This extraordinary exhibition, currently on display at the prestigious Paepcke Gallery in Aspen, offers a unique departure from Carter's iconic geometric and constructivist paintings. Instead, he delves into his fascination with Earth sciences and explores astronomical, natural, and geological phenomena through a series of captivating mixed-media pieces.
Richard Carter's artistic journey began in 1971 when he migrated from New Jersey to the scenic Roaring Fork Valley. Working as a self-taught painter and studio assistant to the legendary Herbert Bayer in Bayer's Red Mountain studio from 1972 to 1978, Carter honed his skills in various artistic disciplines. His repertoire expanded to include painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry design, exhibition design, environmental works, and architectural projects.
In 1976, Carter, together with two other esteemed Aspen artists, spearheaded the transformation of the Holy Cross Power House into the renowned Aspen Center for Visual Arts, which eventually evolved into the esteemed Aspen Art Museum. Today, you can find Carter immersed in his creative process at his studio along the serene banks of the Roaring Fork River in Basalt.
