Embracing Modernism: Big names from the Stadtmuseum Berlin | Karlsruhe

Embracing Modernism: Big names from the Stadtmuseum Berlin | Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe
Exhibitions
Twelve highlights from its premium collection will be guests at the Berlinische Galerie from October 2022. They bring new tones to the permanent in-house exhibition, sparking a conversation with resident works. Sharing collections and jointly making them accessible to the public must become standard museum practice in the future. In this instance, the partnership was prompted by extensive conversion work at the Märkisches Museum, which is scheduled to close for four years in 2023, leaving the foundation Stadtmuseum Berlin without its principal home. To ensure that significant paintings from its collection can remain on display, the idea was born in the two houses of integrating selected works into the permanent exhibition “Art in Berlin 1880-1980”. Early modern art is a particular strength of the Stadtmuseum Berlin holdings. The paintings to be hosted at the Berlinische Galerie are by Max Beckmann, Theo von Brockhusen, Lovis Corinth, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Walter Leistikow, Max Liebermann, Edvard Munch and Lesser Ury. All of them were important figures who enriched the city’s art scene in the early 20th century.

The ZKM | Karlsruhe is honoring the work of the Stuttgart-based artist Ulrich Bernhardt (*1942) with an exhibition called »Ulrich Bernhardt. NOW: It was, will be and is«. Bernhardt is one of the most important pioneers of media art in Baden-Württemberg.Bernhardt is a video and installation artist who's been thinking about how current technologies and social change relate to Greek mythology since the early 1970s. He's especially interested in how big-tech developments, like nuclear power, and their consequences, shape our awareness. At the heart of the exhibition are two installations by the artist from the ZKM collection, »The River« (1978) and »The Sarcophagus« (1996), which deal with different aspects of time, transience, and duration.

Schirin Kretschmann: Ten By One | PEAC Museum

Sep 21, 2025–Feb 8, 2026 (UTC+1)
Freiburg im Breisgau
Exhibitions
The artist Schirin Kretschmann works in the tension between installation painting and performative forms of work. For her solo exhibition TEN BY ONE at the PEAC Museum, Schirin Kretschmann develops a new ensemble of works that responds to the local conditions by radically recoding the exhibition spaces. Using expansive installations, sound and video works, performances, and context-specific interventions, she creates an entirely new situation: Through small and large, loud and quiet events that continually connect and relate to one another, she transforms the exhibition space into a vibrant sphere and opens up a multifaceted choreographic experience for visitors. Spontaneous interactions, loops of perception, or pauses in perception challenge visitors to rethink familiar perspectives and to no longer experience the exhibition as merely a static, limited event.
