A Very Modern Classical Evening at The Picnic House | The Picnic House in Prospect Park

Dec 17–Dec 18, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Arts
Theater
Brooklyn's favorite free theater, Molière in the Park is back with a staged reading of Le'Asha Julius' new play The Regulars + Molière's The Ludicrous Ladies at Prospect Park's Picnic House! Pairing The Regulars, a short tragedy in verse by rapper, actor, and playwright Le’Asha Julius withThe Ludicrous Ladies, a one act comedy in prose by Molière might appear at first as an exercise in contrast. New versus old, serious versus farcical, political versus domestic… but in content and in form the plays, of course, are neither fully one nor the other. More importantly, despite the time and space that separates their authors, both plays center two impassioned women with complex desires. Desires they fight for, and that may or may not be born exclusively out of the limitations imposed on them by their place in the world. Will this pairing open up an angle of reflection on women’s struggles and how they’ve evolved or persisted? We hope you’ll join us to find out! - Lucie Tiberghien As a classically trained thespian who discovered her musical talents in acting school, Molière has always stood out to me for his brilliant use of language and fun characters. As I began to create more music, I learned the value of storytelling through verse, a skill that affected me mostly through hip-hop and Molière. Almost two years ago, while living in my van traveling back and forth between New York and Washington D.C., due to my teaching schedule, I was inspired to write a story based on forbidden love and challenged myself to use language in a classically heightened style. Out birthed The Regulars, a story of lovers separated by animosity and bloodshed, obstacles that we are still battling today. - Le'Asha Julius WHEN: Tuesday, December 17th, 7PM (Doors will open at 6:30) WHERE: The Picnic House (40 West Dr, Brooklyn, NY) FREE to attend with RSVP Performance runtime: 90 minutes, no intermission Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase Cast To be announced The Regulars directed by Le'Asha Julius The Ludicrous Ladies directed by Lucie Tiberghien, translation by Maya Slater Molière in the Park Since 2019,Molière in the Park has been creating opportunities for Brooklynites to experience world class theater right in their borough - and at no cost. Over the past 3 years of programming, over 15,000 Brooklynites have seen one of our shows. Le'Asha Julius Le'Asha Julius is an actress from Washington D.C., known for her role as Wendy in HBO's Random Acts of Flyness and Jasmine in Still Here which premiered at The Sundance Film Festival. Le'Asha has worked with The Public Theater, The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, Howard University, and Carnegie Hall among many others. In her free time, she's a rapper/ songwriter and has performed at Black Thought's School of Thought and has opened for several artists including Kendrick Lamar, Salt 'n' Peppa, Noname, and Talib Kweli. Le'Asha is currently the first year acting teacher at SUNY Purchase's Conservatory of Acting BFA program. Molière Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Molière, was a French playwright, actor, and poet, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language and world literature. Molière’s plays capture Brooklyn both in style and content: funny, gritty, progressive, disruptive, and embracing of all types of people. Through the lens of his stories, we see ourselves and others as imperfect and intertwined humans. Produced by Molière in the Park, in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance and The Brooklyn Public Library. Jean Strouse on John Singer Sargent and the Werthheimers, with Michael Wood Tuesday, December 17, 6:30 pm the Skylight Room, the Graduate Center 365 5th Ave., New York, NY 10016 Jean Strouse’s Family Romance: John Singer Sargent and the Wertheimers looks at twelve portraits of one English family painted by the expatriate American artist at the height of his career―and at the intersections of all these lives with the sparkle and strife of the Edwardian age. In commissioning this grand series of paintings, Asher Wertheimer, an eminent London art dealer of German-Jewish descent, became Sargent’s greatest private patron and close friend. The Wertheimers worked with Rothschilds and royals, plutocrats and dukes―as did Sargent. Asher left most of his Sargent portraits to the National Gallery in London, a gift that elicited censure as well as praise: it was a new thing for a family of Jews to appear alongside the Anglo-Saxon aristocrats and dignitaries painted by earlier masters. Strouse’s account, set primarily in England around the turn of the twentieth century, takes in the declining fortunes of the British aristocracy and the dramatic rise of new power and wealth on both sides of the Atlantic. It travels back through hundreds of years to the Habsburg court in