In 1845, Daniel and Alexander Macmillan took possession of the bookshop at 1 Trinity Street, Cambridge, from which they would launch a publishing powerhouse. This February, 180 years later, they will be back there again to mark the launch in paperback of Literature for the People, the book that tells their story... From an impoverished childhood in the Scottish highlands to Victorian London, this is the inspiring story of two brothers – Daniel and Alexander Macmillan – who built a publishing empire - and broughtAlice in Wonderlandto the world. Their remarkable achievements are revealed in this entertaining, superbly researched biography. Daniel and Alexander arrived in London in the 1830s at a crucial moment of social change. These two idealistic brothers, working-class sons of a Scottish crofter, went on to set up a publishing house that spread radical ideas on equality, science and education across the world. They also brought authors like Lewis Carroll, Thomas Hardy and Charles Kingsley, and poets like Matthew Arnold and Christina Rossetti, to a mass audience. No longer would books be just for the upper classes. In Literature for the People Sarah Harkness brings to life these two warm-hearted men. Daniel was driven by the knowledge that he was living on borrowed time, his body ravaged by tuberculosis. Alexander took on responsibility for the company as well as Daniel’s family and turned a small business into an international powerhouse. He cultivated the literary greats of the time, weathered controversy and tragedy, and fostered a dynasty that would include future prime minister Harold Macmillan. Including fascinating insights about the great, the good and the sometimes wayward writers of the Victorian era, with feuds, friendships and passionate debate, this vibrant book is bursting with all the energy of that exciting period in history. Harkness is the best kind of biographer: meticulous, insightful and a great storyteller. This tale of two lives in all their messy reality is so much more enjoyable than any dry or self-promoting publishing history, while at the same time its rich historical, social and intellectual context makes this essential reading for anyone interested in the Victorians.Ophelia Field, author ofThe Kit-Kat ClubandThe Favourite Accessibility Information Seating is available for 40 attendees (maximum) plus standing space. How, when and why did the concept of ‘The West’ as a ‘civilisation’, a ‘culture’, an entity with a corresponding set of thoughts, values and practices, emerge? Quinn argues in this book that the answer isn’t that it was a linear progression from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, with those great classical civilisations bequeathing their sophisticated characteristics to future civilisations. In fact, Quinn puts forward the evidence that there were a great many other societies which contributed to the inheritances that make up ‘The West’. Moreover, she argues that connections rather than civilisations are what led to what we now think of as The West. She writes: “Civilisations are such a familiar way to see the world today that can seem like natural facts, a universal model for the organisation of human society. They are in fact a relatively recent European invention , part of a phenomenon I call ‘civilisational thinking’”. The metaphor we are encouraged to think about here is not so much a tree of knowledge with those two famous Mediterranean societies forming the trunk, but a trellis of interconnected stories, inventions, concepts – all intertwining as human history goes on. We are delighted to be hosting the new Cambridge Professor of Ancient History, Josephine Quinn, to talk about her book 'How the World Made the West' on the 20th of February. Join us from 6pm for an enlightening evening of global networks and intellectual exchange. Information Source: Heffers Bookshop | eventbrite

When a team of Victorian archaeologists dug into a grassy hill in Iraq, they chanced upon one of the oldest and greatest stores of knowledge ever seen: the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal, seventh century BCE ruler of a huge swathe of the ancient Middle East known as Mesopotamia. After his death, vengeful rivals burned Ashurbanipal’s library to the ground - yet the texts, carved on clay tablets, were baked and preserved by the heat. Buried for millennia, the tablets were written in cuneiform: the first written language in the world. More than half of human history is written in cuneiform, but only a few hundred people on earth can read it. In this captivating new book, Assyriologist Selena Wisnom takes us on an immersive tour of this extraordinary library, bringing ancient Mesopotamia and its people to life. Through it, we encounter a world of astonishing richness, complexity and sophistication. Mesopotamia, she shows, was home to advanced mathematics, astronomy and banking, law and literature. This was a culture absorbed and developed by the ancient Greeks, and whose myths were precursors to Bible stories - in short, a culture without which our lives today would be unrecognizable. We are delighted to welcome Selena Wisnom, in conversation with Josephine Quinn, to Heffers on the 11th of March to discuss this fantastic new work. Information Source: Heffers Bookshop | eventbrite

Fanny Price, in Mansfield Park, tells her persistent suitor that 'we have all a better guide in ourselves...than any other person can be'. Sometimes, however, we crave external guidance: and when this happens we could do worse than seek it in Jane Austen's own subtle novels. Written to coincide with Austen's 250th birthday, this approachable and intimate work shows why and how - for over half a century - Austen has inspired and challenged its author through different phases of her life. Part personal memoir, part expert interaction with all the letters, manuscripts and published novels, Janet Todd's book reveals what living with Jane Austen has meant to her and what it might also mean to others. Todd celebrates the undimmable power of Austen's work to help us understand our own bodies and our environment, and teach us about patience, humour, beauty and the meaning of home. 'Intimate, knowledgeable and frequently unexpected, this is a book for all Jane Austen's readers by one of the very best of those readers.'Richard Cronin, Emeritus Professor of English Literature, University of Glasgow 'Sharing a mind is as exciting as sharing a bed. In this gentle, witty, semi-memoir, Janet Todd reveals her eccentric encounters with books and shows us why the novels of Jane Austen should matter to all of us now.'Miriam Margolyes 'Jan Todd invents a new genre, part memoir, part literary criticism, to tell the captivating story of a life of reading. Benefiting from extensive study of Jane Austen and her world, Janet Todd shows us how to live with Austen's novels, to read them and reread them and weave them into the texture of our lives. Witty and inviting, this book offers both a fresh perspective on Austen and a moving record of the struggles of feminist scholarship in the academy.'Maud Ellmann, author of The Nets of Modernism: Henry James, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Sigmund Freud Accessibility Information There will be a small amount of seating available plus standing space. Some views may be partially obstructed by architectural columns, bookshelves, etc. but we aim to minimise this where possible. Space will be made available for wheelchair users.
