Kabuki Legends: Part Two | Oxford
Feb 16, 2024–Feb 23, 2025 (UTC)
Oxford
Japanese artist Takahashi Hiromitsu creates dynamic, colourful prints showing exciting moments in kabuki, a traditional form of dance-drama. This is the second show in a two-part exhibition of his works in Gallery 29.
Hiromitsu’s striking designs are not portraits of actual actors, but visualisations of famous kabuki roles.
In kabuki, performers wearing elaborate costumes and make-up use stylised movement and song to enact melodramatic stories about love, loyalty and the clash between duty and emotion.

Peter Boxall 'The Possibility of Literature' with Abigail Williams | Blackwell's Bookshop
Nov 27, 2024 (UTC+0)
Oxford
The Possibility of Literature Bringing together key compositions from the last twenty-five years, as well as several new pieces, the book demonstrates the changing fate of literary thinking over the first decades of the twenty-first century. Peter Boxall traces here the profound shifts in the global conditions that make literature possible as these have occurred in the historical passage from 9/11 to Covid 19. Exploring questions such as 'The Idea of Beauty', the nature of 'Mere Being', or the possibilities of Rereading, the author anatomises the myriad forces that shape the literary imagination. At the same time, he gives vivid critical expression to the imaginative possibilities of literature itself - those unique forms of communal life that literature makes possible in a dramatically changing world, and that lead us towards a new shared future. Peter Boxall Peter Boxall is Goldsmiths’ Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford. He has written a number of books on the novel, including Twenty-First-Century Fiction and The Value of the Novel. He is editor of Textual Practice, and series editor of ‘Cambridge Studies in Twenty-First-Century Literature and Culture’. His book, The Prosthetic Imagination, came out with CUP in 2020. Abigail Williams Professor Abigail Williams is the Associate Head of Research and Innovation for the Humanities Division. Working with the divisional research support and impact teams and TORCH she leads on strategic oversight of research activity across the nine faculties and departments. She is Professor of English Literature and Lord White Tutorial Fellow at St Peter’s College. Her research focuses on eighteenth-century literature, politics, and the history of the book, with a recent focus on historical and contemporary readers and reading practices.

Emilia | The Dancehouse, Oxford Road, Manchester, UK
Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Emilia by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm “I will never be at peace as long as I have no voice. I will not stop. I will not rest until I find words for all my daughters I will never know.” This fiery, feisty and funny play was written for Shakespeare’s Globe at the height of the #Me Too movement. It is an irreverent take on the life of the real-life Emilia Bassano, probably the first woman to have poetry published under her own name, and probably Shakespeare’s mysterious lady of the sonnets. The play hijacks the stage revisioning, rewriting and reimagining HERstory. “A rousing cheer for women’s emancipation” Aleks Sierz, The Arts Desk

Smith and Sniff live at the MINI factory | MINI Plant Oxford
Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Smith and Sniff live at the MINI factory Smith and Sniff are recording another episode of Britain’s most popular car podcast in front of a live audience, and this one's happening at the MINI factory in Cowley, Oxford. This recording will take place in the events centre next to the factory where you'll be able to look around an excellent collection of classic Minis before sitting down to watch Jonny trying to get Richard to stop banging on about Austin Maxis and Rover 800s and all the other cars made on this famous factory site. As usual with a Smith and Sniff live show, there'll be a recording of a normal podcast for about an hour, a half hour break during which time you'll be able to buy refreshments, and then another hour or so of audience questions. Jonny and Richard will be milling around during the break and afterwards for as long as possible before the nice MINI people ask us to leave so if you've always wanted to show them a photo of your old Opel Monza being run over by a traction engine, this might be the time. As you'd expect from a car factory, there's plenty of parking. Turn up from 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm.

Arabella Byrne and Julia Hamilton 'In the Blood' with Zoe Strimpel | Blackwell's Bookshop
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
In the Blood In the Blood is a memoir in two voices, those of a mother and daughter both in the grip of the disease that has ravaged generations of women in their family. Julia, aged sixty-five, and Arabella, thirty-eight, ended up in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous just nine months apart. In some ways it's a predictable story; two addicts drank and destroyed and ransacked until they could drink no more. In others, it is entirely unlike any account of motherhood or addiction that has ever been told. This is not a recovery memoir, but rather an unflinching family drama spanning generations, whilst looking pain and shame directly in the eye. Confronting the difficulty of writing faithfully about those we love and the ways in which memory blurs the boundaries of fact, this is the story of women who grew up in shadows, and have navigated their way out of darkness. Brutally honest, darkly funny and bursting with hope, In The Blood is the sound of the howling cry of illness and betrayal across generations, and what you do with that sound when you hear it.
