Working as a self-taught painter and studio assistant to the legendary Herbert Bayer in Bayer's Red Mountain studio from 1972 to 1978, Carter honed his skills in various artistic disciplines. His repertoire expanded to include painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry design, exhibition design, environmental works, and architectural projects. In 1976, Carter, together with two other esteemed Aspen artists, spearheaded the transformation of the Holy Cross Power House into the renowned Aspen Center for Visual Arts, which eventually evolved into the esteemed Aspen Art Museum.
