The History of Witchcraft and Feminism with Dr Jennifer Farrell | Hen & Chicken
May 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Southville
The image of a female witch, with broom and black cat serving the devil, is ingrained in pop culture. But where did this stereotype come from?
The concept of witchcraft emerged slowly over the course of several centuries as a result of theological, intellectual, and cultural changes in ideas about demons and heresy.
Magical practices were varied - including love magic, healing, and various forms of prognostication. And it certainly wasn’t always associated with women. In fact, more ‘sinister’ magic like necromancy - which relied heavily on the power of demons - was mostly done by men. This type of magic involved a lot of education that simply wasn’t accessible to women at the time. So how come this image of evil women practising magic - witches - came about?
This talk will use feminist approaches to the past to explore medieval changes in ideas about magic, gender, and heresy in order to better understand the emergence of witchcraft at the end of the middle ages. We will also look at witchcraft in relation to female sexuality and fears about women’s access to ritual power throughout history.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

Dr Jennifer Farrell is a lecturer in medieval history at the University of Exeter. With interests in both gender and the medieval supernatural, her research and teaching focuses on cultural developments and their relationship to socio-political changes in Western Europe during the high and late middle ages (c. 1000- c. 1500). She has published on subjects including medieval prophecy; fairies in medieval history and romance; the relationship between literary representations of fairies, the supernatural, and gender; and is currently working on a book focused on Geoffrey of Monmouth and the origins of the Arthurian legends. Her teaching has included undergraduate and postgraduate courses looking at medieval gender and sexuality, universities and learning in the middle ages, magic in the middle ages, sexualities across time and space, and the legends of King Arthur.

A message from our Chef Jaufferkhan:
“Jaufferkhan means open-minded. I’m from Sri Lanka, an island known as the Pearl of Asia. I love my country, it is like paradise.
I fondly remember picking fresh mango and guava. My passion for cooking began at age 10, helping my mum clean okra and learning to haggle in the fish markets with my dad. My father was a teacher and provided for our family and his four sisters. My mother was the oldest daughter in her family, so everyone would eat at our home. She was very generous and always cooked extra for those in need.
Sadly, because of the civil war in Sri Lanka, my family had to move to Bahrain, There I worked in the welfare department of an Islamic NGO, but I was also able to use my cooking skills and I cooked for events for the Youth Group. My wife is also a very good cook and our dream is to open a restaurant. I’m very proud of my parents, they taught me to be generous, so I am excited to share my recipes, perfected over 40 years.”

A message from our Chef Ali:
“Hi, my name is Ali and I come from Kurdistan, Iraq. I grew up in a beautiful city called Sulaymaniyah. I was studying Geography at university, but in 2017 I needed to leave because it was dangerous for me to stay. When I came to Bristol in 2020 I felt relief because the people were so friendly and supportive.
I learnt to cook from my grandmother and stepmother when I was 15. They said you must look after yourself when you are at University. I discovered I loved cooking. The first things I cooked were rice and aubergine stew to go with lamb.
When I lived in Manchester with 4 friends, I did all the cooking. In Bristol I worked in a Kurdish restaurant in Old Market.
I love sharing my recipes from my country with people from different countries. Kurdish cuisine uses a lot of fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. It is very tasty but not too spicy. So I am excited to have joined Migrateful and can’t wait to share my story and culture.”

Kate McNab & Kim Hicks @ Bristol 1904 Arts | The Red Lodge Museum
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+0)
Bristol
This well loved dynamic duo of Kate McNab and Kim Hicks are putting on a theatrical show at Bristol 1904 Arts that vignettes an array of the many characters from their hugely popular touring productions. Both hail from a past in the Bristol Old Vic. They tell tales and recreate scenes from a bygone era. As a flavour of what to expect, here is an extract from the Axbridge Theatre Review July 2024:
Kate McNab and Kim Hicks create an evening of cosy nostalgia in Beryl’s Day Out set in a very different Bristol Zoo of 1962. A full house enjoyed Kate McNab and Kim Hicks’ series of anecdotes, sketches and jokes from that year which many in the audience like me could remember while others simply lapped up the nostalgia. Written by Kate McNab and Paul Crossthwaite the two hander takes real memories and stories from the time as its basis with Beryl’s circular tour of the Zoological Gardens in Clifton as the narrative structure. We hear from a variety of characters including Sister O’Blimey with her lavatorial notes, the zookeeper mucking out the animals, the Great Mephlsto (I think that was his name) and Scarlet O’Mara vying for a slot on TV’s Animal Magic, and the urban myth about the dodgy carpark attendant on the Downs who wasn’t employed by anyone but pocketed all those florins as visitors parked their Zephyr Zodiacs and Austin A30s. Kate McNab played the titular role of Beryl complete with an unfeasibly lavish black beehive wig while Kim Hicks filled in most of the supporting cast with quick costume changes. There was so many stories and jokes, but the highlights were the songs – The Sunny Side of the Street, Never Smile at a Crocodile, I Only Have Eyes for You and What A Difference A Day Makes. With Kate’s rich dark vocals like a coffee desert from a box of Good News chocolates, her sense of timing and movement on stage, she remains a class act with a string of theatrical hits behind her with Bristol’s Ministry of Entertainment company. Versatile is the best word to describe Kim as at times I thought there was a third actor as her commitment to each new character created such contrast to the last. This is one show you will enjoy … for one night only at Bristol 1904 Arts. Don't miss it !!! This event is open to both club members and the public but we are a small intimate venue - just 110 seats - so tickets are a first come, first served basis. This theatrical event will take place in our iconic Performance Hall within the Red Lodge, Park Row BS1 5LJ. Open to club members and the public. Doors Open: Through the Knot Garden (in Lodge Street) from 7:00pm on Friday, 9th May, 2025. Performance starts: 7:30 pm with one interval Dress code: Smart Casual Bar: Serving beers, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks TICKETS: Members: £12 per person. Non-Members £15 per person. It is untouchable when it comes to shoulder health, thanks to its ergonomic perfection. The military press comes equipped with the “Rite of Passage” type programming—possibly the most reliable progression ever. Three versions of the ROP—“Jurassic,” “907 Hypertrophy,” and “Heavy”—will keep you gaining for a long time. Kettlebell 201 ROP sets high goals—and gives you the skills and the roadmap to reach them. Do you have what it takes? Sign up and power to you!

Email all registration and other questions to claire@bodyology.co.uk Registration Cancellation by Participant: Registration fees are non-refundable. No refunds will be granted. Registrants may transfer their registration to another person for no fee. Barbell 201: Stand StrongBarbell 201 is old school at its best: the Military Press and the Zercher Squat. The Military Press is a classic that ought to be treated right. Others will show you how to press strict and weak—or how to put up a lot of weight sloppily. We press strict and strong, the way Soviet weightlifters did in the early 1960s. The Zercher Squat is the ultimate “squat for the people!” Simple technique. No strain on the wrists, shoulders, or elbows. No need for a rack or a spotter. A great carryover to sports and other lifts. As a bonus, an unbelievable training effect on the abs. The two lifts come fully loaded with the “Russian Countdown” cycle to make your strength skyrocket. Sign up and power to you!
