Third Place Books welcomes Spencer Sunshine to our Seward Park store for a discussion of his book, Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism: The Origins and Afterlife of James Mason's Siege. A new wave of aspiring neo-Nazi terrorists has arisen. And they have a bible: James Mason’s Siege, which praises terrorism, serial killers, and Charles Manson. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism, based on years of archival work and interviews, documents for the first time the origins of Siege. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism . . .A new wave of aspiring neo-Nazi terrorists has arisen—including the infamous Atomwaffen Division. And they have a bible: James Mason’s Siege, which praises terrorism, serial killers, and Charles Manson. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism, based on years of archival work and interviews, documents for the first time the origins of Siege. First, it shows how Mason’s vision arose from debates by 1970s neo-Nazis who splintered off the American Nazi Party/National Socialist White People's Party and spun off a terrorist faction. Second, it unveils how four 1980s countercultural figures—musicians Boyd Rice and Michael Moynihan, Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey, and Satanist Nikolas Schreck—discovered, promoted, and published Mason. Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism explores a previously overlooked period and unearths the hidden connections between a countercultural clique and violent neo-Nazis—which together have set the template for today’s Neo-nazi terrorist underground. It is obligatory reading for those interested in contemporary terrorism, postwar countercultures, and the history of the U.S. Far Right and neo-Nazism. Spencer Sunshine (spencersunshine.com) has written about the Far Right for two decades, publishing on platforms like the Southern Poverty Law Center, Daily Beast, Truthout, and JTA. His latest book is Neo-Nazi Terrorism and Countercultural Fascism: The Origins and Afterlife of James Mason's Siege (Routledge, 2024). Fine Art
Join us for an in-gallery conversation between exhibiting artist Lucy Kim and Lucy Cotter, writer, curator, researcher, and author of Reclaiming Artistic Research. Surrounded by Kim’s large-scale sculptural prints, made from lab-grown melanin, featured in her exhibition Mutant Optics, this discussion explores art practice as a form of research. Together, the speakers will delve into how this approach shapes Kim’s process and work, while envisioning new possibilities for deeper collaborations between the arts and the sciences. The newly released second edition of Cotter’s Reclaiming Artistic Research contains dialogues with 24 artists on the topic of artmaking as a form of research and knowing. Reclaiming the term “artistic research” from its academic associations, these conversations foreground the material, spatial, and embodied ways of knowing specific to contemporary artistic inquiry. Copies will be available for purchase onsite during the program. About the Speakers Lucy Kim is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received the 2022 Creative Capital Award for her project printing images with bacteria that has been genetically modified to produce melanin. This mouthy, practical guide from activist, preacher, and Poor People's Campaign organizer Aaron Scott offers ten ways regular people can resist and counter-recruit those who have been seduced by White Christian nationalist ideas.Third Place Books is pleased to welcome church worker, organizer, and leader of the Poor People's Campaign Aaron Scott to our Seward Park store for a discussion of his new book, Bring Back Your People: Ten Ways Regular Folks Can Put a Dent in White Christian Nationalism, a practical guide to resisting, organizing, and holding conversations with anyone who has been misled by White Christian nationalist ideas. About Bring Back Your People.. . .This mouthy, practical guide from activist, preacher, and Poor People's Campaign organizer Aaron Scott offers ten ways regular people can resist and counter-recruit those who have been seduced by White Christian nationalist ideas. For White folks alarmed by the rise of Christian nationalism comes this mouthy, practical guide to resisting, organizing, and holding conversations with your cousin Randy or anyone else who has been misled by White Christian nationalist ideas. The rise of White Christian nationalism seems impossible to stop. We need a road map to countering recruitment. And we needed it yesterday. Aaron Scott, a second-generation preacher, third-generation organizer, and leader with the Poor People's Campaign, has watched loved ones and peers get recruited into White Christian nationalism. Here, he shares strategies of relationship and conversation for those of us who don't know what to do. And he dishes out harsh words. Sure, you can invite your cousin Randy to the wine-and-cheese reception with your candidate. But Randy's pulling the night shift, and the Proud Boys are more than willing to give him a ride to their barbecue if he can't afford the price of gas. Somebody once hooked Randy with a story about the world, Scott reminds us. That story was false, but it gave Randy meaning