About the Author: Jim Wexell is in his 30th season covering the Pittsburgh Steelers and has spent over 40 years covering Pittsburgh sports since graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983. Born in Chicago, the former Bears fan has now written six books about the Steelers during and after covering the team through four Super Bowl appearances. A relentless researcher, Jim has put all he’s accumulated from his 30 years of covering the team into this book. About the book: Heading into the 2024 season, no team has won more Super Bowls than the Pittsburgh Steelers and no team has won more games since the merger. The Steelers won their 500th post-merger game late in the 2022 season. Prior to the modern era, the Steelers struggled but they persevered through the wiles of founder Art Rooney. As a young athlete growing up on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Rooney not only learned the sporting game, he learned politics, which helped him nurture the struggling young Steelers through their barnstorming days of the 1920s, their initial foray into the NFL in the 1930s, their topsy-turvy survival skills of the 1940s, and then into the rugged 1950s as they learned how to win. That winning came in the form of Buddy Parker and Bobby Layne in the late part of that decade and into the 1960s, but it was Art’s oldest son, Dan Rooney, who showed the city the importance of not only the draft but stability in the coaching ranks. Those are the ingredients Chuck Noll used to put together four Super Bowl champions during the 1970s. After Noll came the long-tenured coaching careers of Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin, who also won Lombardi Trophies. THE RIDE Our bicycle rides are a great way to explore Western Pennsylvania and beyond. The rides are hosted by Leo McCarthy, Army veteran and retired Moon Township police chief. Leo works hard to plan our rides, peppering them with an ounce of fun and a dash of history. The rides are social in nature and limited to a small group of 15 riders. We take our time and enjoy the camaraderie. Most rides are between 15 and 20 miles. Join us for the last ride of our 2024 season. Ride 16 miles on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Experience views along all three rivers and take in all of Pittsburgh’s great riverside attractions. View stadiums, museums, parks, bridges, marinas, boats, inclines and learn tons of history. Enjoy an introduction to the trail system connections that could take you all the way to Washington D.C. Finally, tour Bicycle Heaven the world’s largest transportation museum dedicated to bicycles. Her writing has been widely anthologized, appearing in numerous journals including the Academy of American Poets Poem a Day. Her poems and essays are forthcoming in several international anthologies. She’s spoken internationally on the relationship between art/culture and social change. Engel currently serves as Associate Arts Professor in NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts’ Department of Art and Public Policy, and Master’s Program in Arts Politics. Her latest poetry collection, Dear Inheritors was released by Get Fresh Books (June 2024). The Lost Brother Alphabet, also with Get Fresh Books, was published in 2020.
