In this half day workshop we will dip our toes (or maybe our fabrics!) into the world of Indigo dye vats and Shibori resist techniques. Participants will be instructed in how to create a natural indigo vat, we will also talk through some of the other recipes and methods. In this workshop we will look at traditional Japanese Shibori resist techniques, such as pleating (Kumo), folding, tying (Kanoko), wrapping objects (Ne Maki), stitching (Ori Nui and Miru) and clamping (Itajime), using lightweight cotton to get the best results. Then we will dye these in the indigo vat, re-dipping to achieve the desired colour and witnessing the transformation from green to blue as the fabric oxidises in the air. You will take home a range of indigo- shibori fabric samples. It will be an experimental, fun session, perfect for anyone with a love of indigo blue, textiles, nature and creativity. All materials and fabric are included. Please wear suitable messy clothing, black is best for this workshop. Maximum of 5 people per class Ideally, there needs to be at least 3 people for the class to go ahead, it will be decided at the time and if cancelled a full refund or reschedule will be given. About Indigo: Indigo pigment is extracted from the leaves of Indigofera genus plants and it is the oldest known source of natural blue pigment. It’s use as a dye for textiles goes back at least 6000 years. The earliest recorded recipe for indigo dye was found on a 7th Century BC Babylonian tablet. Indigo was also used for painting and cosmetics in ancient times. For centuries it was a very valuable crop, it still is expensive, but has largely been replaced by a synthetic lab produced version. Nowadays most indigo dye is synthetic. About Shibori: Shibori is a Japanese manual resist technique for dyeing patterns into fabric, traditionally dyed with indigo but can be any colour. The technique is similar to tie dye but with Shibori all manner of things can be used to create an irregular pattern: tying with twine, cardboard, clips, sticks, poles, rocks, anything goes. The beauty is found in its delicate irregularities and Wabi-Sabi imperfections. Information Source: Flax Project C.I.C. | eventbrite

Guided by professional glass maker and tutor Annette Daly, you will make some beautiful and unique fused glass Christmas decorations (up to 4 small or 2 medium) or a 10cm x 10cm picture or coaster. Although glass cutting is not required for this short workshop, you can have a go at this fun skill if you wish. There will be a wide selection of top-quality Bullseye glass and accessory glass for you to use, some of which is exclusive to Annette Daly Glass. This course is suitable for both adults and children (from 5 years +) and no previous experience of glass is required. Ideally children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult who can either book their own space and make their own pieces or come along for free to supervise. However, as my studio is quite small, free spaces are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. If your child is younger than 12 and you have been unable to book a free space and do not wish to make your own piece, please stay close by (e.g. there is a lovely kitchen with relaxing area in the HQ building so you can have a tea or coffee there) and leave your contact number with me in case your child needs you. The decorations you will make can be enjoyed on your Christmas tree for many years to come and also make lovely gifts. No experience is required for this course (although anyone who has done fused glass before is, of course, very welcome.) This course is run in a small group (usually no more than 8 people) to ensure lots of individual attention. Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself to be creative or ‘arty’. Fused glass is a very forgiving medium and even complete beginners can get fantastic results. Annette will provide example decorations, templates and ideas to get you started but the possibilities are endless and your decorations will be beautiful and unique. Your decorations will be fired by Annette in a specialist glass kiln after the course and will be available for collection in a week or two or they can be posted for the cost of postage. Venue: This workshop will be held in Annette’s studio (Unit 26, HQ Building, 237 Union Street, Stonehouse PL1 3HQ.) There is limited free visitor parking on site (please register your car on the screen in the main entrance for 3 hours free parking), or there is some free street parking and paid spaces on the street and nearby. Gift vouchers (valid for 1 year and redeemable against all courses) are also available and make fantastic Christmas presents. Next Steps: Annette runs a variety of courses including half day, full day and multi-part courses. She also runs fused glass jewellery workshops so if you enjoy this workshop, there are plenty of opportunities to carry on and learn more fused glass skills. Some participants from previous workshops have enjoyed the courses so much that they have gone on to set up their own studios and buy their own kilns! It follows young working-class characters as they navigate the highs and lows of the evening, revealing their dreams, insecurities, and tangled relationships. Join RAMP for the first talk in our Artist Spotlight series, an inspiring TED Talk-style event designed for creatives, artists, hobbyists of all skill levels, and the general public! Kicking off the March series, studio artists Caroline Green & David Smart will take the stage to share insights into their artistic process, inspirations, and what it takes to make a living in the art world. Caroline Green is a fine artist, children's writer and illustrator. Her larger scale work in oils and mixed media are lively interpretations of the subject portraying the mood and atmosphere of the subject. She uses her smaller scale work in watercolour, pen and ink to illustrate her stories about her little dog Oscar and his adventures. Self-published she has successfully produced several in the series and now has a loyal Oscar fan club! David Smart designer on Art of Noise (ZTT) and Frankie Goes to Hollywood (ZTT), award-winning artist David has work in the V&A permanent collection. With a vast background in design, and academic. David jas been developing an art practice making responses to Dartmoor – the extraordinary landscape, prehistoric field systems and settlements, moorland meadows, woodlands and more recently, he has begun to look closer at coastline and urban landscapes. He employs many of the principles and processes in graphic design to define space and form. Looking at landscape, he deconstructs and simplifies. His responses are about experience rather than what is actually seen – a sensation, feeling or mood – rather than anything representational. Expect engaging 20-minute talks, followed by a 20-minute interactive Q&A session, where you can ask questions and dive deeper into their journey and finish off with 20-minute of networking and socialising. Why Attend? ✅ Gain insider knowledge on the creative process ✅ Learn how artists sustain their careers ✅ Network with fellow artists, designers & enthusiasts ✅ Enjoy a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere ✅ Ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine!
