Magnificence And Grandeur Immersive Experience of Grotto Art | National Museum of China
ENDED
Beijing
"Colorful World - Immersive Experience of Grotto Art" is officially open to the public on the third-floor platform and corridor on the north side of the National Museum of China.
The exhibition space for this immersive experience is about 1,500 square meters. The giant digital installation is designed with a blooming lotus as the main body. The artists combine digital painting, digital 3D Mapping images and AI algorithm technology to express, explore and interpret the artistic style and rich connotations of Kizil Grottoes, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Maijishan Grottoes, Yungang Grottoes and Longmen Grottoes with contemporary vision and unique perspectives. The "Rhombus World", "Eternal Pearl", "Oriental Smile", "Ten Directions of the Same Origin" and "Strange and Wonderful Realm" form the "Art Space-Time Experience Area", and there are also "Teaching Interactive Experience Area" and "Derivative Artwork Area", which together form a panoramic immersive experience environment, and the grotto art is given a new interpretation.
The giant digital installation and the fully sensory interactive exhibition are a highlight of this experience, which opens up a new perspective for the analysis and appreciation of cave art, and also subverts the basic mode of traditional immovable cultural relics display in terms of technology and perception. Many cave art scenes have been refined and catalyzed by contemporary aesthetic concepts, some solemn and sacred, some magnificent and graceful, and gathered together across time and space. These imaginative digital art re-creations convey the aesthetic pursuit, value concept and cultural spirit carried by ancient Chinese cave art, allowing cultural heritage to continue with new artistic language based on the original creation, and radiate new vitality in the changes of the times.
Grotto temples are an important part of my country's ancient cultural heritage and a shining pearl in the long history of Chinese civilization. They have unique historical, artistic and scientific values: "Cultural relics and cultural heritage carry the genes and blood of the Chinese nation and are non-renewable and irreplaceable resources of China's excellent civilization. We must bring more cultural relics and cultural heritage to life and create a strong social atmosphere for inheriting Chinese civilization." The National Museum of China has always attached great importance to the protection, inheritance, display and promotion of China's excellent cultural heritage, and actively explored new ways and new carriers for the revitalization and utilization of cultural relics. I sincerely hope that this immersive experience will promote the further improvement of the display and utilization level of grotto temples, promote the creative transformation and innovative development of China's excellent traditional culture, continuously enhance cultural awareness, strengthen cultural confidence, promote exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, and make new and greater contributions to building a cultural power and building a modern civilization of the Chinese nation.
Another Tongue of Mine | Beijing
Nov 23, 2024–Mar 31, 2025 (UTC+8)
Beijing
The group exhibition Another Tongue of Mine presents a series of paintings and video works by Li Ran, Liu Xiaodong, Laure Prouvost, Wael Shawky, and Shen Xin, exploring how the symbols and systems of language fundamentally shape our perception of the world, creating endless transformations in speaking, translating, listening, contemplation or even silence.
The exhibition derives its title from a prose of the same title by Chinese writer Wang Meng, where he recounts his experience of learning Uyghur in Xinjiang during the 1960s. Wang regards language as a medium that bridges narratives and understanding between oneself and others. Through narration, learning, and listening, the image of the other is constructed, outlining the boundaries or touching upon the possibility of coexistence. Language is not a neutral, objective vessel; once filtered through it, consciousness and beliefs shadow every linguistic act and narrative. The similarities and differences in language flow and intersect between individuals, groups, and cultures, forming new constructs of discourse and power. In this presentation, the artists navigate between practices of painting and video, seeking medium specificity while crafting an intertextual system that achieves poetic resonance across forms and texts.
Li Ran presents Life fo the Pilgrim (2017), a video that weaves together archival photos, including images of Xinjiang Construction Corps’ production practices in May Day pasture and news photography. Through a semi-fictional narrative, Li explores his perspective on history, which he describes as complex and shattered, from both third-person and first-person viewpoints. Alongside are four paintings created between 2023 and 2024, an extension of the artist’s 2023 solo exhibition Waiting for the Advent at Lisson London. These paintings, with symbolic motifs and satirical undertones, explore the themes prevalent in Li's work. Evoking the style of satirical cartoons, You People Are So Political (2023) prompts viewers to contemplate the omnipresence of politics; while Repeated Forward (2023) draws its title from Søren Kierkegaard's Repetition, where two figures breaking out from confinement are astonished by what they are confronted with – a form of modernism that somehow has been pre-determined.
