WHAT IS EXPROSÉ?Exprosé will be a space for poets and writers to commune with featured guests and witness these artists peel the layers of metaphors and similes away from their pieces. The title comes from a combination of exposé and prose. This showcase also includes the opportunity for attendees to write draft pieces inspired by what they heard, with the option to share their work at the mic in front of their peers. The three prompts given, inspired by lines from the showcase, are each slated to have 10 minutes of writing time available. There are no limitations on the number of pieces written in this period as long as attendees use this time to write. At the end of the writing section, the host will read one of the pieces they wrote during that time and encourage those comfortable with public speaking to do the same. By the end of this series, my only hope is that someone has a poem they're excited they wrote, a featured poet's confidence in their work increases and the connections between Mississauga's local poetry community are both created anew and reinforced to be stronger than before. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Through intuitive, tenuously articulated works, the four artists brought together in this exhibition reflect upon how we situate ourselves in relation to various planes of interconnection and existence. Works by Ella Gonzales, David Merritt, Émilie Régnier, and Shanie Tomassini share a preoccupation with exploring the entangled and complex realm of perception between people and their surroundings. Their artistic practices reflect distinctive cultural backgrounds and experiences, yet they are all deeply invested in developing materially-sensitive works that are finely attuned to introspective realms. A structural emphasis comes through in Ella Gonzales’s use of gossamer, plant-based textiles as surfaces for depicting layers of rooms and corridors in ways that reflect how our bodies move through and remember the spaces we inhabit. Émilie Régnier’s practice is deeply personal: she conveys the unfixed sense of her cultural identity through self-portraits made with traditional handmade cotton textiles, which embrace frayed edges and silhouetted forms. Shanie Tomassini’s sculptures are built of elemental materials that explore aspects of ritualistic and regenerative alchemy. And David Merritt works from tree-based materials such as paper and twigs to articulate delicate configurations that are conceptually retethered to their natural origins. These artists’ evocative sense of materiality draws attention to unfixed, peripheral, and fragile experiences.
