Art und Weise: A Manifesto for Moist Futures | Goethe-Institut New York
Feb 21, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Moist Futures: Cripto Sirena Chronicles is a performative encounter that blurs the lines between artist talk, poetry, drag, and collective body activations. Drawing inspiration from the collaborative sci-fi fable Cripto Sirenas, the event invites the audience to immerse themselves in a speculative world where fluidity, interconnectedness, and resistance reshape the narrative of extractivist technology and Web-3 ecology.
The evening will open with a poetry reading by Lucy Tomasino in Spanish, weaving a tale of ecofeminist resilience, through selected texts. Alongside body activation Sunny Pfalzer guides the audience through the evening, exploring the interconnectedness of body, voice, and world, syncing into a collective resonance and activating the body as technology. As the audience dives deeper into the Cripto Sirenas fable through a reading by Anna Ehrenstein, Alexa Evangelista, joins virtually in drag in her role as the crypto bailarina, embodying a multifaceted humanoid savior whose fluidity and transformation defy the rigid binaries of tech-totalitarian rule.
The evening concludes with a short reading of Josh Davilas, the 5th collaborator and author of “Blockchain Radicals - How Capitalism ruined Crypto and how to fix it” and a conversation and q&a with the artists on somatic, research based artistic collaboration.

I can not say enough about how authentically genuine she is. She knows her vision and she stays true to herself while creating that vision. I loved absorbing the immense amount of knowledge she had to offer, and I was in awe just learning from this incredibly talented individual. She inspired me to dig deep and to CREATE from my own brain more often. So many times, we get pictures of someone else’s work. That can be disheartening. So she encouraged us to create and share things that WE want to be sharing with the world. I am blown away by the connection she shares with her partner in crime and makeup artist who helps bring the vision to life, Keith. They were an unforgettable duo, and I learned beyond what my mind could comprehend. So excuse me while I wrap my brain around the intense knowledge overload. Louis @louisspagnuolo The title of the class doesn’t lie!! Inspired is an understatement. I took this class with my hair bestie and honestly it didn’t even feel like a class. It felt like an honest conversation between like minded individuals who all have the same passion and drive! I was excited and engaged the entire class. All thanks to Meaghan!! Her story, mind and creative process is something different from anything I’ve seen in the industry and I HIGHLY recommend this class for everyone! (will be taking any/every class she offers)😘 Justin @themanemood Inspired is an understatement….. Meaghans class was nothing short of unique, from start to finish. If you dont know her, she is the most passionate, driven woman ive ever met. Bringing together a team of amazing people and delivering a 1 of a kind experience. Designing her class around community, we need eachother to truly create magic! She was vulnerable, down to earth, and loved what she taught to her core! Truly a force to be reckoned with, Meaghan and her team nailed this one for sure. I left feeling my fire was reignited! Briana @brihairdesigns Let’s face it, sometimes the beauty industry can be full of gatekeeping and bad attitudes. Ms. Meaghan Masterson is truly breath of fresh air. The content she brings to the table in her Inspiration into Creation class is nothing short of iconic. From her personal experiences, to content creation this course was exactly what I needed as a stylist of 10 years in the industry. After taking this course not only once but twice I’m now creating content and literal art that I am so proud of! I’m a firm believer that any stylist can benefit from this course, even if rainbow wigs aren’t your thing! Serena @serena_created I had the opportunity the take Meaghan’s class twice now, and let me tell you I would take it again! Not only are you seeing into her creative process but your learning how relatable and just genuine she is! Building her own way through the industry is inspiring and i don’t know about everyone else but I left instantly wanting to unleash my creativity! Each time I picked up something new, and the support she gives to everyone is contagious and what we need more of in the industry 🩷 I would highly recommend taking her class!!

