Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop
Dec 4, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to work on your work in progress. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £5 and include a hot or cold drink. You can buy other drinks to keep you going during the morning. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop manager Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin invovled and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry.

Le Patin Libre | Tim Hortons Iceplex
Dec 8, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Brighton
With unmatched rigor, infectious enthusiasm, and dazzling virtuosity, the 15 artists of Le Patin Libre are as swift and dynamic as ever on their skates. Together, they transform into a mesmerizing flock of birds, soaring through breathtaking, high-speed choreography that leaves the audience spellbound. This is skating at its most exhilarating—dizzying, daring, and utterly captivating. This new show is a human transposition of the murmurations of flocks of birds. Uniquely made possible by the fluidity and speed of glide, the show was created using complex algorithms enriched with choreographic intentions. Just like the starlings’ hallucinating aerial ballets, Murmuration exceeds what an individual brain can imagine or comprehend. Taking this choreographic object through an epic but abstract journey, the skaters explore the dynamic interactions of an harmonious, exhilarating but sometimes dangerous togetherness. An adrenaline rush for the whole family! Founded in 2005 by competitive skaters looking to break free from the world of sparkles and medals, Le Patin Libre reimagines the traditional ice show with a contemporary twist. Their first two works for five skaters, Vertical Influences (2014) and Threshold (2018), received critical acclaim, captivating audiences at art festivals, national stages, and even winter carnivals. Le Patin Libre’s style, defined by speed, virtuosity, and seamless choreography, is both sophisticated and accessible—delighting, provoking, and inspiring in equal measure. Join us December 8th at Tim Hortons Iceplex, Chick-fil-A Arena. FREE at the door with UR Student ID This project is made possible by the UR Program of Dance and Movement and the NYS DanceForce,a partnership program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.
