What's Your Verdict? | Turner Fenton Secondary School North, Lecture Hall
Nov 6, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Brampton
What's Your Verdict? A presentation of monologues by the participants of The Longform Acting Workshop led by Jimish Thakkar. Come join us for an exciting evening of drama and judgement on Wednesday, 6th November, 8.00 PM at Turner Fenton Secondary School North, Lecture Hall. Witness talented actors bring to life thrilling narratives that will keep you on the edge of your seat as they all plead for a not guilty judgement. The Concept An evening of performances where 11 individuals await their fate, each facing a death sentence for crimes they committed under circumstances that defy simple justification. Each character now faces accusations where their actions, either directly or indirectly are a fitting context of a capital punishment scenario as the judge (the audience) offers them a final opportunity to plead their case and pleads for a second chance, The fictionalized monologues presented in What's Your Verdict? are inspired by real historical events. The Challenge (for performers and the audience) Though the circumstances surrounding each of the 11 characters are unique, their appeal is exactly the same. The creative decision to unify their pleas into identical words mirrors the harsh reality that, despite the individual complexities of each person’s life, the system of judgment often renders those distinctions meaningless, reducing human life to a series of repeated pleas, struggles, and cries for clemency. The Proceedings (of the performances) In an intriguing twist, all 11 participants will present their initial plea for survival. After hearing all the appeals, the audience will vote to select individuals for a second chance who will then deliver the appeals again, but with new depth, emotion, and nuance based on the feedback and reactions from the audience. Following this, the audience will vote once more, granting some of them “not guilty” verdict.

The year 2007 saw the formation of a formal Board of Directors and incorporation followed in 2008. The establishment of a cultural centre for use as a gathering place for the community happened in 2009. The Indigenous Network’s growing group of staff and volunteers have helped to drive the organization forward to dismantle systemic and cultural service challenges among the Indigenous and Non-Indigenous populations in the region to facilitate cultural understanding and reconciliation.
