Shining like the Sun, Part 4. The Transformative Way | New Camaldoli Hermitage
Jun 27, 2025 (UTC-7)
Big Sur
This series of four retreats will focus on the writings of
Thomas Merton
, an influential Trappist monk of the 20th century. During his famous pilgrimage to Asia, he kept a journal where he scribbled in the margins,
"Eckhart is my lifeboat."
The 13th-century Dominican mystic
Meister Eckhart
is known for developing a
fourfold spiritual path
: the positive way, the negative way, the creative way, and the transformative way. Merton followed in Eckhart's footsteps. Each weekend in this series will consider select writings of Merton corresponding to one of the four paths:
Thoughts in Solitude, New Seeds of Contemplation, Fire Watch, and Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander
. Each weekend can stand independently, but attending all four will contribute to seeing the breadth of Merton's thought.

Two plays by Samuel Beckett: Krapp's Last Tape and Rockaby (Limited space!) | Henry Miller Memorial Library
Jan 26, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Big Sur
It isn't very often you can see two classic Beckett plays inside the Library on a cozy winter's evening. Well, this is your opportunity! Directed and performed by Dennis Leroy Kangalee of the Kangalee Arts Ensemble (NYC) and Justine Stock of New Canon Theatre Co. (Monterey), Krapp's Last Tape (1957) and Rockaby (1983) deal with the angst of memory within the mystery of aging; they ask us to consider what the culmination of a life experience is, or can be. In a time where nothing seems to make sense and the only thing guaranteed is aging or death, our bliss fleeting but attainable, Stock and Kangalee's production is a reminder that the real wars are internal. An indoor performance means limited seating, so act now! The show will last 1 hour plus an intimate Q&A post performance with champagne closing night reception. Wine and beer will also be available for purchase. Welcome!