Jones is the Founder and Executive Director of The Harlem Swing Dance Society, the premiere Harlem non profit organization with the purpose of promoting, preserving and protecting the Lindy Hop dance and various forms of Swing Dance culture in its Harlem birthplace. The mission is to see the Harlem area once again embrace their signature cultural dance and energize community youth to be future innovators of this historic art form. While the Savoy Ballroom closed in 1958, a new Lindy Hop foundation was born with Mama Lu Parks and her dance troupes. Under her direction Harlem youth made history and brought future attention to Lindy Hop by lessons, performances and dance contests. For close to 30 years they traveled and hopped the globe as one of the longest running jazz dance groups. This hidden history will be brought back to life with film, artifacts and experiences from her dancers. For more than 10 years, The Dance Historian Is In at the Library for the Performing Arts has highlighted a diverse range of dancers and choreographers across history. This series began when archivist and historian David Vaughan started volunteering at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Vaughan began a monthly program showing his favorite dance films from the Division's extensive collection, through which he unearthed many treasures, and helped acquire even more. Vaughan continued the series until the end of his life. Today, we honor his memory and work by inviting dance historians from all over the world each month to carry on the tradition of highlighting dance history through the Dance Division's moving image collection. Public Art Fund Talk: Edra Soto with Carla Acevedo-Yates & Marcela Guerrero | Frederick P. Rose Auditorium
Feb 26, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Artist Edra Soto will be joined by Carla Acevedo-Yates, Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Marcela Guerrero, DeMartini Family Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art; and Melanie Kress, Senior Curator, Public Art Fund for a conversation hosted on the occasion of Graft, Soto’s first large-scale public art exhibition in New York City.
The discussion will delve into the themes of architecture and belonging explored in Soto’s Public Art Fund commission, which, like many of her sculptures and installations, draws from the rejas—patterned wrought iron gates—found in post-war Puerto Rican architecture. In consideration of Soto’s longtime explorations of the built environment, the artist and curators will discuss ways that Soto’s sculptures and installations have been presented and interpreted both in private museums and the public realm. The talk will examine how her decade-long project Graft engages with ideas of cultural memory, Afro-Caribbean heritage, and the complex feelings of both connection and dislocation that accompany migration. This event offers an opportunity to reflect on how art can create spaces for community and dialogue within the urban landscape of New York City.
Soto’s work GRAFT (2022) was presented in the exhibition no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria (2022–2023) curated by Guerrero at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Graft (2023) was featured in the exhibition entre horizontes: Art and Activism Between Chicago and Puerto Rico (2023–2024), curated by Acevedo-Yates at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

What You Make of Me by Sophie Madeline Dess with Carrigan Miller | Rizzoli Bookstore
Feb 26, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
In this mesmerizing debut from a bright new talent, two enigmatic and unforgettable siblings confront what—and who—they’re willing to sacrifice for their art. In conversation with Carrigan Miller, editor-in-chief of KGB Lit, followed by a signing. PLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Can't attend?Order your signed copy(please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout). “Sophie Madeline Dess has conjured one of the most unique and heartbreaking family narratives in recent memory, and with her rendering of the dynamic between Ava and Demetri, she’s given us a sibling duo for the ages.” — Sam Lipsyte,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe AskandNo One Left to Come Looking for You
On the eve of her first solo show, Ava is feeling defiant. The art gallery acolytes have insisted on writing “explanations” of her paintings for an accompanying catalog, but what do they know of her work? What do they know of her brother, Demetri, whose face echoes across every canvas?
After all, Ava and Demetri have only ever had each other. Abandoned first by their mother, who drowned in the Long Island Sound, and then again by their father, who couldn’t see beyond his grief, each sibling has always been the other’s most ardent supporter: Demetri encouraged Ava’s raw talent as a painter, while Ava pushed Demetri to pursue filmmaking. But as they make their way in New York, the codependency that once sustained them soon threatens to be their undoing. Betrayals mount, fueled by Ava’s reckless acts and her disdain for Demetri’s last-ditch efforts to make something of consequence, but what ultimately and irreversibly tips the scales won’t be found on canvas or film. Because now, at thirty-one, Demetri is dying.
As Ava reckons with the meaning of her portraits, what soon emerges from her intimate, offhanded, and mischievous meditations is a stunning and unsettling confession of secrets, epiphanies, rivalry, and infidelity. Vaulting between childhood and the days leading up to Demetri’s death, here is a searing portrait of two remarkable siblings reckoning with the limits of loyalty. Heralding the arrival of an impressive new talent, What You Make of Me lays bare the thin line between success and sacrifice. Sophie Madeline Dess is a writer and critic living in New York, New York. Her short fiction and essays can be found in The Paris Review, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New Republic, The Drift and elsewhere. She has lectured on literature and art at Columbia University and Parsons School of Design. What You Make of Me is her debut novel. Carrigan Miller is a writer and critic living in Manhattan. He is the editor of KGB Bar Lit and tends bar in the Red Room.
