Do you have a bike that needs a fix or just some care and attention? We'll guide you through the skills you'll need to get your bike out on the road, running smoothly and in tip-top condition. We want to make cycling more accessible and affordable for all Portsmouth residents. Working with the team of experienced mechanics from Southsea Cycles, we aim to teach you the basics of cycle maintenance so that you can make simple repairs at home. These informal, hands-on workshops are suitable for adults of all ages and abilities. During the workshops you'll learn a range of techniques, from fixing a puncture to aligning your wheels. At each session you'll discover what equipment you'll need to make repairs and how to use tools you may already have at home. The flexible workshops will last for two hours and can be booked as a course of five sessions or mixed and matched as stand-alone units to fit with your schedule. Sessions are held on Wednesday mornings at St Michael's Church, Paulsgrove. Please note that you will need to bring your own bike to the session with you. 23 October - City cycling 101: Ride safe and keep your bike secure. Learn how to make emergency roadside repairs, fix a puncture, repair a broken chain and replace brake pads. 30 October - Cycle maintenance basics: Discover how to safely M-check (bike maintenance check) your bike, as well as maintaining your gears and brakes. 6 November - Fix up, ride sharp:This workshop will take you into a more detailed M-check, plus you'll learn about gear tuning and drivetrain repair. 13 November - Stopping power: Learn how to tune and repair cycle brakes and diagnose brake problems. 20 November - Straighten Up! These workshops are for musicians that already know how to play thier intruments, but want to learn to jam with others! They are run by Nathan and Ryan Hill, collective known as the Hill Brothers. Each Jam session is one hour along and the following instruments will be provided. Drums, Bass Guitar, 2 x Guitars, Keyboards and a mircphone for a vocalist. When selecting tickets please choose which instrument you will be playing, this will allow us to make sure we have the right amount of instrument for a jam session. Join us for an afternoon of phototalks at Aspex Portsmouth with photographers Kirsty Mackay and Kelly O’Brien. Both talks will have a Q&A section to ask the artists questions about their practice.Drinks and refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the night. This event is curated by Pompey Darkoom as part of Photo Fringe 2024 and supported by Aspex Portsmouth and Photoworks UK. About the speakers Kirsty Mackay was born Glasgow and grew up in a working-class tenement block in the city. Her experience underpins her approach to photography, both in terms of the topics she chooses and her approaches to them. Shooting portraits and documentary images, Mackay tackles poverty without demonising or patronising the people who face it. She was raised on state benefits in a council house by her single mother and collaborator, within a vibrant Irish immigrant and poor working-class community. Collection of collections is a creative workshop led by artist Maria de la O Garrido, designed for photographers with an interest and curiosity for contemporary art, creativity and image. After visiting CLASSifications and reflecting on the work exhibited, María will invite participants to observe their surroundings carefully, and to use the collection of materials provided inspired by each of the artist on display (including images, words, or objects) to make a physical piece of work where they can apply their reflections on the topic they choose. The purpose of the workshop is to explore the possibilities of the materials provided and to apply our critical thinking and personal experience in the process. The intention is to spark creativity through demonstrating a variety of techniques such as expanded collage (installation based artwork) and our personal experience as an important tool. The workshop will last 2 hours, feel free to bring your own lunch or order from our independent cafe, Port Coffee This event has kindly been supported by Photo Fringe, as part of this year’s festival ‘Common Ground’.
