Short Course - 21st Century Maker with Ian Berrill | Hereford College of Arts

Course Overview The aim of this course is to introduce you to the exciting and limitless possibilities of a modern 3D workshop. You can explore processes including laser etching and cutting, digital vinyl cutting, sand blasting and colour heat transfer, whilst working with a variety of materials including wood, metal, plastic, resins and jesmonite. You will be encouraged to explore hi-tech and low tech processes to create an array of one off decorative items for your home such as clocks, mirrors, coasters and more. Basic materials are supplied to get you started. You will be advised accordingly of any additional materials required depending on what you would personally like to achieve. Venue, Dates, Times Term starts on 8th October. There will be 10 sessions, and there will be a half term break on the week of 28th October. All session dates listed below: 8th October 15th October 22nd October 5th November 12th November 19th November 26th November 3rd December 10th December 17th December All sessions will be held in the 3D Workshop at our College Road Campus. Course Overview The course will start with basic introductions to the different hand-building techniques you can use and what can be made using these techniques. You will be encouraged to develop your own creative ideas, and to explore the techniques you most enjoy. Once everyone has settled into hand-building with clay, students will be introduced two at a time to throwing on the wheel. This course can offer you the support and guidance you need to progress your ceramics skills & knowledge. Basic materials are supplied to get you started. You will be advised accordingly of any additional materials required depending on what you would personally like to achieve. At the end of the course you should feel confident in your making abilities to progress onto the intermediate level. Venue, Dates, Times Term starts on 8th October. Course Overview This 10 Week course guides students in discovering their unique visual language by equipping them with essential tools for figure drawing. It builds foundational skills through experimentation with line, form, tone, measurement, and basic anatomy. Starting with black, white, and grey using charcoal, chalk, and pencil, students gradually develop their skills before introducing color through pens, pencils, and paint. A couple of weeks push students out of their comfort zones by introducing unconventional tools like pen and ink with twigs, brushes, and collage. A variety of papers, including cartridge, Sugar paper, brown parcel paper, and occasionally newspaper and wallpaper, are used to encourage creativity and freedom in the work. Sessions include short and long poses, with models sometimes using props, fostering a dynamic learning environment for exploring figure drawing and visual expression. Term starts on 8th October. As the course progresses, you'll dive into Lino cutting and reduction, mastering the art of layering colors and patterns. There’s also an opportunity to experiment with Rubber Stamping or revisit techniques you’ve enjoyed. You’ll discover the textural possibilities of Collagraph and the eco-friendly approach of Tetra Pak printing. The course culminates in a mini exhibition, celebrating the unique and diverse prints you've created, offering a fantastic opportunity to showcase your newfound skills and creativity. Course Overview The aim of this course is to develop your knowledge and confidence when working with painted colour. Focusing on acrylic (used both as impasto and water colour) and water-based oils, you will investigate colour, form and different methods of applying paint to a surface in a supportive and dynamic environment. Various limited palettes will offer you a deeper understanding of colour- introducing you to hue, tone and temperature through fun exercises and experiments. By the end of the course, you will have sound advice and experience in still life, landscape, abstract and portrait painting. Suitable for beginners or those wishing to develop their confidence in painting. Basic materials and brushes supplied to get you started, you will be advised accordingly of any additional materials and brushes required depending on what you would personally like to achieve.
