Ashleigh Nugent is a writer, performer and director at RiseUp, based in Liverpool. We will be discussing his debut novel, Locks.About Locks ‘1993 was the year that Stephen Lawrence got murdered by racists, and I became an angry Black lad with a “chip on his shoulder”’ Aeon, a mixed-up and mixed-race teenager from a leafy Liverpool suburb, is desperate to understand the Black identity thrust upon him. He grows dreadlocks and immerses himself in ‘gangsta’ rap. But Aeon’s journey of self-discovery is hampered by the fact that the only Black people in his life are his dad and his cousin, Increase. Aeon’s ambition to find his place in the world takes him to Jamaica. Here, Aeon soon finds that smoking loads of weed, growing messy locks and wearing massive red boots don’t necessarily help him to fit in. Within days of his arrival he is mugged, arrested and banged up in a Jamaican detention centre. Seen as the ‘White boy’, he finds that his journey of self-discovery has only just begun – and he’s going to have to fight for the respect and recognition he deserves . . . Jane Claire Bradley is an award-winning queer, working-class writer, performer and educator living in Manchester. We will be discussing her debut novel, Dear Neighbour.Dear NeighbourFive strangers. A 2-hour course building on the skills and mindset learned in previous classes. LOW LIGHT will teach the student to confidently operate a handgun in a violent situation IN THE DARK. A truly unique opportunity to train with your handgun in a scenario that few other ranges and schools offer! This session is held entirely on the range, starting with a lecture on hand-held flashlight techniques, followed by a memorable range session shooting steel targets. We will also train with pistol-mounted lights. The probability of self-defense in a low-light situation is higher than in broad daylight. After successfully completing this course, students will be prepared and confident to defend themselves and their families in such an environment! 100 rounds are required. 1-hour lecture & Dry fire1 hour live fire. Hat, neck scarf, bug spray, rain gear and bags to carry your gear. Clothing for seasonal weather during outdoor classes is required in order to stay comfortable. Firearms Training Tuition Deposit Policy We typically fill our classes and turn students away as the class date nears. Be sure you can attend the class date for which you sign up. Should you become unable to attend a class, you can use your deposit for another class offered within one year of the original class date provided you give at least 72-hour notice to us. We will subtract any upfront costs we incur such as class materials from the deposit. Cancellations shorter than 72 hours and no-shows forfeit their deposit. NO REFUNDS Thank you. Home-built Gun Policy We do not allow the use of 80% home-built firearms in our classes such as “Polymer 80” pistols and “80” lower” rifles or pistols. A general rule of thumb: if it does not have a serial number, do not bring it. These guns have proven to be unreliable in class.
