Dimensions of Sound - Musical Journey Through Space and Time | New York

Jan 1, 2022–Dec 31, 2030 (UTC-5)
New York
Exhibitions
DIMENSIONS OF SOUND - MUSICAL JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE AND TIME “The ear lies nearest to the human soul.” (Johann Gottfried Herder, „Kritische Wälder”, 1769 ) The House of Music, Hungary is a tree of life in the heart of Városliget, with a trunk, and a crown of golden leaves on slender branches. We are standing here by its roots, which provide the institution with its spiritual sustenance. The roots are entwined, like a labyrinth, and we walk among them. Our journey begins far back in time and space, back at the birth of music itself where we can grasp the roots of Hungarian folk music and European music. Progressing through the centuries, we will follow the development of music, discovering what a series of organised tones has meant to mankind, with the emphasis on Hungarians in the light—or sometimes the shadow—of Europe. Through the language of music, the exhibition speaks for itself: Everywhere we go, we hear music playing; the subject of the exhibition is music itself. Quoting Shakespeare, we might say, “Mark the music!” Mark not only the music coming from the headphones, but also the music around and within you. When you reach the end of the path, the modern day, many sounds will have been etched into your heart and mind: music to take home with you, the music of ancient times.

Designer’s Choice Norman Teague— Jam Sessions | The Museum of Modern Art

Nov 1, 2024–May 11, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Exhibitions
What belongs in a museum, and who decides? How can we be more democratic in defining value? As a leading arbiter of taste, style, and form, The Museum of Modern Art played an instrumental role in shaping the history of modern design. Norman Teague invites us to reimagine the past by moving beyond "good modern design" as defined by institutions like MoMA. Drawing inspiration from artists and designers traditionally excluded from museums, and assisted by generative AI, he offers a reinterpretation of design history. These reimaginings—posters and full-scale prototypes shown alongside objects from MoMA’s collection—foreground makers of color and embody the cooperative, inventive spirit that guides Norman Teague Design Studios. Teague balances reverence for design innovation with an acknowledgment of the power dynamics that shaped it. With the rise of AI forcing a wholesale reevaluation of human creativity, he reminds us of the creative potential of inviting a diversity of voices into the chorus. As in a musical jam session, collaboration, respect, and improvisation bring us back to the question that sparks every act of imagination—the what if—inviting us to contemplate both the past and the future as realms of boundless possibility.

Projects: Marlon Mullen | The Museum of Modern Art

Dec 14, 2024–Apr 20, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Exhibitions
There is no mistaking the work of Marlon Mullen. His distinctive paintings, with their lush surfaces and bold color, extend the long-standing tradition of making art about art. For nearly 40 years, Mullen has been based at the NIAD Art Center, a progressive arts studio for artists with developmental disabilities in his native Richmond, California. Donated issues of art publications, such as Art in America and Artforum, serve as his primary subject matter. Projects: Marlon Mullen presents a selection of the artist’s paintings from the past decade. Upon selecting a glossy cover or an interior page as a point of departure, Mullen paints using acrylic on canvas, flat on a table. He maintains visual ties to his source material, while also radically transforming it. The resulting compositions reimagine the relationships among their parts. Barcodes and other details may zoom into prominence. Letters, numbers, punctuation, and the spacing between them may disappear or repeat. Imagery and graphics all become pure form to be reordered and reshaped. As this exhibition demonstrates, Mullen views magazines and art books not only as a prompt to create, but also as an invitation to engage with today’s art world on his own painterly terms.

Dora Jeridi &Pieter Vermeersch&Mathilde Denize | PERROTIN NEW YORK

Jan 11–Feb 19, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Exhibitions
Perrotin New York is pleased to present Dora Jeridi’s new exhibition, Humanity, marking the artist’s first collaboration with Perrotin. Jeridi’s characters are both universal and deeply personal. In this new body of work, the artist captures the ambiguity between fragility and strength, restlessness and expressions of power, inviting us to consider what defines our humanity. Rather than offering definitive answers, Jeridi encourages us to linger in uncertainty, exploring those spaces that are both meaningful and elusive. Perrotin New York is pleased to present Pieter Vermeersch, returning to the gallery for his first solo exhibition in five years. Vermeersch often works through large-scale spatial interventions, creating immersive environments that interact with the exhibition space. This new exhibition continues his ongoing exploration of materiality, time, space, and color, combining gradient painting on canvas, semi-precious materials, and screen printing techniques. Perrotin New York is pleased to present “The Voice of Form,” a solo exhibition by French artist Mathilde Denize. Working across the disciplines of painting, installation, sculpture, performance, and video, Mathilde Denize’s artistic process emphasizes continuity between seemingly fragmented or unrelated forms. Her work is often based on found objects, and inspired by her time as a set designer, Denize often uses leftover paint from film sets as the basis for her paintings. Her work embodies processes of fragmentation and translation, with Denize often cutting up her previous paintings into pieces and then reassembling them into new sculptural constructions. Her work often features human-like forms, combining issues of gendered and sexualized bodies with the act of creation.
