BIG BRAW POETRY LAUNCH PARTY | The Voodoo Rooms
Apr 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
West
BIG BRAW POETRY LAUNCH PARTY—ColinBramwellxCharlesLangxPatrickRomeroMcCafferty Friends, family, strangers, poets, poetry lovers, regular lovers—whoever you are, you’re invited to our party. Patrick Romero McCafferty, Charles Lang and Colin Bramwell—three of Scotland’s best up-and-coming poets—are uniting to launch their latest books together. And what better way to celebrate than a night out at Edinburgh’s funnest venue, The Voodoo Rooms Speakeasy! In return for your attendance, Patrick, Charles and Colin will regale you with some of their best new poems—though we’re mainly here to celebrate, so we promise not to read for too long. Once our books have been firmly launched, we’ll charge our glasses, get some tunes on and have a little knees up. Come and hear us do our thing—come stay for a drink or three after. We’ll all have books to sell on the night of course—however, if you’d like to buy a discount bundle of all three books you can do so on here. Bundlers get free entry. (If the entry price of a regular ticket is prohibitive to you, reach out to us and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.) Here’s some blurbs to whet your appetite. The poems in Patrick Romero McCafferty’s debut pamphlet Glass Knot Sun pose perennial questions of land, love, and labour. They do this through the central metaphors of building (from adobe bricks to boat-making) and gathering (from windfall almonds to trawling nets), the poem becoming part record of subsistence, part song. With a clarion and uncompromising voice, Charles Lang’s first collection The Oasis maps a labyrinth of memories, blending sharp wit with darker undercurrents as he explores identity, masculinity, class and ecology. Lang offers an authentic snapshot of working-class lives, where beauty is found in both the mundane and the extraordinary; in the human and the more-than-human. A sonorous celebration of language and place, The Oasis is a vivid ode to the city’s streets and stories, a testament to resilience and belonging. Fower Pessoas is the most original work of translation that you will read this year: a bold reimagining of Fernando Pessoa’s poetry. Following his subject’s unique approach to composition, Colin Bramwell puts all four of Pessoa’s heteronyms into a present-day Scots-language vernacular, and so creates a parochial Pessoa for our own times. Readers will be delighted by this witty, emotive and artful reinterpretation of an indispensable European poet. All welcome - the more the merrier! Come join us for what promises to be a highlight of this year's poetry calendar. You'll hear some of our best and brightest young things strut their stuff; and then, unlike most poetry readings, we can have a genuinely ace party afterwards. Can't say fairer than that.

Apr 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
West
In a career spanning over thirty-five years, Phil Differ has carved a reputation as one of Scotland’s absolute best stand-up comedians and TV writers/producers. As well as being in high demand at comedy clubs across the country, Phil has been behind many of Scotland’s most popular and best loved comedy shows, including Rab C. Nesbitt, Chewin’ the Fat and Still Game to name a few, plus joke-writing credits for other big shows like Not the Nine O’Clock News and Spitting Image, accumulating more than a few showbiz tales along the way. “He's the quiet genius of the Scottish comedy” - Rory Bremner “The agile mind behind an impressive resume… the writing is sharp and current.” – Chortle “Differ has had a profound effect on Scottish comedy. Part of a golden age for writers.” – Glasgowist “Well-placed, well-timed and delivered punchlines… worth catching if you can.” – Broadway Baby Host: Rob Kane Opening act: TBA Middle acts: TBA **PLEASE READ CAREFULLY** · Tickets can be refunded or exchanged no less than 24 hours before the show. · Line-ups can be subject to change at short notice. · The show is in three 30 minute parts separated by two intervals. Doors open at 7pm, one hour before the start time of 8pm. Please arrive before the show starts but not before 7pm. Attendees who arrive late will not be granted admission or a refund. · This is NOT a standing event. All audience members must be seated while the performance is underway, unless ordering at the bar or using the toilets. When ordering at the bar, please whisper. · Entrance and exit is via the side door only; please wait outside at the door for ticket check and to be seated by the doorman. · You will probably have to share a table. You may not be able to sit together if the remaining chairs available are spread out. If you are particular about seating we recommend arriving as early as possible. · Seats in the front half of the room must be filled before seating in the back half is allocated. · Seating in the alcove at the back is reserved for the comedians and their guests only. · Don’t talk or heckle during the performances. This rule is NOT optional. It is very distracting for both the performer and other audience members. Some performers (usually the host) might talk to the audience, but otherwise please let the comedians do the talking. Heckling does not ‘help the show’. Think of it like cinema rules: laughter, cheers, applause are all great, but talking or yelling out is not. And another cinema rule… · Please put your phone on silent. Photos are fine but please no video or flash photography. · If your chair is not facing the stage when you come in, please rotate it when the show starts. · These shows are for people aged 18 and over. Acts are booked based on their ability to make people laugh, beyond that we respect freedom of expression. If you disagree or are offended by what you hear, you are free to express this by not laughing, by leaving, or by respectfully raising your objections with the act after the show or via social media. You may not interrupt an on-going performance. · Audience members who repeatedly break these rules will be asked to leave.

Join Rainy Day Books at Unity Temple to celebrate Olivie Blake's newest book, Gifted & Talented. This event includes a moderated conversation with Olivie and an opportunity to get your book signed and personalized. The Book Gifted & Talented Where there’s a will, there’s a war. Thayer Wren, the brilliant CEO of Wrenfare Magitech and so-called father of modern technology, is dead. Any one of his three telepathically and electrokinetically gifted children would be a plausible inheritor to the Wrenfare throne. Or at least, so they like to think. Meredith, textbook accomplished eldest daughter and the head of her own groundbreaking biotech company, has recently cured mental illness. You're welcome! If only her father's fortune wasn't her last hope for keeping her journalist ex-boyfriend from exposing what she really is: a total fraud. Arthur, second-youngest congressman in history, fights the good fight every day of his life. And yet, his wife might be leaving him, and he's losing his re-election campaign. But his dead father’s approval in the form of a seat on the Wrenfare throne might just turn his sinking ship around. Eilidh, once the world's most famous ballerina, has spent the last five years as a run-of-the-mill marketing executive at her father’s company after a life-altering injury put an end to her prodigious career. She might be lacking in accolades compared to her siblings, but if her father left her everything, it would finally validate her worth—by confirming she'd been his favorite all along. On the pipeline of gifted kid to clinically depressed adult, nobody wins—but which Wren will come out on top? The Author Olivie Blake is the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six, Alone with You in the Ether, One for My Enemy, and Masters of Death. As Alexene Farol Follmuth, she is also the author of the young adult rom-coms Twelfth Knight and My Mechanical Romance. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, goblin prince/toddler, and rescue pit bull.
