Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop
Jan 8, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. The January 5am Club is on the second Wednesday because the first falls on New Year's Day. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9.30am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. We've had to increase our prices in 2025 because of the increase in Eventbrite fees, the minimum wage and Employers National Insurance. Tickets now cost £10 (including VAT) BUT in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7.30am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry.

Paint your own Large Abstract Painting workshop in Brighton | Lawrence Art Studio
Jan 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. Date: Sunday 19th January Time: 10am till 4pm Venue: Lawrence Art Studio, 16 Kingsthorpe Rd, Brighton and Hove, Hove BN3 5HR Price: £250 (including all art materials + large canvas + lunch ) What’s included: 1 x Large Canvas (80x100cm or bigger, deep edge)Art Materials: acrylic paint, watercolours, spray paints, pastels, gesso and more… (you’re welcome to bring your own materials too)A selection of Brushes, texture & marking tools, apron and everything else you’ll need to create your one-of-the kind abstractLive group demonstration of abstract painting techniques and plenty of 1:1 guidanceProfessional Lawrence Art Studio Brighton and Hove Susex UKDelicious vegetarian lunchRefreshment: tea, coffee, biscuits & fruitsAll day event, places are limited to 10 participantsCan’t make this date? Rachel Stamp Acoustic | Daltons
Jan 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Bad Luck Live presents.. Rachel Stamp Acoustic live in Brighton for the first time since.. ever? David Ryder Prangley first met Will Crewdson in 1994 after moving from Dinas Powys in South Wales to London in search of musicians to bring to life an imaginary band called RACHEL STAMP. Instantly hitting it off over a shared love of artists such as Redd Kross, The Nymphs, Prince and Warren Zevon and filmmakers such as Lindsay Anderson, Russ Mayer and Kathryn Bigelow, the duo quickly hit the UK music scene (joined by synth player Shaheena Dax and drummer Robin Guy) with their unique and colourful brand of androgynous Glam Punk, releasing the albums HYMNS FOR STRANGE CHILDREN, STAMPAX and OCEANS OF VENUS and securing a following that would see them become the first unsigned band to sell out London’s legendary Astoria Theatre. In 2024 Will and David decided to take things back to their roots and started performing stripped down versions of RACHEL STAMP’s varied catalogue as a duo with David on vocals and acoustic guitar and Will on electric guitar and backing vocals. Their first show quickly sold out leading to more UK dates are being added. The gigs are all unique, with set lists evolving and stories behind the songs being shared. Be prepared for an intimate evening with one of the UK’s most individual and cherished bands. Live at Daltons, a fresh new venue on the sea front with step-free accessibility. This is a standing show. If you have access requirements, please make sure to purchase an ambulant or wheelchair ticket. Tickets £13, more on the door.

Opening Reception - A Realm for Reflection | 175 Washington St
Jan 26, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Brighton
Join us for the opening reception of A Realm for Reflection, a solo exhibit by Sebastian Gonzalez Quintero curated by Jessica Hernandez.
Curator's Statement:
In A Realm for Reflection, Sebastian Gonzalez Quintero contributes to broader conversations on climate change by examining specific sites of environmental transformation using digital media. Whether focusing on the bacterial makeup of the Charles River in Boston, the melting glaciers of the Tolima volcano in Colombia, or rising sea levels around coastal cities, Quintero’s body of work calls attention to dramatic shifts in topography and worrisome variations in climate. Yet in addition to highlighting various transnational environmental concerns, Quintero finds ways to more closely involve the viewer, and himself, in the work – going beyond simply identifying our role in manufacturing the crisis, and instead facilitating a closer engagement with the content, the digital media that articulates it, and the outdoor spaces that many of works were presented in initially. While the exhibit generally illustrates how visual art can add to existing climate discourses, it might also suggest that digital media is particularly equipped for this project. Using outdoor projections, performance, and interactive media, Quintero demonstrates the way the digital can communicate data-based markers of climate change as well as the more symbolic, affective, and speculative contours of these realities. And by incorporating these elements, Quintero produces work that is both informative and introspective – fostering experiences that within our current context of climate urgency, might force us to make that crucial link between feeling and tangible action. Artist's Biography:
Sebastian Gonzalez’s work focuses on climate change and environmental issues using moving image, video projection, interactive media, and site-specific interventions. He was raised in Bogotá, Colombia, where he earned a B.A. in psychology and a graduate certificate in photography at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Sebastian also holds an MFA in Film & Video from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where he taught as adjunct faculty for the Film/Video and Studio Foundation departments. He is currently a PhD student in Interdisciplinary Design and Media at Northeastern University. Featured Work: E-DUST (2023). --
UVA’s Overlook Gallery is located at 175 Washington St., Brighton, MA --inside of the large historically preserved church. The gallery is on the lower level of the building. There is an accessible ramp in the rear of the building and an elevator inside.
