Midnight Release Party! Emily Henry, Great Big Beautiful Life | Rainy Day Books

Join us for an evening of giveaways, snacks, and activities in celebration of Emily Henry's newest release!Limited signed copies of Great Big Beautiful Life will be raffled to attendees!Enjoy an evening with fellow romance lovers at your favorite indie bookstore! Books will be passed out at midnight. Please Read: Tickets are limited to ensure we can uphold safety standards in-store. The 2 ticket, 1 book option has limited availability. Your ticket includes a book, and no additional pre-order is necessary. The Book Great Big Beautiful Life Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: to write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the twentieth century. When Margaret invites them both for a one-month trial period, after which she’ll choose the person who’ll tell her story, there are three things keeping Alice’s head in the game. One: Alice genuinely likes people, which means people usually like Alice—and she has a whole month to win the legendary woman over. Two: She’s ready for this job and the chance to impress her perennially unimpressed family with a Serious Publication. Three: Hayden Anderson, who should have no reason to be concerned about losing this book, is glowering at her in a shaken-to-the core way that suggests he sees her as competition. But the problem is, Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story. Pieces they can’t swap to put together because of an ironclad NDA and an inconvenient yearning pulsing between them every time they’re in the same room. And it’s becoming abundantly clear that their story—just like the tale Margaret’s spinning—could be a mystery, tragedy, or love ballad . . . depending on who’s telling it.

Unsettling CanLit: Reading John Norton's Journals | Northrop Frye Centre (VC 102)
Apr 22, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
West
About the talk... This paper resituates the origins of Canadian literature towards what Andrea Medovarski calls ‘unsettlement’ texts that have been ignored or remain unknown within Canadian literature. As part of this unsettling, I will present my research on The Journal of Major John Norton, Teyoninhokarawen. Norton was a Cherokee, Scottish writer whose journal, spanning the years 1809 – 1812, documents his travels from the Mohawk community on the Grand River (of which he was a member) to Cherokee territories in the southern US. Norton’s father was a Cherokee man whose village was razed by the British and who was brought to England as a boy. Norton himself was raised in Scotland, migrated to Upper Canada, and documented his search for his patrilineal family in his journal. His journal is a rich document of Indigenous, settler, and Black relations in the Americas, particularly as it evokes an alternative vision of modernity, one centered around Indigenous self-determination and that syncretically combines European and Indigenous worldviews. Norton’s journal is important in its own right and also because Carl Klinck (working alongside Northrop Frye) discovered Norton's journal while putting together The Literary History of Canada. I query Klinck's explicit decision to exclude Norton’s text from the History and suggest that Norton's important writing offers an alternative starting point for a renewed vision of Canadian literature. About the speaker... Paul Barrett is an Associate Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph and a Visiting Fellow at the Northrop Frye Centre. He is the author of Blackening Canada: Diaspora, Race, Multiculturalism, the co-author of the Routledge Introduction to English Canadian Literature and Digital Humanities (with Sarah Roger) and the editor of ‘Membering Austin Clarke and Future Horizons: Digital Humanities in Canada. His presentation is part of his new research project that traces humanist discourse in Canadian literature.

Roger Newman: Boys Reading and Signing | Hub City Bookshop & Press
Apr 22, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
West
Join us at 6 pm on April 22, 2025 at Hub City Bookshop for an evening with Roger Newman. Boys by Roger Newman follows the journey of two friends, one Black and one white, as they navigate the complexities of race, privilege, and justice in mid-20th century America. Their bond is tested by societal expectations and personal struggles, revealing the deep impact of history and identity on their lives. Get a 10% discount on the book when you RSVP on Eventbrite and present it at the bookshop register! About the Book: Boys by Roger Newman is a compelling and heartfelt exploration of family, friendship, and resilience set against the turbulent backdrop of the Great Depression in the rural American South. The story revolves around young Petey Barnes and Alex, a Black boy taken in by Petey’s family under tense and challenging circumstances. Newman crafts a poignant tale of loyalty and survival through their bond as the boys navigate a world divided by race, hardship, and unyielding societal expectations. Boys is an incredibly moving coming-of-age story that beautifully portrays friendship’s strength and the courage to face adversity. Newman captures the daily rhythms and struggles of the era, bringing to life both the beauty and starkness of rural America. I don’t even know how to describe this book without writing a thousand words because it's worth a thousand stars. The world-building is immersive and impressive, with vivid descriptions of farm life, dusty small towns, and the Southern landscapes. The farm setting is almost a character, underscoring the hardships and resilience of those living off the land. The story’s structure is layered, with Petey and Alex alternating perspectives, adding depth to their relationship and allowing readers to experience the complexities of the era’s racial tensions. Roger Newman’s rich and subtle storytelling offers readers an evocative glimpse into a difficult period while highlighting the transformative power of love and loyalty. This novel is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, capturing the essence of a friendship that transcends the divides of an unforgiving world. It's on my top ten list of books to reread in 2025 . - Carol Thompson for Readers' Favorite About the Author:In addition to Boys, Roger Newman is the author of a series of medical thrillers: Occam’s Razor, Two Drifters, and What Becomes; and the historical fiction novel Will O’ the Wisp: Madness, War, and Recompense. He is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, specializing in the care of women with multiple gestations. He has authored almost two hundred scientific papers, a dozen book chapters, and the award-winning and bestselling When You’re Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads; Fourth Edition. He served as the national president for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and was voted by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America” for thirty consecutive years. He and his wife, Diane, live on the Ashley River in Charleston, South Carolina.

This event includes a moderated conversation with Timothy, a Q&A, and an opportunity to get your book signed and personalized. The Book Harbingers: What January 6 and Charlottesville Reveal About Rising Threats to American Democracy As lead investigator into both January 6 and Charlottesville, Tim Heaphy discovered that American democracy was headed toward a reckoning. In his book Harbingers, which he completed before the November 2024 election, Tim concluded that apathy poses greater threats to the rule of law than would-be autocrats, and that widespread civic engagement would be essential to safeguarding our values and restoring faith in our institutions. He proposes a number of everyday measures that Americans can and must start taking right now in order to restore our faith and hope in the future. The Author Timothy J. Heaphy was Chief Investigative Counsel of the House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. He also oversaw the independent investigation into the August 12, 2017 riot in Charlottesville, Virginia. Join us for aphotographer talk centered around Call Me Lola. In Search of Mother by Loli Kantor. CALL ME LOLA. IN SEARCH OF MOTHER. BY LOLI KANTOR Publisher Hatje Cantz, November 2024 For over 20 years, Kantor has been excavating the family archives assembled by her Polish-born father, a doctor and political activist. Her mother Lola – who died after giving birth to her and who bears the same name as Kantor – lies at the heart of the project: a woman manifested through images and stories rather than direct memory. Deeply personal, the project speaks to the wider upheavals of the 20th century: war and displacement, love and loss, trauma and bereavement. More than 150 images – archival family photographs, wartime and postwar documents, objects belonging to Kantor’s mother, and her own newly created photographs – feature alongside an essay on photography and memory by photographic historian and curator Dr Nissan Perez, an interview with the artist by her curator daughter, and a selection of insightful annotations by Kantor herself.
