Cultivating Justice: Modelling Settler Support for Reconciliation in Canada | Dr. Alvin Woods Building, WLU Waterloo Campus

Cultivating Justice: Modelling Settler Support for Reconciliation in Canada | Dr. Alvin Woods Building, WLU Waterloo Campus

Sep 30, 2025 (UTC-4)
Waterloo
Conferences
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s final report marked a new moment in national consciousness: a recognition of Indigenous histories, an awareness of the injustices committed by Settlers and their governments, and an understanding of the need for redress and the restoration of rights. At the time, Settler populations largely voiced support for these recommendations and committed to a more just future; in the years since, words have eclipsed actions. Andrew Basso and Andrea Perrella mobilize four years of survey research to understand why Reconciliation has stalled. They draw from one of the largest databases of Settler attitudes to explain support for – and resistance to – what they term “Reconciliaction”: real change that fosters individual and community success while remedying past and ongoing harms. They identify and analyze key stages preceding action on the part of Settlers: denial, recognition, sympathy, and empathy. These variables are measured against public opinion to offer a solid empirical foundation for effecting sociopolitical change and moving Reconciliation forward. Information Source: eventbrite

We are very excited to collaborate with Afrim Pristine from the Cheese Boutique for this fun event in Bloom! Afrim Pristine is Canada’s premier Cheese Master and co-owner of Toronto’s iconic Cheese Boutique, a family-run institution for over 50 years. With more than 25 years in the business, Afrim has dedicated his life to mastering cheese, earning the rare title of Maître Fromager from the France-based Guilde Internationale des Fromagers—making him the youngest recipient and the only Canadian to receive this honour. Afrim’s passion, rooted in his family legacy, has made him a national culinary figure. He’s the host of Cheese: A Love Story, Food Network Canada’s first cheese-focused docu-series (also on Hulu), where he travels the world in search of the best cheeses and the artisans behind them. His bestselling cookbook, For the Love of Cheese, celebrates his favourite ingredient, with a second book on the way, hitting shelves in October 2026. Beyond cheese, Afrim is a skilled chef, recipe developer, and TV personality, regularly featured on Canadian food shows and morning programs including 10 seasons on Marilyn Denis. Recognized by The Globe and Mail and LCBO Food & Drink as one of Canada’s most influential food figures, Afrim continues to inspire a new generation of cheese lovers while honouring the traditions that shaped him. In regards to the inspiration for his menu, Afrim said "I'm excited about this menu as I get to showcase the 2 cuisines I love the most. For the first 2 courses, its about my deep southern Italian roots. A fall inspired burrata dish and my mother's recipe for her pasta e ceci. Mediterranean food for me is about the quality of the ingredients in each dish. I've taken that and put a slight modern spin to make it my own. The 3rd and 4th course is celebrating amazing Canadian bounty. I'm showcasing Canada's best cheeses. Led by critic, writer and WORD Christchurch Programme Director Kiran Dass, hear our panelists talk about creating the utopias they wish to live in. Like Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage, each of our panelists have created beauty and innovation in unlikely places. In the shadow of an abandoned nuclear power plant, Jarman turned Prospect Cottage into a place of refuge and creativity. Our panelists – artist and writer Sam Duckor-Jones, writer and community activator Helen Lehndorf, and playwright, producer and director Hone Kouka – have each seen a barren space and filled it with something gratifying. Trained in Japanese ceramic styles, Aaron Scythe will lead the workshop, giving tips and tricks on how you can create special take home pieces. Over a brew or two, spend some time learning how Scythe creates his distinctive artworks. This workshop is presented in connection with Whenua Whatu: Māori Ceramics from The Dowse Collection, on at The Dowse until March 2. *Firing not included Aaron Scythe From the late 1990s Scythe lived and worked as a ceramic artist in Japan studying under master craftsperson Professor Koie Ryoji and establishing his own studio and kiln. In 2011 he moved back to Aotearoa with his family following the earthquake and nuclear reactor meltdown at Ōkuma, Fukushima, just north of their home in Mashiko. After a period in the Waikato, Scythe relocated to Wanganui setting up a studio and workshop where he is currently based. While in Japan Scythe was heavily influenced by the Momoyama period (1568-1715) which saw the rise in popularity of the tea ceremony, and the creation and evolution of the many vessels associated with it. This particular work brings together a number of different influences in relation to the construction, firing and decoration of tsubo (traditional vase forms). Yobitsugi (to invite connection) is a technique where multiple vessels are intentionally broken, and the pieces are combined to create a unique new object. In this work, Scythe has employed this technique, alongside his distinctive illustrations, to reflect the relationships he has to both Aotearoa and Japan.
