Canton Modern: Art and Visual Culture, 1900s–1970s | M+
Jan 28–Oct 5, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
Canton Modernpresents twentieth-century Cantonese art and visual culture in its full complexity as an important chapter in global modernism. United in a shared linguistic and cultural identity, the southern port cities of Guangzhou (also known as Canton) and Hong Kong were historically marginal in China. The birthplace of revolution, the two cities gave rise to a distinctive visual and artistic modernism, one shaped by cross-cultural interactions and tensions between conservative and progressive artworlds. Cantonese artists broke away from the elegant poetics of classical ink painting to forge a socially oriented realism, depicting subjects ranging from leisure and labour to war and disaster. Working as journalists and publishers, they exploited the immediacy and circulation of print, photography, and cartoons to intervene in and even reform society.

Louise Bourgeois. Soft Landscape | Hauser & Wirth
Mar 25–May 10, 2025 (UTC+8)
Hong Kong
Louise Bourgeois was born in Paris in 1911, moved to New York to work and live in 1938, and died in 2010. Best known for her large-scale sculptures, she is recognized as one of the most important and influential artists of the last century. Louise Bourgeois is generally classified as an Abstract Expressionist artist, but there are also elements of Surrealism and Feminism in her work. She went her own way and was not associated with any art movement in her life.
According to the British TATE Museum, one of the reasons why Louise Bourgeois's works are so powerful is that she suffered childhood trauma, including her mother who had always been sick and died when she was 22 years old. Her father was unfaithful to his wife and had multiple mistresses, which caused great harm to both mother and son. Because of the fear of being abandoned, there is often a theme of fear of abandonment in Louise Bourgeois's works. She was only 3 years old when World War I broke out, and the war had a great impact on her.
Louise Bourgeois's most famous works are her spiders. She began painting as early as 1947. By the 1990s, she created large spider works several stories high. She once said that spider sculptures were the "most successful objects" in her life. She used spiders to represent her mother. In her eyes, spiders are both predators and protectors.
This exhibition is her second solo exhibition in Hong Kong. The exhibition is jointly curated by the gallery and The Easton Foundation. It will present a selection of her works from the 1960s to 2008, including some rarely exhibited sculptures and works on paper. Among them, a three-meter-long fountain installation "Mamelles [fountain]" (1991) and a steel and marble sculpture "Spider" (2000) will be exhibited in Asia for the first time.
Handpan Classes with Sasha Frolov | Red Doors Studio
May 3, 2025 (UTC+8)

HK$1650 class excluding handpan (bring your own preferably D minor scale)
Handpans first hit the streets in 2007 and have rapidly grown in popularity worldwide. Their appeal lies in their ability to blend the sounds of a steel drum with more varied tonal texture and rhythm plus they are easy to carry. Making them a firm favourite of buskers, sound practitioners and musicians. Allow your creativity to flourish as you develop rhythms and learn basic techniques with Sasha. Class is suitable for all ages from rank novices never having touched a handpan to beginners. More advanced training available on request. About Sasha He is a percussionist specialising in handpan. He fell in love with percussive instruments around 15 years ago. African drum Djembe became his first passion. However, over time, he noticed that when he played percussive instruments, he was missing the melody... which is why when he first saw the Handpan, he immediately fell in love with it. He knew this wonderful instrument is exactly what he needed. Handpan is a new age instrument that combines rhythm, melody and harmony at the same time. The emotional and soft sound of this instrument fills the space and creates a harmonious atmosphere, which relaxes people. Playing it requires a creative mind. In my classes, I emphasise feeling on top of music theory. I adapt rigorous percussion technique for playing the handpan, which will be very useful in setting a base of creating any sound you want on this instrument. Sasha has lived in Hong Kong for 5 years. Handpan are his main instrument but he also is proficient in the Indian flute bansuri, didgeridoo and any kind of percussion. He has performed at Open space Jazz fest and with bands including CheeseTata and band Tarboosh. Music is how your feelings sound like!!!
