Uncertain Futures is a project with American artist Suzanne Lacy, Communities Learning Manager Ruth Edson, two University academics and an Advisory Group of Manchester women over 50. It seeks to address the inequalities facing Manchester women over 50 relating to work and worklessness. We want to understand how interconnected issues of gender, age, labour, class, migration status, disability and race impact women’s paid and unpaid work. For the first iteration which opened in June 2021, the gallery space hosted live interviews with 100 women over 50 from all walks of life, alongside workshops, talks, and media presentations that explored equity and survival. The 100 women came together in March 2022 for a celebratory dinner. In this second iteration we reveal the development of Uncertain Futures and the initial research findings. Alongside a new film of the 100 women dinner, there are artworks and a timeline outlining the development of the project. Uncertain Futures combines art, research and activism and aims to create real social change and affect social policy.

Come along to my workshop in Thorniley Studios for the perfect beginners course in traditional silversmithing and jewellery making techniques. We will explore some basic techniques including sawing, soldering and shaping/forming to create a simple sterling silver ring. The silver we will be using is 100% recycled and all materials are provided. By the end of the afternoon you will have your very own silver ring to take home, handmade by you. The workshop lasts about 4 hours and the design of the ring is a simple silver band with either a mirror polish or hammered textured finish (see photos below). If you are interested in making something more bespoke I offer private workshops. More information can be found here. To commemorate his remarkable life, our exhibition Sir Christopher Wren: The Quest for Knowledge will explore and reflect on the early life and career of Wren. The exhibition will chart his lesser-known achievements in mathematics, astronomy and physiology, as well as the design and building of his greatest monument, St Paul’s Cathedral. With a wealth of material from our archives, discover these rich stories alongside drawings, photographs and treasures from our collection including remarkable historical objects personal to Wren himself.
