Located in the Horsethief Lake section of the Columbia Hills Historical State Park is a National Historic Site. Free, guided tours of the pictographs and petroglyphs, including the significant Tsagaglalal ( She Who Watches ), are offered. See registration information below. The tour is typically 1.5 hours long and a .75-mile round trip. While generally not strenuous, the hike does include sections of rough rock at substantial grade. There are no benches or other places to sit and guests are not permitted to leave the trail. To ensure safety against natural hazards, visitors must follow the directions of the guide. Expect hot, often windy conditions during summer tours. Bring extra water to carry on the hike. If you have health concerns, please consider coming in the fall when it is cooler. Walking sticks and hats are always recommended, as are provisions for windy or wet conditions in the fall. It is important to drink water (pre-hydrate) before participating in the tour. Water you drink during the tour takes 30 to 60 minutes to absorb and is simply replacing water you lose during the walk. Wearing brimmed hats and using plenty of sunscreen are recommended for sun protection as there are no trees nor shade available on the tour. Wear sturdy shoes as the trail surface is rough and uneven. Binoculars can be helpful to some people. No pets are allowed. Registration I nformation*Each person must register on-line for a tour and receive a ticket via email.* all tours are 9 a.m. on Fridays - Saturdays ONLY, April through October; This area is otherwise closed to the public. Reservations are required, but tours are free. Discover pass (annual or day use) is required for parking. Day use passes can be purchased on arrival at the self-pay kiosk in the parking lot with cash or check for $10. Public Tours are limited to 20 people. It is advisable to reserve several weeks in advance as tours fill up fast. Please click in your confirmation email to cancel reservations if you cannot make it, to open up spots for others wishing to reserve. For large groups of 20-40 , call the park office at (509) 773-3145, and press option 7, at least a month in advance. Please leave a detailed message with your name, phone number, email, party size, the requested dates for Fri/Sat tours only. Staff strive to respond to messages as promptly as possible but may take a few days to reply. Large group tours are not guaranteed and dependent on demand and staff availability.
