The Night Birds The next gripping, atmospheric horror novel from New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden, set in a deteriorated, half-sunken freighter ship off the coast of Galveston, TX. Charlie Book and Ruby Cahill have history. After their love ended in heartbreak years ago, they never expected to see each other again. Now, as part of his work for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Book lives aboard the Christabel, a 19th century freighter half-sunken off the shore of Galveston. Over many years, a massive forest of mangrove trees has grown up through the deck of the ship, creating a startlingly beautiful enigma Book calls the Floating Forest. As a powerful storm churns through the Gulf, he intends to sleep on board as usual. But when he arrives at the dock, he's stunned to find Ruby there waiting for him. And she's not alone. With her are a mysterious woman and her infant child, asking Book to hide them safely aboard the Christabel. Christopher Golden Christopher Golden is the New York Times bestselling, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of such novels as Road of Bones, Ararat, Snowblind, and Red Hands. Secret Lives of the Dead A dark folk horror tale of a deadly family curse, crime and murder that is sure to turn your blood cold, from the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of Netflix's The Silence. When Jodi, BB and Matt decide to burgle a derelict country home as a thrilling dare, they become embroiled in a twisted legacy of supernatural terror. There are rumours of a bizarre curse hanging over the hoard of antiques and jewellery within the house. And unbeknownst to the others, one member of the trio has darker motives for breaking into the property. Lem is a brutal man obsessed with a gruesome family legend. He is determined to right the wrongs of the past and lift the curse placed on his bloodline. By completing the work of his father and bringing a bizarre selection of scattered relics back together, he hopes to be free of the malign influence that has hounded every generation of his family for two centuries. Jacqui Dankworth returns to St Giles' Oxford with her Trio led by Memphis-born pianist Charlie Wood singing songs from her new album 'Windmills' - a dazzling collection of evocative new interpretations from a wide variety of genres: songs from classic films, Broadway show tunes and jazz standards, atmospheric French chanson and Brazilian bossa-nova, and even a beautiful new composition by Dankworth herself. As one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK, Jacqui Dankworth is known primarily as a jazz singer, but her broad musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues, and other influences. Jacqui’s new album Windmills is a vocal tour-de-force of classic songs by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Michel Legrand, Sérgio Mendes and others, featuring some of the very best of UK jazz and classical musicians. This is certain to be a wonderful and memorable evening - a dramatic presentation of musical brilliance that is destined to mesmerise loyal fans and newcomers alike. In all her incarnations, she exhibits a subtle control of dynamics and a voluptuous tonal richness that seems to make almost any material sound special. – John Fordham, The Guardian One of our finest singers, regardless of category – Clive Davis, The Sunday TimesFor details of travel to St. Giles' Oxford see our Jazz at St Giles Web page. Sheldonian Theatre, Saturday 14 June 2025, 7:30pmSchumann - Genoveva Overture Bartók - Violin Concerto no.2 Brahms - Symphony no.4 Stefan Simonca-Oprita violin Robert Max conductor In Schumann's only opera, Genoveva, drama ensues after a failed attempt to seduce Genoveva, the wife of Siegfrid. Mirroring the storyline, the overture follows the same dramatic trajectory, with music moving through ominous and wrenching moods, arriving at eventual majesty and triumph. Bartók's second violin concerto was written for Zoltán Székely, his long-standing recital partner. This concerto is infused with styles from Hungarian folk music, and is very much a celebration of life, and is played for us by Stefan Simonca-Oprita. Despite featuring great warmth and lyrical beauty, Brahm's 4th symphony has a definite tragic character. The finale is based on a passacaglia: a sequence variations on a bass pattern. It ends with a bleak but thrilling conclusion, cementing its place as a firm favourite in the classical repertoire. Information Source: Oxford Symphony Orchestra | eventbrite
