The 3 Day Winter Skills Course in Aviemore is a comprehensive program designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practice necessary to safely navigate and enjoy walking in the winter mountains. Led by experienced guide Lee from Not About The Summit, this course is ideal for those who are new to using crampons and ice axes or for those who have prior winter walking experience and are seeking additional guidance and reassurance. Over the course of three days, participants will cover a wide range of topics and skills, including movement on ice and snow, avalanche awareness and planning, navigation in low visibility and whiteout conditions, emergency procedures and shelter building, as well as efficient group management and route selection. The course will also include valuable information on winter kit, including clothing, packing, and food and drinks. The program will begin with a meet-up at Tiso Aviemore Outdoor Experience, where participants will review forecasts and perform kit checks. Each day will involve a journey with ascent, requiring participants to be fit enough to walk for six hours with 600m of ascent for two consecutive days. The course will culminate with a climb of one or two Munros, providing an opportunity to put newly acquired skills and navigation techniques into practice. To participate in the course, it is recommended that participants already have experience hiking in hills or mountains during summer conditions. While there is no requirement to have prior experience with ice axes or crampons, all necessary equipment, including a helmet, ice axe, crampons, and suitable boots, will be required. Helmet hire is available at Tiso Aviemore. Please note that there is a minimum booking requirement of two participants for the event to proceed.
