Discover the remarkable recovery of the peregrine falcon in Canada and the dedicated efforts to ensure its survival in Alberta. The Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association (SPFGA) is excited to present the SPFGA Naturalist Series - Return of the Peregrine, a collection of educational sessions designed to promote nature awareness and conservation advocacy. Throughout 2024, the SPFGA will host monthly sessions led by knowledgeable naturalists who will delve into the captivating world of native wildlife and ecosystems. These sessions aim to foster a deeper connection with nature and foster a greater appreciation for Alberta's natural heritage.
In our upcoming March session, we are privileged to have Gordon Court, the Provincial Wildlife Status Biologist for Alberta Environment and Parks and Protected Areas, as our esteemed presenter. With over four decades of experience in studying and protecting peregrine falcons, Gordon Court is a globally recognized expert on this magnificent species. He will explore the history of the peregrine falcon in Canada, highlighting the challenges it faced due to organochlorine pesticide pollutants. Additionally, he will discuss the steps taken to restore the population and the ongoing projects in place to ensure their vitality in Alberta.
Join us on St. Patrick's Day as we celebrate the astounding recovery of Peregrine Falcon populations in Canada. After Gordon's informative presentation, participants will have the opportunity to assemble Northern Saw-whet Owl nest boxes, contributing to the conservation efforts at our Ketchamoot Creek Recreation Property. Please note that attendees must be 15 years old or accompanied by an adult. Refreshments will be provided, and the event will proceed regardless of weather conditions, as it is indoors.
