FILM: The Stimming Pool / A Brief History of Circles including director Q&A | Full of Noises
Nov 17, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Barrow-in-Furness
We are showing two films on Sunday 17 November made by autistic filmmakers. Also take part in a Q&A with co-director Georgia Bradburn who worked on both features. The screening is in collaboration with Autus Cumbria. All ticket sales will be donated to Autus to support their services. Autus supports autistic children and adults by offering social opportunities, support, training and advocacy. Films: The Stimming Pool (1hr 10 mins) The Stimming Pool is an experimental and sometimes magical hybrid film whose drifting form is built around the concept of an autistic camera. The curiosity of this camera discovers a relay of subjects who stray through the world, revealing environments often hostile to autistic experience - such as a hectic workplace and a crowded pub - and quiet spaces that offer respite from them. Sometimes the camera wanders off without any guide, finding an ancient woodland, an abandoned testing centre, even a fragment from an animated zombie film set in the American civil war… Each of the characters exists in a separate world nested inside one other and often jumping up and down levels. But gradually we come to realise they have common experiences. Some are concealing their autism and dealing with the resulting feelings of isolation, while others thrive in the communities and support structures around them. All, however, have a shared objective: to find a place where they are free to move and stim, uninhibited by the tests and restrictions of normative society. This secret place is the Stimming Pool… Directors: Georgia Bradburn, Robin Elliot-Knowles, Benjamin Brown, Sam Chown Ahern, Lucy Walker, Steven Eastwood. A Brief History of Circles (11 mins) An experimental video essay which uses circles and waves to explore neurodivergent experience. Filmmaker: Georgia Bradburn Timings: Sunday 17 November. 2pm doors. 2:30pm films start. Access information for the screening: If you have any access requirements please email sophie@fonfestival.org Relaxed screening: This event will run as a relaxed screening which means that you are free to get up and leave to go to the quiet space / have a break / stim / do anything else that makes you feel comfortable. Quiet space: We will have a dedicated quiet space during the event. The location of which will be described at the beginning of the screening event. The space has comfy seats, customisable lighting levels, board games and sensory toys. We also have noise cancelling headphones available to borrow upon entry. Advance visits to Piel View House: If this is your first time to the venue and you are nervous about attending you can arrange to come and see the venue prior to the event to get used to it.
