Fine Art
Join us for a curator-led tour of this survey of current Iranian photography. AZPA members will have the opportunity to view this two-year dedicated effort on the Tasvir Archive from the co-curators Sara Abbaspour and Mehrdad Mirzaie in bringing this inaugural exhibition to the public. View the work of 60 artists who identify as Iranian from 8 countries. The exhibition at Northlight Gallery will introduce this research archive, highlighting its significant contributions to the field. In addition, a complementary exhibition is taking place at Step Gallery, in collaboration with Tavaali Publications and Dastras Photo Book Platform. This parallel exhibit will explore the interplay between photography and the evolving medium of photobooks, emphasizing the role of narrative in Iranian image-based art. Together, these exhibitions expand the discourse initiated by the Tasvir Archive. This project was able to happen with the guidance and generous support of Liz Allen and Cecilia Fajardo-Hill. This event is free for AZPA members. Not a member yet, but want to attend? See membership options here. Image: Northlight Gallery About the Curators Mehrdad Mirzaie, an Iranian multidisciplinary artist now residing in the United States, centers his endeavors on the image-based medium, particularly emphasizing the reinterpretation of historical imagery and the interplay between bygone eras and contemporary contexts. His practice is marked by an exploration of the inherent potency of images as conduits for conveying historical narratives. His fervent interest in archives, image analysis, and alternative artistic processes leads him to delve into the intricate relationship between history and storytelling. Mirzaie's pursuits extend to a focused exploration of the history of Iranian photography alongside his artistic endeavors. Engaging as a curatorial assistant at the Northlight Gallery, he delves into researching the historical aspects of photography in Iran. Presently, he is immersed in pursuing an MFA in photography at Arizona State University. Sara Abbaspour is an Iranian artist and teacher who lives and works between the U.S. and Iran. She holds an MFA in Photography from Yale School of Art, an MA in Photography from the University of Tehran, and a BSc. in Urban Planning and Design from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Abbaspour draws on influences from her background in urban studies. While embracing a herstorical approach, her photographs often seem timeless and placeless. She explores the relationship between spaces and their inhabitants in their constant state of becoming, collaborates with these elements, and often considers these photographs self-portraits. Her work exists in a meeting point between temporal and eternal, inside and out, familiar and peculiar, personal and political, seen and unseen, magic and mundane, imagined and experienced. Sara is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of New Mexico. ________________________________ IMPORTANT INFORMATION: By registering for this event, you agree to hold harmless Arizona Photography Alliance (AZPA), its board, officers and members, and the event hosts, from any occurrence that might happen during the event. In the run up to their new joint exhibition We Are Ocean at Granton Station, the artists are inviting you to a talk about their current practice and what inspires their work. Alison Grant is a visual artist and community facilitator based in Edinburgh, her work explores ways to create space for contemplation, introspection, connection and dialogue with our home and our place and relationships with the ecosystems that sustain us. Recent projects include 11,000 miles an Ocean facing research project supported by a Creative Scotland Award and Drawing Down the Sun a community model for climate agency and creativity. Previous solo exhibitions include Stone Moon a collaboration with poet Fiona Sampson MBE shown at the Scottish Poetry Library and the Wigtown Book Festival in 2022. No Ruined Stones shown in Wiltshire and online in the virtual Art North Exhibition 2020 and The Shape of Time and Suspended Shadows shown with the Warburton Gallery Edinburgh. Tokes Sharif handcrafts sculptural and functional objects using clay incorporating local and foraged materials. Each piece is mindfully fashioned, in small batches, into iconic and timeless forms influenced by archeology and nature. The use of a limited palette of neutral and earthy tones coupled with stony and matte textures draws inspiration from Scottish landscapes. This deliberate choice of aesthetics is to allow a deeper and reflective connection to nature anchored through the practical use of the pieces and thus enhancing the wellbeing of the recipient.
