FAT CLUB GOES SWIMMING | St Luke's Swimming Pool

Jan 29, 2025 (UTC+0)
Terrace
Sports & Fitness
WHY SWIMMING So many fats love to swim but don’t always feel like it’s something they can participate in in the freeing way they should be able to. Here at Fat Club we LOVE swimming and we LOVE hanging out with fat people so, this was a no brainer for us. WHAT TO EXPECT Someone from Fat Club will be on hand to greet you and answer your questions. Please show your ticket to get access.Sessions are 45 mins only. Please turn up on time to make the most of the swimming and please leave the pool with plenty of time to get changed and leave the premises before our booking ends. You can then expect 45 mins where you can swim and splash about to your heart's content. All swimmers must abide by the swimming pool rules.WHO CAN COME This is a FAT ONLY SPACE*. We wanted to use this funding to make sure that fat people can have fun and feel the benefit of fat only spaces. We have complied access info in this doc, if you have any questions, please let us know. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uHK8HdvFqKzI7IIuNjKkHk7UnnL6S2wDmgHrwWGGETg/edit?usp=sharing For anyone that attends, we expect that you behave in line with our community guidelines: Fat Club is for people who identify as Fat - what counts as fat varies from culture to culture, meaning that different sized people may have similar experiences. However, we remind everyone that the experience of weight stigma increases with size and that larger fats may have experiences of oppression that differ from those in bodies closer to the social normsBe aware of your privilege - Try to understand how other experiences my differ from yours. For instance, smaller fat people should be aware of the way their experiences differ from larger fat people and consider their relative privilege in conversations and decision makingNo diet or intentional weight loss talk - We understand that you may choose to lose weight, however, you must not speak about dieting or intentional weight loss in Fat Club spaces. There may be occasions where people need to discuss feelings about unintentional weight loss, and in these circumstances the community will make a decision about how and where that might be heldNo numbers - weights and measurements, even where not discussed in a weight-loss context can be difficult for other people in the group. Clothe sizes are OK where the context is neutral, like asking for recommendations or at clothes swaps. Not everyone can, will, or wants to ‘love themselves’ or be ‘beautiful’ - please try to remember that not everyone values or welcomes appearance based compliments: ask permission first.Try your best not to f*ck other people up - we are all flawed, and we are learning. We accept that people will make mistakes. By trying to not f*ck each other up and keeping to the community expectations, we hope to minimise harm to each other. We expect people who f*ck up to listen to feedback.*Anyone who is needed to support a Fat person’s access to this event is welcome. We just ask that they understand they are here to support Fat access, not to participate and to be aware that this is a Fat First Space. WHO ARE FAT CLUB? Fat Club Brighton is a community of fats who are interested in the joy and liberation of fat people. We run free or low cost events for fats and friends of fats across Brighton and Hove. To learn more about us, visit our instagram page or talk to one of us at an event. Information Source: Fat BTN | eventbrite

Comedy
Nick Capper is a cult favourite on the Australian comedy circuit, having toured across the country, and has cemented himself as a regular in the festival scene. Self described as Australia’s favourite agricultural comedian, Nick’s oddball antics and off-kilter musings make him stand out from the pack, as he blends his country farm upbringing with absurd and surreal comic delivery. ‘A master of the unexpected, Nick Capper’s punchlines sneak up on you every time.’ - Beat Magazine You ever seen a man’s brain backfire like a Datsun 120Y on stage? Because that’s what Jack Knight’s comedy is; a deranged soup-drinking maniac in the middle of a perpetual mental hoo-roo. Having supported the likes of Mel Buttle, Sam Campbell, and Dan Rath, Jack Knight has cemented himself early into cult comedian status, and is admired amongst his peers as one of Australian comedy’s most unique emerging voices. Catch him on stage before he drives a Ford Falcon into the Barrier Reef and is never seen again. Information Source: Good Chat Comedy Club | eventbrite

Some of us live in cities so we can be alone curated by Gabriel CautainHypha Gallery Hackney Downs, 17 Amhurst Terrace, E8 PV: Thursday, 9th January, 6-9pm Kindly supported by @ in partnership with @hyphastudios At the heart of the bustle of urban landscapes lies an exploration of solitude and its nuances. Some of us live in cities so we can be alone is a reflection on our relationships with others — on ourselves amidst others. Evoking the remnants of what once was, or what could have been, this exhibition alludes to the other without explicitly showing it. Taking its title from David Wojnarowicz’s memoir ‘Close to the knives’, this exhibition aims to be like a closed space at the center of cities, like an opening onto intertwining individual stories where one oscillates between tenderness and violence. It is an immersion into landscapes that are both vast and intimate, where the artworks serve as tangible remnants of desires and exchanges, revealing the intricate tapestries of personal narratives. These reminders of what has been, or could have been, also indicate what now is: an unveiling of intimacy — between personal desires, chance encounters, and social exchanges. What remains after the agitation has dissipated, after emotions have calmed? Some of us live in cities so we can be alone reveals the traces left by our desires and encounters, serving as a reflection on our solitudes, whether endured or sought. artistsKamalishe Hiraldo Ines Michelotto Murphy Johnson Andrew Kernan Gabriel Cautain Open: 10th January – 1st February 2025, Thursday – Sunday, 12-6pm Information Source: Hypha Studios | eventbrite

Book launch of 'The Shores of Vaikus' (2024) by Philip GrossPhilip Gross in conversation with an Estonian writer Kai AareleidBook signingPlease note that ENTRANCE to the event is ONLY allowed upon presentation of photo ID and a confirmed FREE e-ticket. *** In the course of forty years an increasingly subtle conversation has evolved between words and silence at the core of Philip Gross's poetry. This is never more so than in the poems of this edgy homage to Estonia, the country of his refugee father’s birth. At this collection’s heart, the shapeshifting prose-poem monologues of Evi And The Devil weave a haunted landscape out of folktale, dark humour, the routine atrocities of history and a vividly present sense of place. The Shores of Vaikus (Bloodaxe Books, 2024) is Philip Gross’s 28th book of poetry, and his 13th from Bloodaxe, following The Thirteenth Angel (2022), which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. *** Kai Aareleid is an Estonian author and translator sharing her life between Tallinn, Helsinki, London and travelling the world (and books). She has translated works by Bruce Chatwin, Javier Marías, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Enrique Vila-Matas, Roberto Bolaño, Isabel Allende and Jorge Luis Borges among others. Her own novels are about memory and roots, family bonds, secrets and silences. She is known for her sparse and aquarellic style; short, miniature-like chapters, and her special relationship to photography, food and cityspaces, both past and present. She has won numerous literary prizes and her works have been translated into several languages. Information Source: Estonian Embassy in London | eventbrite

John Byrne is the contemporary visual equivalent to the poet in ancient Irish society who used sharp wit to expose hypocrisy, mediocrity and pretentiousness. His approach varies from performance to film to tableau re-enactment and he has used all of these very effectively to undermine prejudice and stereotype. Catherine Marshall, Irish Times John was born in Belfast, He went to the art college there before attending the Slade School in London (1984-86) and has been living and working in Dublin since 1996. He’s responsible for a number of high profile public art works including Dublin’s Last Supper 2004, Misneach 2010, a monumental equestrian sculpture in Ballymun.
