Intimacy Coordination as Art and Activism - Dr Tanya Horeck | The Sage of Cambridge

Literary Arts
In this talk, Professor Tanya Horeck discusses her British Academy funded project on intimacy coordination. While stunt and fight coordinators have long existed, the role of the intimacy coordinator only fully emerged in the wake of the viral #MeToo movement in 2017. And yet, as Horeck will discuss, the role that intimacy coordinators play in choreographing intimate scenes and ensuring that production practices are safer for everyone involved is vital and long overdue. Sharing the findings from a series of interviews she conducted with intimacy coordinators in 2021-2023, Horeck examines how the attempt to embed practices of care on television and film production sets is producing new depictions of sex, intimacy, and consent onscreen. As part of her talk, Horeck will discuss Netflix series including Sex Education and Heartstopper. Tanya Horeck is a Professor of Film and Feminist Media Studies at Anglia Ruskin University. Her scholarship focuses on sexual and gender-based violence prevention. Her books include Public Rape: Representing Violation in Fiction and Film (2004) and Justice on Demand: True Crime in the Digital Streaming Era (2019). She has two forthcoming books: Postdigital Teens: Understanding and Preventing Technology-Facilitated Gender Based Violence on Screens and at School (with Jessica Ringrose and Kaitlynn Mendes) and The Cinema of Sarah Polley. The talk will begin at 19:00; please arrive beforehand to allow for a prompt start. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available from the hotel bar.