and connection. We've got to give him something better to bring him back. Salty, smart, and searing, Bring Back Your People offers ten ways regular-ass folks can draw others toward a better vision of faith, politics, and our common life. It answers questions like: Who are White Christian nationalists targeting? (Hint: most White folks . . . and beyond.) How do I talk to my hairdresser about it? (Carefully.) Why is it gaining steam so fast? (It's not; you're just catching up.) Along the way Scott introduces a counter-history of White people organizing for real justice, and even what that ornery abolitionist John Brown can offer us today. If you're frightened by the way White Christian nationalism mesmerizes so many--grab this lifeline and hang on tight. Aaron Scottis a third-generation organizer, a second-generation preacher, and a dad. He was born and raised in rural Upstate New York, and has lived and worked in the Northwest for the past seventeen years. Aaron holds a masters degree in Biblical Studies from Union Theological Seminary and has been organizing with poor, homeless, and incarcerated people for over twenty years. Aaron has served as the co-founder of Chaplains on the Harbor, on the national steering committee of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, and is currently the Gender Justice Staff Officer for the Presiding Bishop’s Office of The Episcopal Church. He lives in Tacoma. About Third Place Books Founded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park, Washington, Third Place Books is dedicated to the creation of a community around books and the ideas inside them. Kingfisher'sNettle & Bone, Danielle L. Jensen, Thea Guanzon, Jennifer L. Armentrout, andThe Witch’s Heartby Genevieve Gornichec. In the Finnish wilderness, more than wolves roam the dark forests. For Siiri and Aina, summer’s fading light is a harbinger of unwelcome change. Land-hungry Swedes venture north, threatening the peace; a zealous Christian priest denounces the old ways; and young women have begun to disappear. Siiri vows to protect Aina from danger. But even Siiri cannot stop a death goddess from dragging her friend to Tuonela, the mythical underworld. Determined to save Aina, Siiri braves a dangerous journey north to seek the greatest shaman of legend, the only person to venture to the realm of death and return alive. In Tuonela, the cruel Witch Queen turns Aina’s every waking moment into a living nightmare. But armed with compassion and cleverness, Aina learns the truth of her capture: the king of the underworld himself has plans for her. To return home, Aina must bargain her heart—as Siiri plots a daring rescue of the woman she loves the most. Third Place Books is pleased to welcome former Seattleite Rob Osler for a discussion of his new mystery novel, The Case of the Missing Maid, about Harriet Morrow, a bike-riding, trousers-wearing lesbian, who has just begun her new job as the first female detective at the Windy City's Prescott Agency. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! For accessibility inquiries, please contact events@thirdplacebooks.com Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. About The Case of the Missing Maid.. . .Chicago, 1898. Rough-around-the-edges Harriet Morrow has long been drawn to the idea of whizzing around the city on her bicycle as a professional detective, solving crimes for a living without having to take a husband. Just twenty-one with a younger brother to support, she seizes the chance when the prestigious Prescott Agency hires her as its first woman operative. The move sparks controversy—with skeptical male colleagues, a high-strung office secretary, and her boss, Mr. Theodore Prescott, all waiting for her to unravel under the pressure . . . Only an hour into the job, Harriet has an assignment: Discover the whereabouts of a missing maid from one of the most extravagant mansions on Prairie Avenue. Owner Pearl Bartlett has a reputation for sending operatives on wild goose chases around her grand estate, but Harriet believes the stunningly beautiful Agnes Wozniak has indeed vanished under mysterious circumstances—possibly a victim of kidnapping, possibly a victim of something worse . . . With Mr. Prescott pushing a hard deadline, Harriet’s burgeoning career depends on working through a labyrinth of eccentric characters and murky motives in a race to discover who made Agnes disappear. When her search leads to Chicago’s Polish community and a new friendship in Agnes’s charming older sister, Barbara, clues scattered across the city slowly reveal just how much depends on Harriet’s inexperienced investigation for answers . . . and the deep danger that awaits once she learns the truth. Rob Oslerwrites mysteries with LGBTQ+ main characters. Rob’s debut novel, Devil’s Chew Toy, was a finalist for the Anthony, Agatha, Lefty, and Macavity Awards. His first publication, “Analogue,” won the Robert L. Fish Award at the Mystery Writers of America Annual Edgar Awards, and he is an Edgar–Award finalist for his short story Miss Direction. He has a philosophy degree from the University of Puget Sound and an MBA from the University of Washington, and previously worked as a brand marketing executive for global agencies and corporations.
