Shark Arm Case | Justice and Police Museum

The Shark Arm Case Copyright on photo belongs to owner. A Million to One ChanceANZAC DAY, 1935. A shark exhibited at the Coogee Aquarium vomits up a human arm, bearing a distinctive tattoo. Investigators identify the arm as belonging to Jim Smith, a small-time crook turned police informant, who has been missing for three weeks. What’s more, the arm was severed with an axe, rather than being bitten off! Suspicion falls on the forger Patrick Brady, named by Smith in connection with the sinking of the luxury yacht, The Pathfinder, and subsequent attempts to collect the insurance. But finding Brady, let alone the truth, means taking a deep dive into Sydney’s criminal underworld. Secrets of the DeepSmuggling, insurance fraud and now murder. Crimes that seem to point towards an unlikely pair of Sydney boat-builders. Reginald Holmes and Albert Stannard are respectable businessmen with loving families – even if Smith did work for Holmes at the time of the Pathfinder incident, how could they possibly be involved in such sordid goings-on? In a city where cocaine is illegal and booze restricted, there is money to be made – a lot of money. Their alibis are watertight but rumour has it that Holmes cherishes some bad habits. A holiday house in Cronulla may hold the answer, but so may the murky waters of Gunnamatta Bay. And where, after all, is Patrick Brady? Detective or Devil?Incorruptible, unflappable, Detective Sergeant Frank Matthews has cracked some of Sydney’s toughest cases. His commitment to justice is absolute, even if his methods are not always the most refined. Before him now is an opportunity that could seal his reputation and take him to the very top of the force - if he finds Smith’s murderer and makes them talk, it will expose a net of corruption entangling the entire waterfront. Lies, guns and money, and the criminal code of silence stand in his way, but Matthews will let nothing stop him. No matter what lengths he has to go to, or who gets crushed underfoot. Wives on the WarpathGladys Smith wants to know what really happened to her husband. Grace Brady wants to keep her husband out of gaol. Burned by the scandal surrounding The Pathfinder, Inie Holmes just wants it all to go away. It may be a man’s world, but that doesn’t mean they’ll sit quietly while police and journalists tear up their lives. Besides, you know what they say – you don’t just marry the man, you marry the business! Even the wife of an aquarium owner might find herself doing things she never imagined she’d do. With so many unanswered questions and so much at stake, only one thing is sure – there’s blood in the water and sharks, of all kinds, are circling. Sydney harbour is in for one hell of a show! Founded in 2011, Ventanas interweaves flamenco, Sephardic and Balkan music and dance, and their own original compositions. They have released three albums (2013, 2015, 2019) and have toured extensively throughout North America, including a sold-out show at the Skirball Centre in Los Angeles in 2019. They have been nominated for four Canadian Folk Music Awards, including Best Traditional Singer and Best Ensemble. The six-piece Toronto-based world music ensemble is fronted by the powerhouse vocalist and dancer Tamar Ilana, and features the city’s finest world musicians. They perform in over 20 languages such as Ladino, Spanish, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Hebrew, French, Romani and Arabic, drawing inspiration from today’s worldwide themes of migration and the questioning of one’s identity. Tamar’s childhood was spent gathering songs from small villages on the edge of the Mediterranean and dancing flamenco, and Ventanas’ band members are from across the globe. Together, and in true Canadian fashion, they intertwine their musical cultures to create an all-encompassing world of their own in which they lead audiences down the less travelled paths of the Mediterranean, mixing in contemporary interpretations of ancient ballads, original compositions and new choreographies, inviting audiences of all backgrounds into their lives and music. Throughout the pandemic, Ventanas served as the house band for the new performing arts organisation, FabCollab and the Women in Song series, collaborating with primarily BIPOC world class women artists such as Tara Moneka (Iraq), Eliana Cuevas (Venezuela), OKAN (Cuba), Aline Morales (Brazil), Maryem Tollar (Egypt), Kaeja d’Dance (Canada), Dimitra Kahrimanidis (Greece), Nastasia Y (Ukraine) and others, in iconic Toronto venues such as Koerner Hall, the Aga Khan Museum and Lula Lounge. Winter Waves: Kelly McMichael (Indie Pop/Rock) | St Patrick's Church Museum

May 14, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
The Rocks
Concerts
Classical
Kelly McMichael is a multi-instrumentalist who can sling a guitar, serenade on piano and program beats in equal measure. Kelly’s early songwriting career was established in Ontario around 2007 through DIY feminist electronic synth bands Rouge, and later on, Renders. Her interests cover a broad range of pop/rock production styles combining retro and futuristic sounds in service of commanding vocals and well-crafted songwriting. After a decade as a side player, McMichael’s independent debut LP Waves had a breakthrough in 2021, garnering a spot on the Polaris Prize shortlist, three Music NL Awards, and the ECMA for Best Rock Recording. Kelly’s sophomore album is a genreless expansion on the classic sound of her debut. Recorded and co-produced with Jake Nicoll, this music sits in the comfort of its core ideas while being utterly unafraid to try new things, including McMichael doing much of the recording herself. It plays exactly how its maker intended. “I write and record in a way that you’re just giving the song what it needs. Why limit the creativity? I don’t want limitations.” Information Source: CBRM Recreation | eventbrite
