Using nettles, bramble and other plants collected on site you will learn how to gather, extract and process fibre from the different plants. You will learn how to twist the fibres into cordage (string), and we’ll look at some examples of the structures this cordage could then go on to become. Alice will bring along samples of a range of wild fibres and we will talk about times to gather, process, and store a variety of plants. Much of the workshop will be spent outside, whatever the weather. The focus of the workshop is on gathering and processing fibre and aims to open our eyes to the usable fibres that are commonly available to us. Artist bio: Sustainability is at the heart of Alice’s practice. The desire to take an ethical approach has driven a shift within her practice from using conventional art and textile materials into exploring found objects, gathered materials and natural processes. Using her textiles skill set and techniques borrowed from basketry, she makes one-off surfaces and structures with the materials she finds, gathers and grows. Alice studied Textiles in Bradford followed by an MA in Creative Practice. Regularly teaching workshops and exhibiting widely, she is also a member of the Textile Study Group. Alice is published by Batsford (Natural Processes in Textile Art and Wild Textiles) and has a number of self-published titles. Alice’s approach to teaching is very much based on sharing her own experience and encouraging students to find ways of using techniques appropriately in their own work. This one day class will guide you through creating your own linocut design from carving to completion!This is a low pressure class; there will be plenty of time to work through a simple design. INSTRUCTOR:Natalie Ley of Snake Bite Creations PROJECT: Students will create a linocut print up to 4 x6 ; learning how to carve a block and using ink to print it by hand. At the end of class, you will go home with your block and paper prints. INCLUDED: All materials are included; a lino block, carving tools, ink, rollers, and paper. PREREQUISITE: None! No experience is required. PLEASE BRING: Carving: Please come with a design in mind. Students will have the option of either drawing their design directly on the block (freehand) or sending me a PDF beforehand so it can be printed and transferred onto the block before class. Join author Carol Verburg in conversation on her latest book, The Theatrical Adventures of Edward Gorey: Rare Drawings, Scripts, and Stories. Edward Gorey (1925–2000) was a prodigious and original artist, beloved for his instantly recognizable style. But what many fans don’t know is that Edward Gorey was also a prolific theater artist. Edward Gorey’s designs for the Tony Award–winning Broadway production of Dracula were brilliantly inventive, and he devoted the last decade of his life to writing, designing, directing, and producing original theatrical works, from major productions to dozens of wildly creative “entertainments” on Cape Cod. Written by Edward Gorey’s friend and theater collaborator Carol Verburg, this deluxe hardcover volume showcases Gorey's abundant body of theatrical work, giving it the lavish, full‐color treatment it deserves. The book is filled with Gorey’s own scripts, behind‐the‐scenes anecdotes from collaborators, and over 200 images, including archival photos of productions and Gorey’s never‐before‐published sketches and finished illustrations of sets, costumes, props, posters, and more.
