Women of the Dark Skies | Chettle

A storytelling pilgrimage for women, exploring the darkness, our power and our freedom. Join us to cross the ancient lands of Cranborne Chase at night. You will travel back in time nearly 2,000 years. From across the vast chalk landscape, you will gather with fellow Durotriges tribes women in the Valley of the Winter Lake to honour Arla the Hare Runner, on the eve of her coming-of-age ceremony. You will meet the local Story Weaver, who will lead you on a pilgrimage across the dark landscape to hear the story of Arla’s journey from child to woman. However, the Story Weaver brings word that an uprising against the Romans is being seeded by a formidable female Iceni warrior. As Rome threatens to extinguish your freedom and culture, will you heed the call to keep the powerful lore of your lands alive? Women of the Dark Skies is a theatrical, storytelling pilgrimage for women, walking at night over the ancient landscape that surrounds the village of Chettle in North Dorset. This magical event will take you back in time to late Iron Age Dorset and offers a unique opportunity to experience the wonder of the Cranborne Chase’s famous dark skies. This is a transformative experience combining storytelling, night walking, ritual, history, nature connection, stargazing, feminism and spirituality. The route will be approximately 4 miles, with stops along the way for story telling. During the pilgrimage, we are inviting participants to walk in silence, without the use of torches, to allow a fully immersive experience of this historic landscape at night. The evening will finish in a secluded woodland glade, where we will hold a Women's Circle around a fire, with hot drinks and biscuits. This pilgrimage is led by its creator Becky Burchell and was developed with support from with local ecology, dark skies and archaeology experts and members of the Chettle community. This event was originally developed with funding from CHANGE Festival, Cranborne Chase and Chalke Valley Landscape Partnership and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. What others are saying.... Very unique and powerful, tapping into something the world needs right now: female unity and leadership - Helen The experience of walking in the dark, with the safety of women, with a guide, allowing us to hear the owls and the night sounds, was truly special. I felt myself slowing down, calming, connecting and feeling things more deeply. It was deeply restorative. I loved the story, and imagining us back in celtic time. Becky was an incredible guide and storyteller. She was thoughtful, warm and inspiring. - Lucy Absolutely brilliant evening. A wonderful insight into an ancient way of life I never learnt about - Olivia A wonderful evening with amazing storytelling, I felt transported to another time and felt less scared of the darkness - Jeanette The ritual elements of the evening and the women circle were particularly moving - Victoria A beautiful experience that will stay on in my memory for a long time - Anon Information Source: Becky Burchell | eventbrite

Madeleine Roger | Live at Dan's Hall Come join us for an unforgettable night with singer-songwriter Madeleine Roger at Dan's Hall! Doors at 7:00 Show at 7:30 Suggested $25 Address will be provided after RVSPing. Parking is limited - carpool & biking encouraged! www.MadeleineRoger.com Madeleine Roger (she/her) is a singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Canada. While skillfully accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, it is her artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room, uniting her lyrical prowess with a breathtaking voice that lingers long after the last note. Her newest collection of songs is a deeply personal body of work examining every nook and cranny of love and loss. It is unflinchingly honest - Madeleine has poured over every word, and the mastery of her craft shows. Nerve, the album created in the process (out August 2024 on Birthday Cake Records) was produced by Josh Kaufman (Anaïs Mitchell, Bob Weir, Bonny Light Horseman) and recorded in four days in Kingston NY by engineer D. James Goodwin (The National, Fruit Bats, The Hold Steady). Nerve is an uplifting gut-punch; an uninhibited account of risk, longing, regret, grief, and love. It touches the exposed nerve left over from a breakup with a long-term lover and musical collaborator, the death of a soul-friend, the secret of an unrequited love, months of caring for a dying grandparent, and finding a curious peace in spite of it. Madeleine bravely exposes the delicate and private moments in life that are universal and sets them adrift on melodies and arrangements that make us feel like nothing is insurmountable. She has toured extensively across Canada, Europe, and the UK performing live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Shetland Island Folk Festival, Vancouver Island Music Festival, Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Summerfolk Festival of Arts and Crafts, among many others. She is also a regular collaborator with JUNO award winning string quartet The Fretless, appearing with them in performances and on recordings as a vocalist and co-writer. English Songwriter of the Year nominee (2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards) Producer of the Year nominee (2019 Western Canadian Music Awards) “Many years ago I shared a band house with touring artists. For a week, I shared a kitchen table and living room with Joni Mitchell, who sang songs and wrote words on paper. I got goose bumps listening to those words and songs. A lifetime later and I’m getting the same goosebumps from a new album Nerve from Winnipeg’s Madeleine Roger. These songs and this singer deserves to be heard - by everyone.”- Terry David Mulligan, CKUA “These are devastating songs - beautiful music from Winnipeg’s Madeleine Roger” - Tom Power, Q on CBC Information Source: eventbrite

Immerse yourself in the captivating rhythms and ancient devotional chants that will transport you to a state of pure bliss. Such pure joy & love coming through the music. Unlike any other Kirtan we've been to! I'm no musician but found so much joy by just letting go into the songs and mantras! I experienced such an energy surge through my body and felt a deeper connection to everything. ** To be notified about future Oneder Kirtan events join the mailing list here: https://bit.ly/3XkOqBX This music provides a chance for us to transcend our human boundaries. It speaks to the core of us, reminding us that there truly is no separation and deep within we are all one. We sing world heart mantras from the sacred traditions of India, Polynesia, Western & Native America. The word mantra derives from Sanskrit, which is divided into “man” meaning mind and “tra” meaning to free from. Mantras are quite literally tools to free the mind. Kirtan digs into the heart’s deepest well to touch and be touched by the Divine Unifying Presence. Singing these powerful healing mantras together, we have the opportunity to merge with the sound and true essence of oneness & love that these rhythmic ancient songs open within us. 🌞 7:30 -9 pm. *Doors open at 7:30pm* 🌞 $20 Minimum Donation $25 At Door 🌞 Over 18 Event - We are asking that children please stay home or have babysitters so that mum and dad can get the most out of the evening. Let's get together in honour of the light within us all! This event is followed by an evening of Kirtan World Heart Music and warm tea! Book your tickets to Kirtan here.
