Come and Sing Byrd's Mass for 4 Voices and Tudor anthems | St Mary's Church
May 10, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Usk
Thank you for your interest in attending this Come and Sing event. As a conductor and singer who has recently moved back to South Wales, I'm looking forward to meeting kindred spirits who share a love of Tudor choral music!
In this workshop we will sing Byrd's Mass for 4 Voices as well as anthems by Byrd that, collectively, offer a biographical and compositional narrative about this incredible composer. We will also sing anthems by Byrd's contemporaries, including those of his teacher Thomas Tallis.
We will explore the religious and political contexts in which Byrd was living and writing and the ways that his Catholic faith are expressed through his music. We will take time to understand Byrd's use of the text in the Mass which reveals much about his feelings regarding the treatment of Catholics in Protestant England. We will also look at Byrd's friendship with Lord John Petre and his household at Ingatestone Hall.
And in doing all of this, I hope very much that, first and foremost, we will have fun!
The workshop will run from 10.30 am - 4.00 pm. Then we will hold an informal concert at 5pm. The concert will be a public one, with proceeds given to the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society. There will be a small group of singers attending the workshop who have performed these works with me in concert before, so I'm confident that we will be able to hold the concert. We should be finished by 6.30 pm.
If you are able to wear black shirt/blouse and black trousers/skirt/dress for the concert that would be fantastic, but please don't worry if that's not possible. Also, if you would like to attend the workshop but don't feel able to commit to the concert that is absolutely fine too. Just let me know in advance if that's the case please.
I will send out digital copies of the music in advance. If you would like to work from a published version of the Byrd Mass, I will be using the Chester Music version edited by Henry Washington which you can buy from www.musicroom.com
If you need to contact me, please do so by email: dalewebb@mac.com
With warm wishess,
Dale
