Singh: When Words Hurt | Asian Art Museum

Gurjeet Singh: When Words Hurt | Asian Art Museum

Apr 3, 2025–Mar 23, 2026 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Chandigarh-based artist Gurjeet Singh’s first show at an American institution offers a moving consideration of the emotional impact of words. Teary Eyes is a soft sculpture stitched together from pieces of dress fabric. Despite a playful, colorful surface, the work conveys a deep vulnerability; this feeling grows deeper as we witness a violent exchange of words in the painting Prickly Words. Portraits of Singh with the figure further personalize the exhibition. “These works explore what it means to be seen, to express yourself, and the power of language to build us up and tear us down,” says exhibition curator Padma Dorje Maitland, Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of the Art of the Indian Subcontinent. “Even if we accept ourselves and feel confident, the wrong word at the wrong time can deeply impact us. Whether Sikh, South Asian, Queer, soft, or hard, Singh’s work addresses the complex challenges of fashioning how we appear in the world.”
Kunié Sugiura: Photopainting | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Kunié Sugiura: Photopainting | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Apr 26–Sep 14, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
This exhibition is the first US survey of the work of Kunié Sugiura, an artist whose boundary-defying engagement with the photographic medium spans over sixty years. Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942, Sugiura came to the United States in 1963 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she majored in photography. After graduation, she relocated to New York and has lived there ever since. Sugiura’s practice embraces a hybrid approach, blending various mediums and expressing her bicultural identity. The balancing of dualisms —Japanese/American, organic/human-made, and painting/photography — defines her work. Sugiura has stated that her cross-fertilization of photography with painting and sculpture partly stems from her desire that photography be taken seriously as an art form.

Tradition and Innovation: Contemporary Korean Ceramics | Asian Art Museum

May 8–Dec 1, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Offering a rare chance to see contemporary Korean ceramics from the museum collection, this exhibition highlights clay creations by four prominent 20th-century artists. Their various approaches, each one an heir to its own creative lineage, demonstrate innovations deeply rooted in Korea’s rich legacy of ceramics production. On one side, the lively surface textures of stoneware and porcelain works by Roe Kyung-Jo (b. 1951), Kim See-man (b.1958), and Yoon Kwang-jo (b. 1946) bring fresh updates to traditional marbling and glazing techniques. Exhibition curator and Assistant Curator for Korean Art Yoon-Jee Choi notes that “buncheong (분청), the central decoration of Kim and Yoon’s vessels, is one of the most innovative techniques of Korean ceramics; the two artists advance this traditional method by exploring a sense of rhythm and spontaneity.” Directly opposite are three smooth, black pillars of stacked onggi (옹기) — vessels historically used to carry fermented foods such as kimchi — by Cho Chung-Hyun (b. 1940). Standing as tall as people, each of these appealing works seems animated by its own unique personality, conveyed via subtle variations in shape and size.

Join author Carol Verburg in conversation on her latest book, The Theatrical Adventures of Edward Gorey: Rare Drawings, Scripts, and Stories . Edward Gorey (1925–2000) was a prodigious and original artist, beloved for his instantly recognizable style. But what many fans don’t know is that Edward Gorey was also a prolific theater artist. Edward Gorey’s designs for the Tony Award–winning Broadway production of Dracula were brilliantly inventive, and he devoted the last decade of his life to writing, designing, directing, and producing original theatrical works, from major productions to dozens of wildly creative “entertainments” on Cape Cod. Written by Edward Gorey’s friend and theater collaborator Carol Verburg, this deluxe hardcover volume showcases Gorey's abundant body of theatrical work, giving it the lavish, full‐color treatment it deserves. The book is filled with Gorey’s own scripts, behind‐the‐scenes anecdotes from collaborators, and over 200 images, including archival photos of productions and Gorey’s never‐before‐published sketches and finished illustrations of sets, costumes, props, posters, and more. About the Speaker Carol Verburg is an editor and writer. She collaborated with Edward Gorey on more than twenty theater productions on Cape Cod, and she is the author of the Edgar Rowdey mystery novels. She lives in San Francisco.
