Munro Bagging 101; Mountain Safety Course | Glencoe
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)
Glencoe
Munro Bagging 101 is a two-day group mountain safety course designed to support women who are looking to begin or progress their Munro-bagging journey. If you're a keen hillwalker but lack the skills or confidence to head out alone, or if you are new to hillwalking and want to find the best way to start bagging the Munros (or other mountains), then this is the course for YOU! The event is supported by SILVA compasses and Harvey Maps and comes with sizeable discounts off their products.
The group will meet at the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team Centre, where the weekend starts with a day of navigation and route planning, suitable for beginner to intermediate level. The emphasis will be on map amd compass skills, as the foundation of any safe day in the mountains. We will also discuss maps and resources for climbing the Munros, and suggestions on how to progress through the tick-list.
Together we will explore some complex yet accessible terrain which is ideal for putting navigation theory into practice. We will cover techniques for map reading and route finding in all weathers, including poor visibility.
On day 2 we will head out to climb a Munro together as a group. While we are on the hill we will discuss mountain safety 'best-practice' for hillwalkers, as well as the role weather plays in decision-making on the hill. We will consolidate our compass work and take a look at emergency shelter/equipment and simple self-rescue procedures. This second day has am emphasis on staying safe in the mountain environment.
This course is delivered by ML qualified and experienced female guides, with a background in mountaineering and/or Mountain Rescue. Our goal is to empower women with the skills and confidence neccessary to 'take the reigns' when hiking in groups or to explore the mountains independently.
No previous experience is necessary but a good basic level of fitness is required. An equipment list will be provided to all ladies booking with Girls on Hills and a SILVA Expedition 4 compass can be provided (on-loan) if requested in advance.
Girls on Hills is a 'no-frills' experience - we don't include food or accommodation, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own to suit travel logistics or budget. We can provide shuttle support to and from the mountain from Glencoe/local area for those visiting without their own transportation.
We pride ourselves on being 'approachable and relatable', so please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns!
We look forward to climbing a Munro with you!

Hidden Glencoe - hillwalking weekend | Glencoe
May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Glencoe
Two days of guided hillwalking amongst the beautiful, rugged mountains of the
Glencoe National Nature Reserve
- with local mountain leaders. We can't confirm the weather but we can guarantee that you'll escape the crowds with our
Hidden
Glencoe
itinerary; two tough and less-frequented summits which are always worth the effort:
Day 1:
Sgòr
na
h-
Ulaidh
is also known as the hidden or forgotten Munro of Glencoe, being out of sight for from the main road through the glen. Set-back towards Glen Creran, this summit is also a tough hike - but worth it for the views into Argyll and over the back of the Bidean nam Bian massif.
Day 2:
Garbh
-
bheinn
, is a Corbett at 808m, tucked behind the infamous Aonach Eagach ridge. Despite being a relatively short walk from the road, this peak puts up quite the battle for its worthwhile summit views!
Overcome the low-level bogs and hold onto your morale for the loose path on gravel and scree to pass through boulders - finally you will reach a spectacular viewpoint. Look ahead over Rannoch Moor to Schiehallion, and back over your shoulder down Loch Leven to admire the outline of the Pap of Glencoe with Loch Linnhe beyond.
These are not easy hikes are they are pathless in places too. You will require a good level of hill fitness to get the most from this weekend. The exact routes taken will depend on the weather but all will enjoy the impressive scenery, as we take the 'trail less traveled' over the quieter mountains of Glencoe.
Our ethos is friendly and supportive and walking pace will be relaxed and sociable. To find out more about what's involved visit:
