Join us for a special event with bestselling author and Rolling Stone columnist, Rob Sheffield! His latest book, Heartbreak Is the National Anthem, dives deep into the magic, heartbreak, and artistry of Taylor Swift’s music. Trust us when we say this is the event for any die-hard Taylor fan who loves to dissect lyrics, talk album eras, and celebrate every iconic moment. The first 250 guests to purchase tickets will have the option to attend an exclusive author talk and interactive Q&A with Rob, followed by a meet & greet. Remaining tickets will be for the meet & greet line only. Tickets will include a signed copy of Heartbreak is the National Anthem. Whether you’ve been a Swiftie since the debut album or are loving every minute of the Eras Tour, this event is perfect for anyone who has ever sung along to a Taylor anthem. We can't wait to see you there! An intimate look at the life and music of modern pop's most legendary figure, Taylor Swift, from leading music journalist Rob Sheffield. A cultural phenomenon. A worldwide obsession. An agent of emotional chaos. There's no parallel to Taylor Swift in history: a teenage girl who turns into the world's favorite pop star, songwriter, storyteller, guitar hero, live performer, changing how music is made and heard. An all-time great on the level of The Beatles, Prince, or David Bowie. Heartbreak Is the National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music is the first book that goes deep on the musical and cultural impact of Taylor Swift. Nobody can tell the story like Rob Sheffield, the bestselling and award-winning author of Dreaming the Beatles, On Bowie, and Love Is a Mix Tape. The legendary Rolling Stone journalist is the writer who has chronicled Taylor for every step of her long career, from her early days to the Eras Tour. Sheffield gets right to the heart of Swift and her music, her lyrics, her fan connection, her raw power. At once one of the most beloved music figures of the past two decades and one of the most criticized, Taylor Swift is known as much for her life beyond her music as she is for her hits--the most public of stars, yet also the weirdest and most mysterious. In the tradition of Sheffield's Dreaming the Beatles, Heartbreak Is the National Anthem will inform and delight a legion of fans who hang on every word from Taylor and every word Rob writes on her. Rob Sheffield is a columnist for Rolling Stone, where he has been writing about music, TV, and pop culture since 1997. He is the author of the national bestsellers Love Is a Mix Tape: Love and Loss, One Song at a Time; Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut; Turn Around Bright Eyes: The Rituals of Love & Karaoke: On Bowie; and Dreaming the Beatles: The Love Story of One Band and the Whole World. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Nov 27, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
Join artist Eelyn Lee and writer-researcher Dr Yen Ooi for an illustrated discussion about their ongoing collaboration – a call and response creative dialogue between artist and writer. You’ll hear about how both draw on migratory energies and ancestral stories, producing work that creates new orientations, shaped by East and Southeast Asian diasporic experiences. In 2023 Eelyn invited Yen to make a written response to her exhibition, Four Quadrants of the Sky 四大神獸 , an immersive video installation reimagining ESEA identities through the creation of four new mythological characters. In Yen’s short story response, The Temple, Sheffield becomes Sharefield, where the smell of jasmine fills the streets, and the gallery is a portal to another time and place. This year, Yen has written, Three Constellations, a series of poems in response to Eelyn’s, Saam Sing 三星, a moving image work, currently on display at Graves Gallery. The event will take place in the gallery with an opportunity to view Saam Sing 三星 and watch extracts from Four Quadrants of the Sky 四大神獸. She has shown work at Barbican, Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Site Gallery, Bloc Projects, Palais de Tokyo, and at international film festivals. Bobby Baker: Drawing on a (Grand)mother’s Experience | Millennium Gallery
Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
Originally intended as a one-off performance work to make sense of the first eight years of motherhood, Bobby Baker’s Drawing on a Mother’s Experience (1988) gained widespread critical acclaim and went on to be shown multiple times over the next 12 years. Having learned caution as a mother and the ability to think ahead, the performance sites Baker as a meticulously prepared action painter, who has substituted oil paint and canvas for a double bed sheet and various foodstuffs. Poking fun at her male predecessors (artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and others) Baker’s revelatory commentary interrogates domesticity, motherhood and the role of the artist, using each ingredient to represent a specific event or episode in her recent personal history. In 2015, the artist revisited the work and devised an updated version: Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience (DOGME). This was first performed at WOW – Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre in 2015, following an invitation to re-stage Drawing on a Mother’s Experience. By then, a grandmother and as dedicated a feminist as ever, Baker chose to instead bring her original performance up to date. DOGME explores the experience of early motherhood from the more reflective vantage point of age and experience while considering the ongoing challenge of combining motherhood and parental responsibilities with the drive to retain autonomy. For this event, in conjunction with the Acts of Creation exhibition, a film version of DOGME will be screened, followed by a talk by the artist. Image Credit: Bobby Baker, Drawing on a (Grand) Mother's Experience, performed at Women of the World Festival, Southbank Centre, 2015. Photo: Belinda Lawley “Bobby Baker has rightly received plaudits around the world throughout her career for her originality, artistic courage and integrity. Like other great artists/authors she has constantly and candidly looped her own life experience into challenging and audacious performance pieces that entertain and liberate conversation around taboo subjects.”
Jude Kelly CBE, CEO and Founder of WOW – Women of the World Foundation, and former Artistic Director, Southbank Centre. Bobby Baker's acclaimed intersectional feminist practice includes performance, drawing, and installation, and persistently exposes the undervalued and stigmatised aspects of women’s daily lives, exemplified by pioneering works such as Drawing on a Mother’s Experience (1988) and Kitchen Show (1991), which was recently acquired by the Arts Council Collection. Born in 1950 in Kent, UK, she graduated from Painting at St. Martins School of Art (1972, now Central St Martins) and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Queen Mary University London. Performances and installations include An Edible Family in a Mobile Home (1976) remade in 2023 as part of Women in Revolt! P4C gets you thinking creatively, critically, collaboratively and with care; thinking and talking together to delve into ideas more deeply. All welcome, no experience required. “I love, love, love the respectful conversations and the insights, and challenges that arise.” Previous participant (Sheffield Year of Reading) Facilitator Rosie Carnall has years of experience in P4C and loves getting people to think, talk, and listen together. Lino Printing Cards and Gifts Workshop | Kelham Island Arts Collective
Nov 30, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
Join me in my art studio to have some fun learning how to design, cut out and print a set of greetings cards or art prints using lino printing. You will be invited to draw an animal of your choice from a picture, then inspired to complete the design with patterns and motifs. If you have another idea for a design that's fine too, I'll guide you to adapt it into a lino cut. You'll have use of all the materials and equipment required to make your own set of A6 sized cards or A5 art prints (or a mixture) to give to people for Christmas or other occasions. You will leave with the knowledge of how to create a lino print, your cards/prints and your lino cut which you can re use. Essential Info: Pre-booking is essential and spaces are limited to 8, book early to avoid disappointment. There will be teas, coffee and biscuits available. Feel free to bring your own snacks. Suitable for any experience level, you'll be taught everything you need to know. This activity requires a steady hand and manual dexterity so certain conditions/disabilities may affect your ability to take part. Contact me if you are unsure. Sorry, there is no step free access to the studio. If you have any other questions about accessibility please contact me and I will do my best to accomodate you. Age 16+
