Come to this workshop to experience how your “limitations” can become your biggest asset. Let’s alchemize what’s holding you back from true PLAY. Led by Florence Friebe. Discover the powerful stories behind Warrior Women as Alice Woodruff discusses her sculpture exhibition in an insightful gallery talk to take place on Thursday, February 20th at 7PM . “Warrior Women” is a magnificent collection of 60 torsos. The exhibit portrays real-life heroines from American history, contemporary life, and women around the world. Each sculpture is accompanied by a written narrative that tells the compelling story of a woman who struggled against unfair and often brutal circumstances. “Warrior Women” is a compelling vehicle for education. The masterful quality of the sculptures, combined with the variety of narratives across time and place, leaves a lasting impression on visitors. This is art with a purpose; beauty with soul. Women in the South - like women around the world and throughout history - faced heartbreaking challenges as they mothered, cooked, cleaned, and labored during and after slavery. Displayed within the historically-accurate surroundings of the Taylor-Grady House, these stunning sculptures and their stories will have a powerful impact. Taylor-Grady House (TGH) is the only National Historic Landmark in Athens. Its vision is to make yesterday an active, relevant part of today by providing a lens into the history of our community - a history that includes all the people who shaped us: farmers, laborers, and merchants; landed gentry; servants and slaves. Join us for a gallery talk with Boyce Clark as he shares his passion for alternative photography—a process that demands patience, precision, and artistry. Discover how these historical techniques challenge him to slow down, embrace unpredictability, and create truly one-of-a-kind prints. Unseen Narratives is a powerful solo exhibition that delves into the complexities of identity, social inequality, and human resilience expressed through alternative process photography. Featuring three distinct series by the artist Boyce Clark, the exhibition explores themes ranging from homelessness and mental health to economic disparity and the untold stories of those living on the fringe. The first series, You Know Me , presents intimate portraits of unhoused individuals from Athens, GA, New Orleans, LA, and Rome, Italy, printed on medication prescription guides using the Van Dyke Brown process, sparking dialogue about the intersection of mental illness and homelessness. Stories Not Told juxtaposes portraits from the Mississippi Delta onto the cold financial pages and vainglorious lifestyle pages of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, revealing the stark divide between wealth and poverty in America. The third series, Unexpected, takes viewers on a journey through experimental techniques with Kallitypes, cyanotypes, and prints on unconventional materials like vintage road maps and instruction manuals, expanding the narrative potential of each image. Together, these series invite reflection on societal narratives often left unseen, urging us to reconsider how we see one another and the world around us.