Vienna and forward to fascist Italy in the 1930s. Its depictions of Sargent, his sitters, their friendships and circles, and the portraits themselves light up a period that saw tumultuous social change and the birth of the modern art market. Sargent brilliantly portrayed these transformations, in which the Wertheimers were key players. Family Romance brings their interwoven stories fully to life for the first time. Jean Strouse is the author of Morgan, American Financier, and Alice James, A Biography, which won the Bancroft Prize in American History. Her essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. From 2003 to 2017, she served as Director of the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at The New York Public Library. Her new book, Family Romance: John Singer Sargent and the Wertheimers, will be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in November 2024. Michael Woodstudied French and German at Cambridge University and was a fellow of St John’s College. He taught at Columbia, Exeter and Princeton, where he is now Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature. He has written books on Stendhal, Nabokov, Yeats, and Hitchcock, and is the author, most recently, of On Empson (2017), The Habits of Distraction (2018), and Marcel Proust (2023). He writes regularly for the London Review of Books, and for several other journals. Information Source: The Leon Levy Center for Biography | eventbrite

What is Kut-Sür? In this immersive ceremonial sound journey, Snow Raven will weave her traditional songs with the sounds of birds and animals to guide participants through the three worlds. The northern people of Sakha follow the traditional faith “Aiyy” (Creation), which divides the world into three parts: the Upper (gods and deities), the Middle (people, insects, plants, birds, animals), and the Lower (negatives of human life). Snow Raven will teach the audience traditional singing techniques and dance movements, helping participants experience a true journey through the three worlds from the Shamanic lens of Sakha tradition. Human development is governed by “Kut-Sür,” where “Kut” means soul and “Sür” refers to energy and vibration. According to traditional Sakha belief, the human soul (kut) is comprised of three parts: Iie Kut - Mother SoulBuor Kut - Earth SoulSalgyn Kut - Air SoulThe Sakha people believe that the three Kuts must stay in balance; if one becomes weak, it can lead to illness. In this ceremonial concert, individuals will have the opportunity to journey within themselves, restoring balance and harmony to their soul. Ceremony Structure 1. Salgyn Kut (Air Soul) - Inward Journey This first part focuses on introspection and self-exploration. Participants will be guided through their inner worlds, navigating thoughts, emotions, and the layers of the mind. It’s a time to unlayer and explore the darkness and masks we wear, using sound as a guide to delve into our internal landscapes. 2. Iie Kut (Mother Soul) - Ancestral Connection In the second part, we call upon our ancestors and connect with the primal aspects of our being. This phase takes us back to a primordial state, beyond human language, where we communicate through the sounds of birds and animals. Participants will tap into primal sounds, revisiting the metaphorical womb, and experiencing a release of deep-seated emotions through crying and other expressions. This journey leads to a breakthrough moment, transitioning from inward exploration to connecting with the unseen worlds. We will access our genetic heritage, latent talents, inner voice, and the voices of our ancestors. This phase strengthens our connection to our lineage and the wisdom it carries. 3. Buor Kut (Earth Soul) - Integration and Grounding The final part brings participants back to their bodies, grounding them in the physical world. Buor means soil, symbolizing our connection to the earth. This phase is about integrating the insights and skills gained during the journey, awakening our abilities and learning how to use them in our daily lives. Participants will engage in breathing and walking exercises, dance, and singing. This physical engagement helps translate the inner journey into tangible actions and inspirations for everyday life. As a community, we will chant together, move energy in unison, tapping into primordial strength, and rediscovering who we are as individuals and as a collective. We will end with a collective community song, a symbol of our shared journey and newfound connections. SNOW RAVEN - SUOR was born in one of the most remote and cold inhabited places in the world - the Republic of Sakha - Yakutia (arctic Siberia). She was three years old when she started to learn the language of birds and animals. Her voice takes its breath from traditional Sakha culture and is truly an instrument. She is the OG of “arctic beatbox” - the reindeer breath and the founder of OLOX ecosystem: Of Many Believes Common Truth. Information Source: Ecstatic Dance NYC | eventbrite
